Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Volkswagen ID3 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The 22 kW cable matches the highest rate the model reaches, and a three-phase supply is where that rate is actually reachable.

If it only ever charges at home, buy down. A house supply is single phase, so the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) hands over every watt of it.

Every Volkswagen ID.3 sold in the UK since 2020 has a Type 2 inlet and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, but the ID.3 is one of the few electric cars where the battery you picked also picked your onboard charger. Pro, Pro S, GTX and every new ID.3 Neo carry an 11 kW unit and draw 7.4 kW from a home wallbox. The Pure, with the 45 kWh pack from 2021 and the 52 kWh pack from 2024, has a 7.2 kW single phase charger, and 7.2 kW is the most it will take from any AC socket anywhere. That is why the badge matters here when it does not on most cars: on an ID.3 the small battery is also the slow one, by a margin that is invisible on a driveway and large at a three phase post. The cable answer still comes out the same for both, and this page shows why.

Which Volkswagen ID.3 charging cable to buy

Full speed at home on every ID.3: the 32A single phase cable. Our menu lists it as 32amp (7.2kW). On a Pro, Pro S, GTX or Neo it carries the 7.4 kW a domestic wallbox puts out, which is all an 11 kW car can use from one phase, and on a Pure it carries the 7.2 kW the car's own charger stops at. Nothing dearer charges either car any quicker at home. Works, but no faster on a Pure: the 32A three phase cable. A three phase cable is only ever as quick as the charger inside the car, and the Pure's is a single phase unit, so this lead gives a 52 kWh Pure the same 8 hours 15 minutes everywhere. On an 11 kW ID.3 it earns its keep only where three phases actually arrive, typically a workplace bay or a 22 kW public post, where a 79 kWh Pro S drops from 12 hours to 8 and a 59 kWh Pro from 9 hours to 6. Too slow to be worth the saving: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds any ID.3 to 3.7 kW, which means 18 hours for a Pro that the 32A lead finishes in 9, and about 119 miles from a seven hour cheap rate window against roughly 238. Even on the 52 kWh Pure it takes 16 hours where 8 hours 15 minutes costs a few pounds more.

Once the amperage is fixed the length question is settled by the position of the flap. Volkswagen puts the ID.3's charge port on the rear quarter panel on the right hand side, which in the UK is the driver's side, and the car is 4.26 metres long, 4.32 for the GTX with its longer bumpers. Reverse onto a drive with the wallbox on the driver's side and the socket sits within a metre of it, so 5 metres is plenty. Drive in forwards and the flap ends up at the kerb end of the car, diagonally opposite a wallbox by the front door, and the run becomes the car's length plus the drive's width, which is 10 metre territory, as is any plan to charge at a kerbside post. Of the 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m lengths we stock, the two longest are for a garage set back from the house or a shared parking court, and on this product they come in 32A single phase only, which is the right rating for every ID.3 anyway.

Volkswagen UK lists a Mode 3 Type 2 cable as standard equipment on the ID.3, and its 2021 press pack spelled it out as "charging cable Mode 3 Type 2, 32 A", so a new vehicle should arrive with a wallbox lead in the boot. What it does not arrive with is anything that plugs into a wall socket, and a used ID.3 often turns up with no cable at all because the first owner kept it for the next car. The gap is filled by our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, the granny charger, which the menu lists as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW). It draws 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket and puts about 11 miles an hour into an ID.3, so a night at a relative's house or a holiday cottage is worth around 80 miles by morning. A full charge from empty would take 29 hours on a Pro, so it is a cable to own rather than rely on, and its built in Type B RCD and adjustable current protect an old ring main from becoming the weak link.

The 2021 to 2022 Pure Performance, 45 kWh usable and 217 miles WLTP, is the other 7.2 kW ID.3 and refills in 7 hours on the 32A cable. The GTX Performance is rated at 369 miles on the 79 kWh pack, so its miles per hour run about two above the Pro S row. The ID.3 Neo, on sale in the UK from August 2026 with 50, 58 and 79 kWh batteries and an 11 kW charger on all three, needs 7 hours 45 minutes, 8 hours 45 minutes and 12 hours respectively at 7.4 kW. Volkswagen quotes the Pro at 58 kWh net where independent testing measures 59, a difference of a few minutes across a full charge. Reckon on fewer miles per hour once the thermometer drops or the cruise control is set for the motorway.

Which Volkswagen ID.3 versions only charge at 7.2 kW?

The Pure, in both of its forms: the 45 kWh Pure Performance sold from 2021 to 2022 and the 52 kWh Pure Essential and Pure Match sold from 2024. Volkswagen fitted both with a 7.2 kW single phase onboard charger, while every Pro, Pro S and GTX has an 11 kW three phase unit, as does every version of the ID.3 Neo. On a UK home wallbox the two groups are 0.2 kW apart, so the Pure is not a slow car to live with; the gap only opens at a workplace or public three phase supply.

Does a Volkswagen ID.3 come with a charging cable?

A new ID.3 does, but only the wallbox kind. Volkswagen UK's specification lists a Mode 3 Type 2 cable as standard, which is the lead for a home charger or an untethered public post, and it does not list a three pin cable at all. Buying a used Volkswagen ID.3 is another matter, because the Type 2 cable is exactly the item a seller forgets to hand over or quietly keeps for their next electric car, so find out what is in the boot floor compartment before you assume.

Will the three phase cable do anything on a Volkswagen ID.3?

On a Pure, nothing at all, because that car's onboard charger only uses one phase and a three phase cable cannot change that. On a Pro, Pro S, GTX or Neo it lets the car take its full 11 kW wherever three phases are genuinely present, which cuts a 79 kWh Pro S from 12 hours to 8, but plugged into a single phase house it produces exactly the 7.4 kW the cheaper 32A cable produces. Buy it for a workplace charger or a regular 22 kW destination post, not for the driveway.

Is the ID.3 Neo charged any differently from the older ID.3?

No. The Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, on sale in the UK from August 2026 in Life, Style and Style Launch Edition trims, keeps the Type 2 inlet on the rear right and Volkswagen quotes 11 kW AC for all three batteries, 50, 58 and 79 kWh, so the 32A single phase cable remains the one to buy. The only real change for cable buyers is that the Neo has no 7.2 kW version, so the Pure caveat on this page does not apply to it.

What does a seven hour cheap rate window put back into an ID.3?

Roughly 230 to 240 miles into any Volkswagen ID.3 on the 32A cable, because the Pro adds about 34 miles an hour at 7.4 kW and the Pure about 33 miles an hour at 7.2 kW, which is close to a full battery on both. Over the same seven hours the 16A cable puts back about 119 miles, so an owner who commutes 40 miles a day and charges twice a week is fine, while an owner who wants the car full every morning is not.

Is 5 metres enough cable for a Volkswagen ID.3 on a driveway?

It is if the car is reversed in and the wallbox is on the driver's side, where the ID.3's charge port sits on the rear quarter, and many owners in that position find even 5 metres has a coil left over. It is not if the car goes in nose first, because the flap is then at the far end of a 4.26 metre car and the lead has to reach it around the bumper, or if the wallbox is on the passenger side of the drive. In either of those cases 10 metres avoids stretching a cable across the bonnet every night.

Compatibility

Every ID.3 is fully electric and uses Type 2. The important thing to know is that the Pure does not charge as fast as the rest of the range. Every ID.3 Pure, on either battery size, is limited to 7.2 kW. Every Pro, Pro S and GTX does 11 kW. You will see sites claiming 11 kW across the whole range: that is wrong for the Pure.

Trim level makes no difference to charging. Essential, Match, Style, Tour and Launch Edition all use the charger that comes with the battery.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
