Product Description

The Audi Q5 TFSI e charging cable answer has not changed since 2019: a Type 2 to Type 2, and the car has accepted 7.4 kW on AC from its very first year on sale. Plug-in hybrids are usually the slow chargers of a range. This one never was.

Every Q5 that plugs in, whether it wears the TFSI e badge or the e-hybrid name Audi moved to in 2025, uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The petrol and diesel Q5, the Q5 Sportback and the SQ5 have no socket to plug into at all.

The 2025 e-hybrid quotes 11 kW, and that number needs a caveat. 11 kW is a three-phase rating. British homes are supplied with a single phase, so an 11 kW Q5 draws 7.4 kW on a domestic feed, and the 32A single-phase Type 2 cable hands over every watt of it. The 32A three-phase cable only earns its price where a genuine three-phase supply exists, which in practice means a workplace or a farm rather than a driveway.

The battery grew, the cable answer stayed put

Between 2019 and 2025 the pack went from 14.1 kWh gross to 17.9 kWh, and then with the e-hybrid to 25.9 kWh. Electric range roughly doubled along the way, from over 26 miles to up to 61 miles WLTP. Through all of it the home charging rate held at 7.4 kW, so the 32A cable that suited a 2019 car suits a 2026 one. What the bigger battery changes is not which cable to buy but how much the wrong one costs you.

A 16A cable caps the Q5 at 3.7 kW. On a 2021 to 2025 TFSI e that turns a 2 hour 15 minute charge into 4 hours 30. On the e-hybrid it means 6 hours 15 instead of 3 hours 15. In cheap-rate terms, a five hour overnight window on 16A gives an e-hybrid owner around 55 miles of electric running, where the 32A cable gives roughly 110. The price gap between the two cables is paid back inside a few months of that.

The Type 2 to 3-Pin cable runs at 2.3 kW, worth about 6 miles an hour on a Q5 TFSI e and 7 on a Q5 e-hybrid. That is a whole night for a full battery, so it is not a wallbox replacement. It is the cable you keep in the boot for a week at a cottage or a night at a relative's house, and it is IP67 sealed so leaving it out in the rain is not a problem.

Length deserves a moment on this car, because Audi put the flap somewhere unusual. The Q5 charges from the rear nearside quarter panel, above the wheel arch, on the opposite side of the car to the fuel filler and at the opposite end of the car to most rivals. Reverse onto a driveway with the wallbox by the house and 5m usually reaches. Park nose in and the socket sits nearly the whole length of the car further away than owners expect, which is where 10m starts to matter. The older TFSI e cars were supplied with a Mode 3 Type 2 cable and a three-pin cable as standard, though Audi never published their length or amperage, so measure rather than assume the original still reaches.

The other Audi plug-in models charge to their own rules. The Q3 TFSI e is the smaller plug-in SUV, the Q6 e-tron is the fully electric alternative in the same part of the range, and the whole Audi charging cable range is listed together.

An Audi Q5 TFSI e needs a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, and the 32A single-phase version is the one to buy. The car has a Type 2 inlet and a 7.4 kW onboard charger, which the 32A cable matches exactly. A 16A cable plugs into the same socket but holds the Q5 down to 3.7 kW, doubling the time from empty.

Do the Q5 TFSI e and the newer Q5 e-hybrid charge at the same speed?

At home, yes. The Audi Q5 TFSI e takes 7.4 kW and the Q5 e-hybrid is rated at 11 kW, but 11 kW needs three phases and a British house is fed by one, so the e-hybrid also settles at 7.4 kW on a domestic wallbox. Is a three-phase cable worth it on an Audi Q5 e-hybrid?

Audi renamed the plug-in Q5 from TFSI e to e-hybrid in 2025, but the cable never changed. Every generation charges through a Type 2 inlet, and 32A single phase is the right buy for all of them. The 2021 to 2025 car uses its full 7.4 kW, and the 2025 e-hybrid is quoted at 11 kW only because that is a three-phase rating, so on a single-phase British home supply it also draws 7.4 kW. The 32A three-phase cable is worth the extra only where a real three-phase supply is available.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.
