Product Description

Two BMW X1 plug-in hybrids can carry the same badge, sit in the same showroom, and still charge at completely different speeds. The badge will not tell you which one is on your driveway. The build date will, because BMW has moved the onboard charger twice in this model's life.

Whichever one you own, the inlet is Type 2, so the cable is a Type 2 to Type 2. That never varies across the range, and the same connector fits every home wallbox and every untethered post in Britain.

Working out which BMW X1 you actually have

The F48 xDrive25e, built 2020 to 2022, has a 10.0 kWh battery and accepts 3.7 kW on AC, worth roughly 30 miles of electric running. The U11 xDrive25e and xDrive30e, from 2023, moved up to 16.3 kWh gross and 14.2 kWh usable, now rated at 47 to 50 miles WLTP after a revision down from the 50 to 56 quoted at launch. Both U11 variants use identical batteries and identical charging hardware, so only motor output separates the two badges.

Then comes the split that catches owners out. U11 cars built up to about February 2025 accept 7.4 kW. Cars built from March 2025 accept 11 kW, a change BMW confirmed in a Spring 2025 press release. Same shape, same badge, same model year in some cases, different ceiling. Your V5C and the plate under the bonnet both carry a build date, and that date settles the question.

One thing to be clear about: 11 kW is a three-phase rating. British homes are supplied with a single phase, so an 11 kW car draws 7.4 kW at home, and our 32A single-phase Type 2 cable hands over every watt of that. The three-phase version is only worth buying if your supply genuinely carries three phases, which is rare outside workplaces and industrial units.

When the 16A cable is the right buy

On the 2020 to 2022 F48 it is the only sensible buy. That car will not draw more than 3.7 kW no matter what you connect to it, and 16A already delivers 3.7 kW. Paying the extra for 32A on an F48 buys nothing, not one minute off the charge. We would rather tell you that than take the higher order.

From 2023 the position reverses. On a U11 the 32A cable halves the time against 16A, and on a March 2025 build the gap widens again, so 32A is the cable to order.

The X1 plug-in hybrid is not the iX1

Both cars plug in and both use Type 2, which is exactly why the two get confused. The iX1 is a battery electric model carrying roughly four and a half times the battery of the plug-in hybrid, so it needs its own advice on speed and length. Petrol and diesel X1s have no socket at all.

Charge port position is worth checking before you measure. The F48 xDrive25e has its socket in the front nearside wing, on the left as you face forward, confirmed by BMW. For the U11 plug-in hybrid BMW publishes no position, so walk round your own car and look. Do not assume it matches the iX1, because it does not sit in the same place.

A household socket is a genuine option on a battery this size. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin cable runs at 2.3 kW and fills a U11 in about seven hours, which fits inside a night. It is IP67 sealed, so it copes outdoors, and it is the obvious second cable to keep in the boot for weekends away from your own wallbox.

Lengths run from 5m to 20m. Measure from the wallbox to wherever the socket ends up when the car is parked as it normally sits, then allow enough to route the cable round the bodywork rather than across a path.

These times are worked from the 10.0 kWh gross capacity because BMW does not publish a usable figure for the 2020 to 2022 car, so treat them as a slight overestimate.

Range added per hour comes from the car's WLTP electric range. Cold weather and a motorway commute will both bring this down.

Which charging cable does a BMW X1 xDrive30e need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in the 32A single-phase version. The BMW X1 xDrive30e is a U11, built from 2023, so it takes either 7.4 kW or 11 kW depending on build date, and 32A single phase gives it everything a British home supply can carry.

Why does my BMW X1 charge slower than a newer one?

Because the onboard charger inside the BMW X1 has changed twice. An F48 from 2020 to 2022 stops at 3.7 kW, a U11 built between 2023 and February 2025 reaches 7.4 kW, and a March 2025 build onwards reaches 11 kW. The wallbox and the cable are not holding you back, the car is.

Is a 32A cable worth it on a BMW X1 xDrive25e?

That depends entirely on the year. On a 2020 to 2022 BMW X1 xDrive25e it is not, because the car caps at 3.7 kW and 16A already supplies that, so you pay more for the same three hours. On a 2023 onwards xDrive25e it certainly is, since the car nearly halves its charge time.

Does a BMW X1 plug-in hybrid take the same cable as an iX1?

Yes, one Type 2 to Type 2 cable serves both, but the reasoning behind the choice differs. The iX1 holds roughly four and a half times the battery of the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid, so current rating counts for far more there, and the two models do not put the socket in the same spot.

How long does a BMW X1 xDrive30e take on a three-pin socket?

Around seven hours from empty. A BMW X1 xDrive30e gains roughly 8 miles of range an hour at 2.3 kW, so a complete charge fits inside an ordinary night. That makes the 3-Pin cable a workable fallback on this car rather than a last resort.

What length cable does a BMW X1 plug-in hybrid need?

5m for a driveway where the BMW X1 parks alongside the wallbox, 10m for almost everything else. Measure from the unit to the socket with the car in its usual position, then allow extra for routing the cable round the body instead of across a walkway. 15m and 20m cover shared bays and detached garages.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
