The Renault Zoe accepts up to 22 kW on AC. Nothing in the range can outrun a 22 kW lead, and a three-phase charge point is where the extra capacity turns into hours saved.

Home charging only? One phase is all a British house has, which means 7.4 kW on a wallbox. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) covers that and saves you the difference.

A Renault Zoe charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, with the same connector at both ends, on every UK car, from the 2013 launch model to the final Z.E.50 built in 2024, and the Zoe accepts up to 22 kW AC through its Chameleon onboard charger. On a home wallbox it draws 7.4 kW. Renault UK's Z.E.50 press material quotes 22 kW for the R110 and R135 motors, and the R90 and R110 Z.E.40 cars before them carry the same charger. That number puts the Zoe in a category of its own. On most electric vehicles the 22 kW three phase lead is money spent on a rate the car cannot draw; a Zoe pulls the full 22 kW from any three phase public post, and the same cable still charges it at 7.4 kW on the drive.

Which Renault Zoe charging cable to buy

For the driveway: the 32A single phase cable. Labelled 32amp (7.2kW) on the option list, it carries 7.4 kW, the most a single phase domestic power supply gives any car, so a 52 kWh Z.E.50 is full in 8 hours and a 41 kWh Z.E.40 in 6 hours 15 minutes. It is also the only cable we make in 15 and 20 metre lengths. Worth the extra on a Zoe and very few cars besides: the 32A three phase cable. Labelled 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it lets the Chameleon charger draw all 22 kW at a three phase post, so the Z.E.50 refills in 2 hours 45 minutes and gains roughly 101 miles an hour, about the length of a supermarket shop. Plugged into a house wallbox the same lead gives 7.4 kW and nothing more, because a domestic meter has one phase to offer, which means the home ceiling is 7.4 kW whichever lead you buy. Buy it if a 22 kW public charging point sits at your workplace, in a town centre car park or at the supermarket you use; buy the single phase cable if the car only ever charges at home. A false economy on this battery: the 16A cable. Labelled 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car to 3.7 kW, doubling the Z.E.50 charge to 16 hours and cutting a seven hour cheap rate window from about 238 miles to about 119. On a car that can take six times as much, it is the wrong saving.

Length is an easier call on a Zoe than on most cars. The charge port sits in the centre of the nose, behind the Renault diamond, and the car is 4.09 metres long. Drive in forwards towards a wallbox on the house wall and the socket finishes within a metre or two of the unit, so 5 metres reaches from either side of the drive. Reverse in and the port is at the far end of the car from the wall, which is where 10 metres is needed. Street parking, where the nose lands somewhere different each night, or a wallbox on a garage set back from the house, is the case for the 15 or 20 metre single phase lead. Public 22 kW posts are not tethered, so you bring your own lead, and they normally stand at the bay edge, so a 5 metre three phase cable covers those unless you routinely share a post with the car parked beside you.

Because the Zoe went out of production in 2024, every one for sale is now a used electric vehicle and the boot holds whatever the last owner left in it. Renault UK listed a Type 2 cable as standard equipment on the Z.E.50, and Renault's own international material describes a second domestic cable, the Flexi Charger, but UK owners report that the 3-pin lead was a paid option rather than a given, and used examples regularly change hands with neither. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable restores the missing piece: 2.3 kW when you connect it to any 13 amp plug socket, about 11 miles of range an hour, a built in Type B RCD and current adjustable from 6 to 12 amps. Overnight at a relative's house it puts roughly 75 miles back into a Z.E.50, which on a Zoe is a third of the battery.

The original 2013 to 2016 Zoe carries a 22 kWh battery certified under the older NEDC test, so there is no WLTP figure to build a range per hour on. It uses the same Type 2 inlet and the same Chameleon charger, filling in about 3 hours 15 minutes on the 32A single phase cable and about 1 hour 15 minutes at a 22 kW post. Usable capacities above are EV Database measurements and the WLTP miles are Renault UK's published maxima for each battery; Renault quoted 245 miles for the entry Play R110 at launch, so your own trim may sit a little either side. Expect fewer miles per hour in a cold snap and after a fast motorway run.

Does a Renault Zoe really charge at 22 kW on a public post?

Yes. Every UK Renault Zoe with an R90, R110 or R135 motor has a 22 kW three phase Chameleon charger, so at a 22 kW AC post with a 32A three phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable the 52 kWh Z.E.50 goes from empty to full in about 2 hours 45 minutes and gains roughly 101 miles of range per hour. That is why the three phase cable is a sound purchase on this car when it is a poor one on most other electric vehicles.

What cable should a Renault Zoe owner buy for home charging?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, in 5 or 10 metres. A UK home wallbox sits on a single phase supply and gives 7.4 kW, the Renault Zoe draws all of it through a 32A cable, and a full charge of a Z.E.50 takes about 8 hours from empty. The three phase cable would give the same 7.4 kW on that wallbox, so there is no difference at home and its extra cost only makes sense if you also use 22 kW public posts.

Is there a charging cable in the boot of a used Renault Zoe?

Not reliably. Renault UK supplied a Type 2 cable as standard with the Z.E.50, while UK owners report the 3-pin Flexi Charger was generally an optional extra, so a used Renault Zoe can arrive with both, one or neither. With production finished in 2024 every Zoe is now second hand, and the cable is often the first thing an outgoing owner keeps for the next car. Look before you assume.

Do the Z.E.40 and Z.E.50 Renault Zoe need different cables?

No. Both the 41 kWh Z.E.40 and the 52 kWh Z.E.50 Renault Zoe use a Type 2 inlet and a 22 kW Chameleon charger, so the same Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable and the same rates apply and only the charging time changes. On a 7.4 kW wallbox the Z.E.40 fills in about 6 hours 15 minutes and the Z.E.50 in about 8 hours; at a 22 kW post the times are about 2 hours and 2 hours 45 minutes.

How much range does a Renault Zoe recover in a seven hour off-peak window?

About 238 miles on the 32A single phase cable, which is effectively a full 52 kWh Z.E.50 battery, since the car adds roughly 34 miles per hour at 7.4 kW. The 16A cable manages about 119 miles in the same seven hours, so a Renault Zoe on a daily commute of any length is better served by the 32A lead. The 3-pin cable adds around 75 miles in the same window.

Will a 5 metre charging cable reach a Renault Zoe's charge port?

Usually, because the Renault Zoe's charge port is in the centre of the front bumper behind the diamond badge and the car is only 4.09 metres long, so a Zoe driven nose first towards a wallbox on the house wall finishes with the socket almost touching the unit. Reverse onto the drive and the socket faces the road, at the far end of a four metre car, and 10 metres is the safe length. For a kerbside post or a wallbox fitted on a garage set back from the house, 15 and 20 metres are available in the 32A single phase cable.

Compatibility

The Zoe is the one car on this site where a three-phase cable genuinely earns its money. Every UK Zoe ever sold takes at least 22 kW AC, which is three times what most electric cars manage, and the early R210, Q210 and Q90 go to 43 kW. Renault did this by using the motor windings as the charger rather than fitting a separate box, which is why the figures are so far above the norm. Two honest caveats. A UK home supply is single phase, so at home any Zoe charges at 7.4 kW; the 22 and 43 kW only appear on three-phase public posts. And the letter in the badge matters more than the trim: a Q90 and an R90 look identical and charge very differently. Check the motor code on your V5.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
