Which cable a Vauxhall needs comes down to one car. The Ampera, the range extender sold here from 2012, carries a five pin Type 1 inlet and needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Every other plug-in Vauxhall has sold in Britain uses the seven pin Type 2 socket and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 lead: the Corsa-e and Corsa Electric, the Mokka-e, the Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric, the Vivaro-e and Vivaro Electric, and the Grandland X plug-in hybrids.
A Type 2 lead will not physically enter an Ampera inlet, so check the plug before assuming a cable inherited from a newer car or a previous owner will fit. Five pins in a round housing means Type 1. Seven pins with a flat top edge means Type 2.

A 32A single phase cable delivers that in full, so it is the default order across the Type 2 range. The Vivaro-e has a 7.4kW charger as standard and matches the supply exactly. The Corsa-e was sold with an optional 11kW three phase charger for around eight hundred and fifty pounds, and the Astra Electric is rated at 11kW as standard, but eleven kilowatts is a three phase number and neither car exceeds 7.4kW on a driveway. The Ampera sits at the other end: its onboard charger tops out at around 3.3kW, so a 16A Type 1 lead already covers everything it can take, and Type 1 is single phase by design with 7.4kW as its hard ceiling.
The plug-in Grandland X, sold as Hybrid4 300 with four wheel drive or Hybrid 225 with front wheel drive, carries a 13.2 kWh battery and left the factory with either a 3.7kW charger as standard or a 7.4kW one as an option. A 16A cable covers the standard charger fully. A 32A cable covers both, so if the paperwork does not say which your car has, 32A is the safe purchase.
Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, so the driver brings the lead. A 5m cable covers a home wallbox on the same side as the charging flap and most public bays. A 10m cable suits shared parking and awkward driveways. Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 1 to Type 2 leads are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, the 3 Pin lead is IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C, and every cable is built to IEC 62196 with CE certification.

Which amperage should I buy for a Vauxhall Ampera?
The 16A Type 1 lead. The Ampera onboard charger tops out at around 3.3kW, so a 16A cable already supplies everything the car is able to draw and a 32A one cannot make it pull more. Type 1 is a single phase connector by design, which means 7.4kW is its physical ceiling and a three phase Type 1 cable has never existed. Buy on the charger, not on the amperage badge.
I paid for the 11kW charger on my Corsa-e. Do I need a 22kW cable?
No. At a British house a Corsa-e charges at 7.4kW whether that option was ticked or not, because the optional charger needs three phases to show its value and a home has one. A 32A single phase cable passes the full 7.4kW. The 22kW three phase lead only makes a difference at a genuine three phase post, which is a commercial supply.
Which cable does a Grandland X Hybrid take?
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the amperage depends on the charger fitted at the factory. The 3.7kW charger was standard and 7.4kW was optional on the Hybrid4 300 and Hybrid 225, both of which carry a 13.2 kWh battery. Do I need to take a cable to a public charger?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, which means no lead is attached to the unit and the driver supplies one. Your Type 2 to Type 2 cable is therefore the lead you keep in the boot as well as the one you use at home. Rapid DC chargers are tethered and connect with their own fixed lead instead.
