Toyota EV Charging Cables
Which cable a Toyota needs depends on the year, and the Prius Plug-in is the car that splits the range. The first generation Plug-in, sold from 2012 to 2016, uses a five pin Type 1 inlet and needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. The second generation Plug-in of 2017 to 2022 and the fifth generation from 2024 both moved to Type 2, and so did everything else Toyota plugs in: the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, the C-HR Plug-in Hybrid and C-HR+, and the bZ4X, all of which take a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The two connectors are not interchangeable and a Type 2 cable will not physically fit a 2015 Prius Plug-in, so check the V5 rather than guessing. Five pins in a round housing is Type 1. Seven pins with one flat edge is Type 2.

British homes are wired single phase and 7.4kW is the ceiling, whatever the onboard charger is rated at, so a 32A single phase cable is the right order on every Type 2 Toyota. The RAV4 Plug-in of 2021 to 2025 and the C-HR Plug-in Hybrid both accept 6.6kW, which sits just below what a house can give. The 2026 RAV4, the C-HR+ on Icon and Design grades and the bZ4X built from Q4 2022 production accept 11kW, which is a three phase rating that still resolves to 7.4kW on a driveway. The very first bZ4X launched with a 6.6kW charger. The 2026 bZ4X Excel and the C-HR+ Excel carry 22kW chargers and are among the rare cars that use a three phase lead to the last amp at a 22kW post.
Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, so the driver brings the lead. Flap positions differ across the range, with the bZ4X on the front left wing, the C-HR+ on the front left wing kerb side and the RAV4 Plug-in on the rear right wing, so think about how you park before choosing 5m or 10m. Type 2 to Type 2 leads are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, the 3 Pin lead is IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C, and every cable is built to IEC 62196 with CE certification.

Does my Toyota need a Type 1 or a Type 2 cable?
The year decides it on the Prius and nothing else. The first generation Prius Plug-in, sold from 2012 to 2016, uses a five pin Type 1 inlet and needs a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. The second generation Plug-in of 2017 to 2022, the fifth generation from 2024, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, the C-HR Plug-in Hybrid, the C-HR+ and the bZ4X all use a seven pin Type 2 inlet and take a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
Which Toyotas cannot be charged from the mains at all?
A plain Prius hybrid of any generation up to 2022 has no charging socket, and neither does the Prius+ seven seater built from 2012 to 2020. Will a 22kW three phase cable charge my bZ4X faster at home?
No. A British house is fed by a single phase supply, so 7.4kW is the ceiling on any driveway and a 32A single phase cable already delivers it in full. Twenty two kilowatts is a three phase rating. The 2026 bZ4X Excel is one grade Toyota fits with a 22kW onboard charger, and it does use every amp of a three phase lead, but only at a 22kW three phase post.
Which cable suits a RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid?
The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead on every one of them. The 2021 to 2025 car accepts 6.6kW on AC, which a 32A cable covers comfortably, and the 2026 car accepts 11kW, which resolves to 7.4kW at home and is again exactly what the 32A cable carries. The charging flap sits behind a cover on the rear right wing, which is worth knowing when you choose between 5m and 10m.
Can I use a 32A cable on an early bZ4X?
Yes. The bZ4X launched with a 6.6kW onboard charger, and from Q4 2022 production an 11kW three phase unit replaced it. A 32A cable fits and works on both, and the car simply draws what its own charger allows. That early car is one of the few electric vehicles sold here that cannot take everything a home wallbox offers, but no cable can change that limit.
Do I need my own cable at a public charge point?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, meaning no lead is attached to the unit and the driver supplies one. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable therefore travels with the car as well as living on the driveway. Rapid DC chargers are tethered and make the connection with their own fixed lead, so nothing needs to come out of the boot.
How are the cables sealed and certified?
Every lead is built to IEC 62196 and holds CE certification. Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 1 to Type 2 cables are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, and the 3 Pin lead is sealed to IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C, with a Type B RCD inside the plug.
