Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The MG4 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. This cable carries the fastest version of the car at full speed and works on any three-phase charge point you meet.

Only charging at home? A British house is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW whatever cable is plugged into it. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) gives you all of that for less money.

Every MG4 sold in the UK charges through a Type 2 inlet, so an MG4 charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable from the 2022 SE Standard Range to the XPower performance model, the 2026 Premium and the new MG4 EV Urban. All of them draw about 7 kW on a single phase, some accept 11 kW on three phase, and the 32A single phase cable is the right buy for the whole range at home. Which MG4s take 11 kW is the awkward part, because MG has moved the three phase charger around the range. From 2022 to 2025 it sat in the 64 kWh and 77 kWh cars, the SE Long Range, Trophy Long Range and Trophy Extended Range, and not in the 51 kWh SE or the XPower. The February 2026 update took it out of the big MG4 altogether, so the Premium Long Range, Premium Extended Range and current XPower are 7 kW cars, while the cheapest MG4, the MG4 EV Urban, arrived with 11 kW on every version. Read the badge and year before paying for three phase.

MG MG4 charging cable: the badge and the year settle the three phase question

Full speed at home on every MG4: the 32A single phase cable. Labelled 32amp (7.2kW), it carries 7.4 kW, more than the 7 kW any MG4 draws from one phase, so every version charges at its full home speed on it. A 64 kWh Long Range fills from empty in about 10 hours, gaining roughly 32 miles an hour; a 77 kWh Extended Range takes about 12 hours, a 51 kWh SE 8 hours 15 minutes. Pays on some MG4s, and only away from home: the 32A three phase cable. Its menu label is 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), and it is the priciest of the four options, worth it for a 2022 to 2025 SE Long Range, Trophy Long Range or Trophy Extended Range, or a 2026 MG4 EV Urban, with a three phase supply at a workplace charge point: the 64 kWh car then charges at 11 kW and finishes in 6 hours 15 minutes instead of 10. On a driveway it gives 7 kW, like the single phase lead. On a 51 kWh SE, an XPower or any 2026 Premium it can never deliver more than 7 kW anywhere, because those cars have nowhere to put three phase power. Too slow for any MG4 battery: the 16A cable. Labelled 16amp (3.6kW), at 3.7 kW it stretches the 64 kWh Long Range to 18 hours 45 minutes and puts back about 17 miles an hour, so a seven hour off peak window returns roughly 119 miles against 224 on the 32A cable. Any of the three also serves at untethered public chargers, the Type 2 posts with no tethered lead; rapid chargers carry their own.

Cable lengths come down to the socket and how you park. The 2022 on MG4 has its charge flap on the rear left corner, passenger side, and is 4.29 metres long. Reverse onto the drive with the home charger on that side and 5 metres is plenty. Drive in nose first, or have the charger on the driver's side, and the cable must run past the whole car and round the tail, so 10 metres is the length to order. The MG4 EV Urban is 4.4 metres long and EV Database, our only source for it, places its port on the front left wing, so measure your own car; a front wing socket usually means nose in works with 5 metres and reversing in wants 10. The 15 and 20 metre cables, 32A single phase only, suit a shared courtyard, a detached garage or a street frontage.

Check the boot before assuming you own a wallbox lead. UK MG4 owners report new cars arriving with a 3 pin granny cable and no Type 2 to Type 2 cable, some dealers and the odd lease company adding a Type 2 lead to the deal, and a spell in 2023 when the reverse happened. MG publishes nothing on the point, and the Type 2 cable it does supply is single phase. The MG4 EV Urban, on sale since February 2026, is not tabled because its figures rest on fewer sources. EV Database gives 52.8 kWh usable and 258 miles WLTP for the 54 kWh Long Range, 41.9 kWh usable and 201 miles for the 43 kWh Standard Range, and 11 kW AC on both, which the RAC's road test repeats. At 7 kW the Long Range Urban takes about 8 hours 30 minutes from empty and the Standard Range 6 hours 45 minutes, gaining about 34 miles an hour; at 11 kW on a three phase post those fall to 5 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours 15 minutes. The single phase figure of 7 kW is MG's own; EV Database lists 6.6 kW and owners read 6.6 to 6.9 kW on a wallbox display, so a full charge may run twenty minutes longer than shown. Battery capacities and WLTP miles are MG UK's published figures for each pack. A frozen windscreen in the morning and a fast run up the A1 will both knock miles off the range column.

Which MG4 versions have the 11 kW three phase charger?

The 2022 to 2025 MG4 SE Long Range, Trophy Long Range and Trophy Extended Range, and every version of the 2026 MG4 EV Urban, accept 11 kW on three phase AC. The 51 kWh SE Standard Range, the XPower and the 2026 MG4 Premium Long Range and Premium Extended Range carry a single phase charger of about 7 kW, whatever the model year. MG's brochures mostly quote the 7 kW home figure alone, which is why the 11 kW is so often missed, but owners of 64 kWh and 77 kWh Long Range cars measure 9.5 to 10.5 kW at three phase posts. If you are unsure, look inside the Type 2 inlet: an 11 kW MG4 has metal pins in the two lower L2 and L3 positions, a 7 kW car has empty holes there.

Is the 32A single phase cable enough for an 11 kW MG4 at home?

Yes. An 11 kW MG4 draws about 7 kW from a single phase, which is all most UK homes can supply, and the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable carries 7.4 kW, so it hands the car everything the supply can give. A 64 kWh MG4 Trophy Long Range charges from empty in about 10 hours on it and a 77 kWh Trophy Extended Range in about 12. The 11 kW figure only comes into play at a three phase charge point, and there the three phase cable is the one to plug in.

Does a 22kW cable make any difference to an MG4 SE Standard Range or XPower?

None at all. An MG4 SE Standard Range, an MG4 XPower and any 2026 MG4 Premium have a single phase onboard charger, so the 32A three phase cable delivers about 7 kW into them on a driveway and the same 7 kW at a three phase post, exactly matching the cheaper single phase cable. The extra two live pins in the cable have nothing to feed on those cars. The three phase lead is only worth paying for on the 11 kW MG4s, and even then only where three phases reach the socket.

How much range does an MG4 put back in one night on a home charger?

Roughly 224 miles on a 64 kWh MG4 Long Range across a seven hour off peak window at 7 kW, about 210 miles on a 77 kWh Extended Range or a 51 kWh SE, and about 238 miles on a 54 kWh MG4 EV Urban, all on the 32A single phase cable. Those seven hours put around 43 kWh into the battery, so an SE Standard Range is full from almost any starting point, a Long Range is full from about a quarter and an Extended Range from about 40 percent. On the 16A cable the same window returns 112 to 126 miles.

Is the cable MG puts in the boot of a new MG4 a Type 2 lead?

Usually not, going by UK owner reports, since MG UK publishes no statement on what comes with an MG4. Most new MG4s arrive with a 3 pin granny cable only, some dealers add a Type 2 to Type 2 cable as part of the deal, and for a few months in 2023 cars came with a Type 2 lead instead because granny cables were scarce. The MG Type 2 cable, where supplied, is single phase. A used MG4 may have neither, so check before the home charger is fitted.

Does an MG4 with the socket on the rear corner need a 5 metre or a 10 metre cable?

A 5 metre cable suits an MG4 reversed onto a drive with the wallbox on the passenger side, near the rear left charge flap of a car 4.29 metres long. A 10 metre cable is the one for nose in parking, a wallbox on the driver's side, or a kerbside charge, because the lead then has to travel past the full length of the hatchback and round the back. The MG4 EV Urban's socket sits on the front left wing according to EV Database, which reverses that advice: nose in is the short run and reversing in is the long one.

Compatibility

This is the one MG4 fact worth reading properly, because most spec websites get it wrong and it costs owners money. The entry SE Standard Range has a 6.6 kW single-phase charger. Every other MG4, the SE Long Range, Trophy, Extended Range and XPOWER, has an 11 kW three-phase charger. EV Database lists 6.6 kW for all of them, which is incorrect, and owners on the MG forums have measured Long Range cars pulling around 10 kW on three phase. Why it matters: if you have a Long Range or Trophy and you plug a single-phase cable into a 22 kW three-phase public post, you get roughly a third of the power available to you. At home on a single-phase supply every MG4 charges at around 7 kW, so a standard 32A cable is right for the driveway.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
