Product Description

The Renault 5 E-Tech is one of the easier cars to buy a cable for, once you know one number. It takes 11 kW on AC, and that figure is the same whether you have the 40 kWh Urban Range or the 52 kWh Comfort Range. Battery size changes how long the charge takes, not how fast the car will accept it.

Every Renault 5 E-Tech uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. There is no Type 1 version, so the connector choice is settled.

The 11 kW figure is a three-phase rating. UK homes are single-phase, so on a home wallbox the car draws a maximum of 7.4 kW. Our 1-Phase, 32A cable delivers exactly that and is the right cable for almost every Renault 5 owner. The 3-Phase 32A cable is rated to 22 kW and will work perfectly, but the car caps itself at 11 kW, so it only earns its money if you have a genuine three-phase supply at home or at work.

A 16A cable limits the car to 3.7 kW, which roughly doubles your charging time for a small saving. We stock the Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable in 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m for awkward driveways and difficult charge point placement.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable comes in 5m and 10m and charges from an ordinary UK 13A socket at 2.3 kW. It is the sensible thing to keep in the boot if you do not have a wallbox yet. More on charging from a domestic socket.

Renault 5 E-Tech Charging Cable FAQs

Which charging cable should I buy for my Renault 5 E-Tech?

If you charge at home from a wallbox, buy the Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 32A single phase. That is 7.4 kW, the fastest a UK single-phase home supply can give the car. Pick the length that reaches your charge point comfortably and go one size longer if you are unsure. If you have no wallbox, the Type 2 to 3-Pin cable lets you charge from an ordinary socket instead.

Is the 3-Phase 22kW cable worth it for a Renault 5?

Only if you have a three-phase supply. The Renault 5 accepts 11 kW maximum, so a 22kW cable cannot push more than 11 kW into the car. On three phase that 11 kW takes a 52 kWh Comfort Range from empty to full in about 5 hours instead of 8. On single phase, which is nearly every UK home, the 22kW cable behaves exactly like the 32A single-phase one.

Does the 40 kWh Renault 5 charge slower than the 52 kWh?

No. Both accept 11 kW on AC. The 40 kWh car simply finishes sooner because there is less battery to fill, roughly 6 hours on a 7.4 kW home wallbox against 8 hours for the 52 kWh.

What length cable do I need?

Measure from your charge point to where the charging flap sits when the car is parked, then allow slack so the cable hangs without strain. 5m suits a wallbox beside the parking space. 10m is the most popular choice and covers most driveways. 15m and 20m exist for detached garages, shared parking and charge points on the wrong side of the house.

Will a third-party cable affect my Renault warranty?

No. A cable built to the IEC 62196 Type 2 standard and carrying CE and TUV certification does not affect your vehicle warranty. Ours carry a two-year manufacturer's warranty of their own.

Can I leave the cable outside?

Yes. Our Type 2 to Type 2 cables are IP55 rated and our Type 2 to 3-Pin cables are IP67 rated. Both operate from -30C to 55C, so the cable can live in the boot or on the driveway all year round.

Both batteries accept the same 11 kW, so the cable choice is the same either way. On a UK single-phase home supply the car draws 7.4 kW, which is what our 32A single-phase cable delivers. The 32A three-phase cable is only worth buying if you have a genuine three-phase supply, and even then the car caps itself at 11 kW.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

    A cable is used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It’s helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
