Product Description

The Skoda Kodiaq iV charging cable question has a counter-intuitive answer, because this plug-in hybrid takes 11 kW AC, three phase. That is a proper electric-car onboard charger, quicker than several fully electric models we list, and it is not what most buyers expect from a PHEV. The battery is small, 25.7 kWh gross and 19.7 kWh usable for 76 miles of electric running, so the combination of a big charger and a modest pack means the Kodiaq iV refills faster than almost anything else on the drive.

That changes the buying advice. The usual PHEV assumption is a slow 3.6 kW charger, a granny lead in the boot and no reason to spend on 32A. None of it holds here. Skoda supplies a 32A Type 2 cable with the car, lists the Mode 2 three-pin lead as a £180 option that plenty of owners left off the order, and fits a charger that will happily take everything a home wallbox can send. The 32A cable is the correct purchase on a Kodiaq iV, not the 16A one.

Any Kodiaq iV uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. One caution on badges first: only the iV plugs in. Skoda's e-TEC cars are 48 volt mild hybrids with no inlet, and SE, SE L, SportLine and L&K all exist in both forms. The iV is also five-seat only, so a seven-seat Kodiaq is never the plug-in.

Speed at home works out like this. That 11 kW assumes three separate phases feeding the charger, and ordinary UK housing stock is wired for one, so the Kodiaq iV draws 7.4 kW on a driveway. Our 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable gives all of it and empties to full in 3 hours, which is short enough to fit inside any cheap-rate window with hours to spare. A 32A three-phase lead cuts that to 2 hours at a workplace post, a saving of one hour on a battery you were going to fill overnight anyway, so it is hard to justify on this car.

The 16A cable is the false economy here. It holds the Kodiaq iV at 3.7 kW and doubles the charge to 6 hours, dropping the miles returned per hour from about 29 to about 14. On a car with 76 miles of electric range that is the difference between plugging in after the school run and getting a full battery back before dinner, or not. If you do more than one charge a day, and the Kodiaq iV is the kind of car that gets two, the 32A lead is the one that keeps up.

Because the three-pin lead was a cost option, many used Kodiaq iVs will not have one. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin cable covers that gap at 2.3 kW, roughly 9 miles of electric range an hour and 9 hours 45 mins for a full charge. That is an entirely usable overnight method on a battery this size, unlike on a full EV, and it makes a socket in a relative's garage genuinely worth using. It adjusts from 6A to 12A and is IP67 sealed.

Length needs more thought than usual, because the charge port is on the front nearside wing, not at the back. A wallbox positioned for a rear-port car, or a Kodiaq iV reversed onto the drive, leaves the socket a long way from the unit, and a 5m lead that would have been fine on a rear-port SUV comes up short. Step up rather than default down: 10m is the reliable answer unless you park nose in with the charge point on the left of the bay, in which case 5m reaches easily. Detached garages and shared parking are 15m and 20m territory.

What is the best charging cable for a Skoda Kodiaq iV?

The 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the best charging cable for a Skoda Kodiaq iV. Its onboard charger is rated at 11 kW three phase, so at home it will take the full 7.4 kW a single-phase supply provides and fill the 19.7 kWh usable battery in 3 hours. The cheaper 16A lead is the usual PHEV choice and the wrong one here, because it wastes half the charger.

Does a Skoda Kodiaq e-TEC plug in?

No. Skoda's e-TEC badge means a 48 volt mild hybrid, and there is no charging socket anywhere on one, so nothing will plug in. It is one of the faster AC chargers in this class and the reason a Kodiaq iV can be refilled during an afternoon rather than only overnight.

Does the Skoda Kodiaq iV come with a three-pin cable?

Not as standard. A 32A Type 2 cable is supplied with the Skoda Kodiaq iV, while the Mode 2 three-pin lead is a £180 option that many buyers did not tick, so a lot of cars reach their second owner without one. At 2.3 kW a three-pin lead still fills this 19.7 kWh battery in 9 hours 45 mins, which makes it a real overnight option away from home rather than a token spare.

Is the three-phase cable a waste of money on a Kodiaq iV?

Close to it for most owners. A Skoda Kodiaq iV at a genuine three-phase post charges at 11 kW and takes 2 hours instead of 3, but at home a single-phase supply caps it at 7.4 kW and the three-phase lead behaves exactly like the standard 32A one. Saving one hour on a charge you sleep through is rarely worth the extra outlay.

How long a lead does a front-port Kodiaq iV need?

Ten metres suits most Skoda Kodiaq iV owners, because the charge port is on the front nearside wing rather than at the rear. A wallbox sited for a rear-port car, or a Kodiaq iV reversed onto the drive, puts the socket at the wrong end of a fairly long SUV. Five metres only works when the car noses in and the unit is on the left of the bay. Where the parking spot is not fixed, 15m and 20m remove the problem entirely.

One battery and one charger means one row, but two badges need separating before you order. An e-TEC Kodiaq is a 48 volt mild hybrid with no inlet on it at all, and nothing whatsoever will plug into one; because SE, SE L, SportLine and L&K are sold in both forms, only the iV letters settle it, and a seven-seat car is never the plug-in. What makes the iV odd is that 11 kW rating, far beyond the 3.6 kW most plug-in hybrids manage. A single-phase British supply trims it to 7.4 kW, still quick enough to refill the pack in three hours, and the 32A single-phase lead is what carries that; a 16A cable would leave half the hardware idle. Three phases would save you an hour on a charge you sleep through anyway.

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
