Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The MG ZS accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC. A 32A single-phase lead delivers that figure in full, which is why it is the one we recommend. The three-phase cable would be money spent on capacity the car cannot take.

An MG ZS EV charging cable is one of the easier decisions in this catalogue, because the car never draws more than about 7 kW on AC and never has. MG changed the battery three times between 2019 and 2023, from 44.5 kWh to 51.1 kWh to the 72.6 kWh Long Range, and left the onboard charger roughly where it started each time. Check the badge before buying anything, though. The MG ZS sold from 2024 is a petrol hybrid with no charging socket at all, and only the ZS EV built between 2019 and 2023 takes a cable.

Every MG ZS EV uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet hides behind the MG badge in the centre of the grille, so the socket sits at the very nose of the car rather than on a rear wing like most rivals.

Buy the 32A single phase version. A British house is fed by one phase and one phase tops out at 7.4 kW, which is already more than the ZS EV will accept. Three phase power is a commercial and industrial supply, so the 22 kW cable has nothing extra to offer this car on a driveway, and nothing extra to offer it at a workplace either, because the ceiling is inside the MG rather than in the wiring.

The 16A cable saves a little and costs a lot of time. On the 72.6 kWh Long Range it stretches a full charge from 11 hours to 20 hours 45 minutes, so the car stops finishing inside one night. Recovery falls from about 28 miles an hour to 15, meaning a seven hour cheap rate window puts back roughly 196 miles on the better cable and about 105 on the cheaper one. The saving is thirteen pounds on a five metre lead.

Keep a Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable in the boot anyway. It pulls 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket, about 9 miles an hour on the Long Range car, so a night parked at a relative's house is worth roughly 90 miles. Our guide covers what a household socket really gives an electric car.

What charging cable does an MG ZS EV need?

Buy the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The MG ZS EV never draws more than about 7 kW on AC, so that lead saturates the onboard charger on every battery MG fitted, from the 2019 44.5 kWh car through to the 72.6 kWh Long Range.

Would a 22kW cable speed up an MG ZS EV?

No. An MG ZS EV cannot accept 22 kW from any source, so the three phase cable changes nothing on a driveway and nothing at a workplace with three genuine phases either. The ceiling sits in the car's own onboard charger rather than in the supply feeding it.

Do the three MG ZS EV batteries charge at different speeds?

They finish at different times because they hold different amounts, not because they fill at different rates. On a 32A cable the 44.5 kWh MG ZS EV takes about 7 hours 15 minutes from empty, the 51.1 kWh car about 8 hours 30 minutes and the 72.6 kWh Long Range about 11 hours.

How long a cable does an MG ZS EV need?

5m works if you park nose in to the wallbox, because the MG ZS EV takes its charge through the front grille rather than through a wing. Reverse onto the drive, or park with the nose pointing away from the unit, and the lead has to travel the whole 4.3 metre length of the car, which is where 10m earns its money.

Does an MG ZS EV need its own cable for public charging?

Yes, on AC. Most street and car park posts in Britain are untethered Type 2, meaning the socket is bare and the driver supplies the lead. A 5m cable reaches on the majority of bays and a 10m one handles those where the post ends up behind the parking space.

How much range does an MG ZS EV gain in one cheap rate window?

About 196 miles across a seven hour window on a 32A cable with the 72.6 kWh Long Range battery, and around 189 miles on the 51.1 kWh car. Swap to the 16A cable and both drop to roughly 105 miles, which is where the cheaper lead stops paying for itself.

Compatibility

Two completely different ZS models share this name and only one of them can be charged. The ZS EV is a full electric car with a Type 2 socket and CCS rapid charging. The ZS Hybrid+ is self-charging, with a small battery topped up by the petrol engine and no charging port at all. The current petrol ZS likewise has nothing to plug into. MG's naming is a reliable guide here: EV means it charges, Hybrid+ means it does not. On the ZS EV, sources disagree about whether the 2022 onwards cars have a single-phase or a three-phase charger, so we have shown that honestly below rather than guess. At home on a single-phase supply it makes no practical difference: a 32A Type 2 cable is the right buy.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
