Product Description

Check the badge before you buy anything. Fiat sells two cars called 500 side by side and only one of them charges. The 500e is the electric one, on a newer body. The 500 Hybrid, sometimes badged Mild Hybrid, is a petrol car with a 48V system and no charging port at all. The 1.2 and TwinAir petrol 500 built from 2007 to 2024 has none either. This is the mistake we see most often.

The 500e sold here from 2021 uses a Type 2 socket and an 11 kW onboard charger whichever battery it has, so there is nothing to look up. Eleven kilowatts is a three phase rating. On a single phase British supply the car settles at 7.4 kW, which is exactly what a 32A cable delivers.

Battery size decides the wait, not the cable. The 24 kWh car holds 21.3 kWh usable and reaches full in about 3 hours 15 minutes at 7.4 kW. The 42 kWh car holds 37.3 kWh usable and needs about 5 hours 45 minutes. Action and similar trims use the smaller pack, while Icon and La Prima carry the larger one.

There is a second, older car with the same name. The 500e sold in North America is quoted at 6.6 kW and uses Type 1 rather than Type 2. If yours is that car, the Type 1 cables listed on this page are the right fit. Type 1 is a five pin single phase connector, so no three phase version of it exists and 7.4 kW is its physical ceiling too.

Both European batteries also support CCS rapid charging, at 50 kW on the 24 kWh car and 85 kW on the 42 kWh, which uses the charge point's own lead. The Abarth 500e and the larger Fiat 600e share the 500e's Type 2 socket and 11 kW charger.

A 3 pin lead is genuinely useful on the smaller battery, needing about 10 hours 30 minutes from empty, which one night covers. The 42 kWh car takes over 18 hours on the same lead and is far better served by a wallbox.

On length, 5m suits a small car parked alongside its charger. Take 10m for street parking, shared bays, or anywhere the car does not always stop in the same place.

Does the Fiat 500 Hybrid need a charging cable?

No. The 500 Hybrid, also badged Mild Hybrid, is a petrol car with a 48V system charged by its own engine, and it has no charging port. Neither does the 1.2 or TwinAir petrol 500 sold from 2007. Only a car badged 500e or Electric plugs in, so read the boot badge first.

Which socket does the Fiat 500e use?

The 500e sold here from 2021 uses Type 2, with an 11 kW onboard charger. A British home is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW there and fills the 21.3 kWh usable version in about 3 hours 15 minutes. The older North American 500e uses Type 1 instead.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
