Which cable a Renault needs depends on how old it is, and the Kangoo is the model that splits the range. The Kangoo Z.E. of 2011 to 2017 uses a five pin Type 1 socket and needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Every other electric Renault sold here uses a seven pin Type 2 inlet and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 lead: the Kangoo Z.E. 33 of 2017 to 2021 and the Kangoo E-Tech from 2022, the Zoe from its 2013 launch to the final Z.E.50 of 2024, the Megane E-Tech, the Scenic E-Tech and the Renault 5 E-Tech.
Renault settled on Type 2 across its electric line-up years ago, so for most owners the plug shape is decided before they start. Check the year on the V5 if you have an early Kangoo, because none of the Type 2 leads will enter that van and no adaptor bridges the two shapes.

Does my Renault need a Type 1 or a Type 2 cable?
The year decides it, and only on the Kangoo. The Kangoo Z.E. of 2011 to 2017 uses a five pin Type 1 socket and needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Everything else takes a Type 2 to Type 2 lead: the Kangoo Z.E. 33 of 2017 to 2021, the Kangoo E-Tech from 2022, every Zoe from 2013 to 2024, the Megane E-Tech, the Scenic E-Tech and the Renault 5 E-Tech.
Is a 22kW three phase cable worth it for a Zoe?
For public charging, often yes. The Zoe is one of the few cars where the 22kW lead is not wasted money, because its Chameleon onboard charger accepts the full 22kW AC on every UK car, from the launch model to the final Z.E.50. At home it makes no difference, since a British supply is single phase and the car draws 7.4kW on a driveway either way, which the 32A single phase cable delivers in full.
Which Kangoo do I have?
Three electric Kangoos have been sold here. The 2011 to 2017 Kangoo Z.E. is the Type 1 one. The Kangoo Z.E. 33 of 2017 to 2021 uses Type 2 with a 7.4kW onboard charger and a 31 kWh usable battery, so a 32A Type 2 cable fills it in around 4 hours 45 minutes. The Kangoo E-Tech from 2022 is also Type 2, with a 22kW three phase charger and 45 kWh usable, taking about 6 hours 45 minutes on a single phase supply.
My Megane E-Tech is listed at 22kW. Do I need a three phase cable at home?
No. Early cars in Optimum Charge specification carry a 22kW three phase charger, cars from around 2025 are 11kW, and there was also a standard EV60 at 7.4kW, but a UK house is single phase so 7.4kW is the ceiling for all of them. The 32A single phase cable delivers that in full. Check the version name or your own paperwork rather than a brochure, because Renault's published figures do not always agree.
What cable does a Renault 5 E-Tech take?
A Type 2 to Type 2 lead, in 32A single phase. The 5 accepts 11kW on AC whether it has the 40 kWh Urban Range or the 52 kWh Comfort Range battery, and 11kW is a three phase figure, so a home wallbox gives it no more than 7.4kW. The 32A single phase cable passes all of that straight through, and the battery decides how long you wait rather than how hard the car pulls.
Do I need to bring my own cable to a public charger?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, which means no lead is fixed to the unit and the driver supplies one. Renault UK listed a Type 2 cable as standard on the Z.E.50, but used cars regularly change hands with no lead at all, so it is worth checking the boot before you rely on one. Rapid DC chargers are tethered and use their own fixed lead.
How are the cables sealed and certified?
Every lead is made to IEC 62196 and CE certified. Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 1 to Type 2 cables are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, while the 3 Pin lead is sealed to IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C.
