Which cable a Fiat 500 needs depends on which 500 you have and where it was built. The 500e sold in Britain from 2021 uses a seven pin Type 2 socket with an 11kW onboard charger whichever battery it carries, so it takes a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The 500e sold in North America is a different specification: it is quoted at 6.6kW and uses a five pin Type 1 inlet, so an imported car needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead instead.
The older 500 is a separate question again. The 1.2 and TwinAir petrol 500 built from 2007 to 2024 has no charging socket at all, and neither does the 500 Hybrid, sometimes badged Mild Hybrid, which is a petrol car with a 48V system. Fiat sells two cars called 500 side by side and only the electric one charges.

Which Fiat 500 models have no charging socket?
The 1.2 and TwinAir petrol 500 built from 2007 to 2024 has no charging port anywhere on the body. Neither does the 500 Hybrid, sometimes badged Mild Hybrid, which is a petrol car with a 48V system that recharges itself from the engine and braking. Only the 500e, on its newer and larger body, can be plugged in at all.
My 500e is rated at 11kW. Will a 22kW cable charge it faster?
Not at home. Eleven kilowatts is a three phase figure and a British house is fed by a single phase supply, so 7.4kW is the ceiling on any driveway and a 32A single phase cable already passes all of it. A three phase lead only shows a difference at a genuine three phase post. For nearly every owner the 32A single phase cable is the whole answer.
Is the 16A cable enough for a Fiat 500e?
It will charge the car, but at 3.7kW rather than 7.4kW, so it roughly doubles the hours the 500e spends plugged in. It is worth having only where a 16A post is what you have access to. For home charging the 32A single phase lead is the one to order, and the 3 Pin lead at 2.3kW is a backup for nights away from a wallbox rather than a daily routine.
Do I need my own cable at a public charge point?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, which means there is no lead fixed to the unit and the driver supplies one. Rapid DC chargers are different, because they are tethered and make the connection with their own lead. Keeping the Type 2 to Type 2 cable in the boot covers both the driveway and the car park.
How is a Fiat 500e charging cable built and sealed?
Every lead is made to IEC 62196 and holds CE certification. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable is sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, and the 3 Pin lead is sealed to IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C. Our guide to IP ratings explains what each digit protects against. All cables carry a two year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.
