Product Description

One nameplate, two opposite recommendations. If your BMW X3 plug-in hybrid was built between 2020 and 2024 it is a G01, and the cheapest cable we stock is already as fast as that car can go. If it arrived after that it is a G45, and the cheap cable will hold it back badly. Settle which camp you are in before you spend anything.

Both generations use a Type 2 inlet, so a Type 2 to Type 2 lead is what fits either way. The disagreement is purely about current rating.

G01, 2020 to 2024, where 16A is all the car can use

The G01 xDrive30e holds 12.0 kWh, manages about 29 miles on electricity alone, and accepts 3.7 kW on AC. A 16A lead supplies exactly 3.7 kW. The consequence is blunt: a 32A cable, single phase or three phase, cannot shorten this car's charge by a single minute. It is money spent for no result, and we would rather say so than quietly take it. Buy 16A on a G01 and keep the difference in your pocket.

G45, 2024 onwards, where 32A earns its money

The current 30e xDrive carries 19.7 kWh usable, which is 64% more than the outgoing car, and covers about 53 miles of electric range. It accepts 11 kW as standard. Fed by 16A that pack wants six hours. Fed by 32A it wants three. On this generation the upgrade repays itself inside the first week of ownership.

Worth being precise about that 11 kW headline, though, because it assumes three phases. A house in Britain is fed by one phase only, which means the car pulls 7.4 kW from a domestic supply, and all 7.4 kW of it arrives through our 32A single-phase Type 2 cable. Pick the three-phase version only where three phases really are present, which in practice means a workplace or a commercial site.

The X3 plug-in hybrid is not the iX3

Both plug in, which is precisely why this is the distinction worth getting right. The iX3 is a separate battery electric model with a far bigger pack and its own charging advice. Petrol and diesel X3s have no socket fitted.

Before you pick a length, find the socket. On the 2020 to 2024 G01 it lives in the front nearside wing, the left hand side as you look forwards, confirmed by BMW. For the G45 BMW publishes no position, so check the car itself rather than working from a photo of the older one.

From a household socket our Type 2 to 3-Pin cable gives 2.3 kW. That refills a G01 in six hours and a G45 in nearly ten, so the older car handles it comfortably overnight while the newer one uses most of the night to do it. The lead is IP67 sealed for outdoor use and earns its place in the boot for stops away from home.

Lengths available run 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m. Pace out the run from your wallbox to the socket with the X3 sitting where it normally sits, and pick a length that arrives without pulling tight.

Figures for the 2020 to 2024 car are calculated on its 12.0 kWh gross capacity, since BMW publishes no usable number, which makes them a slight overestimate.

What cable does a BMW X3 xDrive30e need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Every BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid uses the Type 2 inlet, whether it is the 2020 to 2024 G01 or the newer G45 30e xDrive. All that changes between them is the current rating you should be paying for.

Do the older and newer BMW X3 plug-in hybrids charge at the same speed?

No, and the difference is large. A 2020 to 2024 BMW X3 xDrive30e accepts 3.7 kW. The 2024 onwards 30e xDrive accepts 11 kW, which on a British single-phase home supply arrives as 7.4 kW. That is double the rate going into a battery 64% larger.

Is a 32A cable a waste of money on a 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e?

Yes it is. A 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e is a G01, and its onboard charger stops at 3.7 kW, which 16A supplies in full already. The 32A version finishes in the same 3 hours 45 minutes and costs you more to get there. Buy 16A.

Would a three-phase cable help a BMW X3 30e xDrive?

Only where a three-phase supply exists, which almost no British house has. A BMW X3 30e xDrive can use the full 11 kW at a workplace or commercial charge point wired for three phases. At home the single-phase 32A cable already passes on the 7.4 kW your supply can deliver.

Can a BMW X3 xDrive30e be charged from a household socket?

Yes. A BMW X3 xDrive30e takes about six hours from a three-pin socket if it is the 2020 to 2024 car, and nearer ten hours on the 2024 onwards model, both at 2.3 kW. The lead is IP67 sealed so it copes outdoors, though a wallbox remains the better daily answer.

How many metres of cable does a BMW X3 xDrive30e need?

10m suits most driveways, with 5m enough when the BMW X3 stops right beside the wallbox. The X3 is a long car, so whether you park nose in or reverse in changes the answer more than you might expect. Check the distance to the socket in your normal spot. For shared bays and outbuildings there are 15m and 20m options.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
