Citroen EV Charging Cables
Which cable a Citroen needs depends on how old the car is. The 2011 to 2020 C-Zero and the 2013 to 2019 Berlingo Electric carry a five pin Type 1 inlet, so those two need a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Everything Citroen has electrified since uses Type 2: the e-C4 and e-C4 X, the e-C3, the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrids and the electric e-C5 Aircross, the e-Dispatch and the e-SpaceTourer, all of which take a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
If you are not sure which you have, open the charging flap and count the pins. Five pins in a round housing with a latch on top is Type 1. Seven pins with one flat edge is Type 2. The two shapes are not adaptors of one another and neither will push into the other, which is where most wasted deliveries on cars of this age come from.
Read MoreA British home is fed by a single phase supply, and 7.4kW is its ceiling. That is the figure a 32A single phase cable carries in full, and it is the fastest any Citroen will charge on a driveway. The e-C4, the e-C3, the e-Dispatch and the e-SpaceTourer all leave the factory with a 7.4kW onboard charger, so cable, car and supply agree on the same number. Citroen offered an 11kW three phase charger as an option on several models. Eleven kilowatts is a three phase rating and it is only reached at a three phase supply, so it changes nothing on a house. The older Type 1 cars are slower still: both the C-Zero and the Berlingo Electric have small chargers quoted between roughly 3.3kW and 3.7kW, which a 16A lead already covers.
Three cars wear a C3 badge in Britain and only the electric e-C3 has a socket. The petrol C3 has nothing to plug in, and neither does the C3 Hybrid 110, which is a 48 volt mild hybrid that fills its own battery from the engine and the brakes. The C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 of 2023 to 2025 and the Hybrid 145 from 2025 work the same way and take no cable either. The word hybrid on the boot lid is not a promise of a charging port.
Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, which means no lead is attached to the unit and the driver brings one. A 5m cable reaches the majority of bays and a home wallbox on the same side as the flap. A 10m cable covers awkward parking, shared bays and a wallbox on the far side of a driveway. Type 2 to Type 2 leads are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, the Type 2 to 3 Pin lead is IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C, and every cable is built to IEC 62196 with CE certification.

Does my Citroen need a Type 1 or a Type 2 cable?
The age of the car decides it. The C-Zero of 2011 to 2020 and the Berlingo Electric of 2013 to 2019 use a five pin Type 1 inlet and need a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Every later Citroen that plugs in uses a seven pin Type 2 inlet, including the e-C4 and e-C4 X, the e-C3, the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrids, the e-C5 Aircross, the e-Dispatch and the e-SpaceTourer.
Which Citroens have no charging socket at all?
The petrol C3 and the C3 Hybrid 110 have nothing to plug in, because the Hybrid 110 is a 48 volt mild hybrid that recharges itself from the engine and from braking. The C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 of 2023 to 2025 and the Hybrid 145 from 2025 are the same arrangement. No cable of any kind fits these cars, and the word hybrid on the badge is what catches buyers out.
Will a 22kW three phase cable charge my Citroen faster at home?
No. A house in Britain is wired single phase, so 7.4kW is the most any wallbox can deliver and a 32A single phase cable already passes all of it. Citroen sold an 11kW three phase charger as an option on the e-C4 and the vans, and Citroen's own price guide notes that an 11kW car can charge more slowly than a 7.4kW one on a single phase supply. A three phase lead only pays at a three phase post.
Which amperage suits an older Type 1 Citroen?
The C-Zero and the Berlingo Electric have small onboard chargers, published between roughly 3.3kW and 3.7kW, so a 16A Type 1 lead already covers everything either car can accept. The 32A Type 1 cable fits the same socket and is the heavier lead, but it cannot make the car pull more than its own charger allows. Type 1 is single phase by design, 7.4kW is its hard ceiling, and no three phase Type 1 cable exists.
Do I need to bring my own cable to a public charger?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, which means there is no lead fixed to the unit and the driver supplies one. That makes the Type 2 to Type 2 cable the lead you keep in the boot as well as the one you use at home. Rapid DC chargers are the exception, because they are tethered and make the connection with their own fixed lead.
How are the cables sealed and rated?
Every lead is built to IEC 62196 and holds CE certification. Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 1 to Type 2 cables are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, while the 3 Pin lead is sealed to IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C. Our guide to IP ratings explains what the two digits actually cover.
Do the Citroen vans take the same cable as the cars?
The e-Dispatch and the e-SpaceTourer both use a Type 2 inlet with a 7.4kW onboard charger as standard, so the same 32A single phase lead suits them as suits an e-C4. The 2013 to 2019 Berlingo Electric is the exception, with a Type 1 inlet and a charger of around 3.3kW. Every cable carries a two year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.
