Product Description

Renault has never fitted one onboard charger across its electric cars, which is why the cable that suited your last Renault may be the wrong one for this Renault 5 E-Tech. The 5 accepts 11 kW on AC, and it accepts it whether you ordered the 40 kWh Urban Range or the 52 kWh Comfort Range. The battery decides how long you wait; it does not change how hard the car pulls.

Every Renault 5 E-Tech charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Renault settled on the Type 2 inlet across its electric line-up years ago and the 5 follows it, so the plug end is one thing you do not have to decide.

The 11 kW figure is a three-phase number. Domestic supplies in Britain are single phase, so a home wallbox will give the car no more than 7.4 kW, and our 1-Phase, 32A cable passes all 7.4 kW straight through. A 22 kW three-phase cable cannot push a Renault 5 past its own 11 kW limit, and it needs three-phase power behind the socket before it does anything the 32A cannot, which in practice means a workplace or a commercial building rather than a house.

Avoid the 16A cable. It holds the car at 3.7 kW, which stretches the Comfort Range's eight hour charge to nearly sixteen and the Urban Range's six hours to over twelve. It also halves what you can put in during a cheap overnight rate window, from around 36 miles of range an hour to 18.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable comes in 5m and 10m and draws 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13A socket, which is about eleven miles of range an hour. On a 40 kWh Urban Range that makes an overnight stay worth roughly 130 miles, so it is a useful thing to own even once you have a wallbox. If you are moving around the Renault range, check the number rather than reuse the habit. The Renault Zoe that the 5 replaces took 22 kW on AC, so a Zoe driver used to filling up quickly at a three-phase post at work will find the 5 tops out at 11 kW. Which charging cable does a Renault 5 E-Tech need?

A Renault 5 E-Tech takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and for charging at home you want the 32A single phase, which runs at 7.4 kW. Add a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable as well if there is no wallbox where you park, since that is the only way to draw from an ordinary socket.

Do the two Renault 5 E-Tech batteries charge at the same speed?

Yes. Both Renault 5 E-Tech batteries accept 11 kW on AC, so the rate is identical and only the duration differs. On a 7.4 kW home wallbox the 40 kWh Urban Range finishes in roughly 6 hours where the 52 kWh Comfort Range needs 8, purely because there is less to fill.

Is a 22kW three-phase cable worth it on a Renault 5 E-Tech?

Not at a British house. A Renault 5 E-Tech caps its AC intake at 11 kW, so a 22kW cable never delivers 22 kW to this car, and with a single phase supply behind it the cable performs precisely as the 32A single-phase one does. Where three-phase power is available, that 11 kW takes a 52 kWh Comfort Range from empty to full in about 5 hours rather than 8.

How long does a Renault 5 E-Tech take to charge at home?

Around 8 hours for a 52 kWh Comfort Range and around 6 hours for a 40 kWh Urban Range, empty to full on a 7.4 kW wallbox using the 32A cable. A 16A cable stretches those to nearly sixteen hours and over twelve. Put another way, a six hour off-peak window is worth roughly 215 miles on the 32A and about 108 miles on the 16A.

Is a three-pin cable useful for a Renault 5 E-Tech?

Yes, as a second cable rather than your main one. A Renault 5 E-Tech pulls 2.3 kW from a 13A socket, about eleven miles of range an hour, so a night parked at a friend's house is worth roughly 130 miles on the Urban Range. It is slow for a full charge and valuable whenever you stop somewhere with no post nearby.

What length charging cable does a Renault 5 E-Tech need?

5m reaches in most driveways, since the Renault 5 E-Tech is a short car at just over four metres and the charge flap ends up close to a wall unit. Measure from the wallbox to the flap with the car standing where you normally leave it, allowing enough slack that nothing is under tension. Choose 10m for street parking, a shared bay, or a wallbox fitted around a corner.

Both batteries accept the same 11 kW, so the cable choice is the same either way. On a UK single-phase home supply the car draws 7.4 kW, which is what our 32A single-phase cable delivers. The 32A three-phase cable is only worth buying if you have a genuine three-phase supply, and even then the car caps itself at 11 kW.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
