Product Description

Check the socket on your van before you order, because two completely unrelated electric Berlingos have worn the badge and they take different cables. The cables listed on this page are Type 1 to Type 2, which is what the 2013 to 2019 Berlingo Electric uses.

That earlier van was built on Mitsubishi-derived running gear. It carries a 22.5 kWh pack, roughly 20.5 kWh of it usable, a CHAdeMO port for rapid charging, and on the evidence available a five pin Type 1 AC inlet. We will be straight with you: sources are not unanimous on the connector, so open the flap and count the pins. Five in a round housing means Type 1 and these cables. Seven pins with a flat top edge means Type 2, and you need a different lead. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering rather than guessing.

The onboard charger on that van is small, around 3.3 kW, so a full refill from empty takes about seven hours whichever Type 1 cable you plug in. We recommend the 32A version anyway. It is the heavier cable, it carries the same current all day without complaint, and it stays useful if the van is ever replaced by something with a bigger charger. The 16A cable is not wrong, and it finishes at the same time on this van, because the limit is the vehicle and not the lead.

A 3 pin cable at 2.3 kW takes about ten hours for the same pack. That is a long night, so treat it as a backup for sites without a charge point rather than your everyday method.

The 2021 onwards e-Berlingo is a different vehicle entirely. It uses Type 2, charges at 7.4 kW as standard with 11 kW offered as an option, has CCS rather than CHAdeMO, and holds 46.3 kWh usable, rising to 50 kWh usable on the March 2024 facelift. None of the cables on this page will fit it. Those vans need a Type 2 to Type 2 32A cable. The 11 kW option only matters at a three phase charge point, since a UK home supply is single phase and caps you at 7.4 kW regardless.

Passenger and van bodies charge identically. Only the seats and trim differ. Petrol and diesel Berlingo and Berlingo Multispace models have no charging port at all, and there was never a plug-in hybrid version of the Multispace.

Which cable does the Citroen Berlingo Electric need?

A Type 1 to Type 2 cable, and we suggest the 32A version. The 2013 to 2019 van charges at about 3.3 kW, so roughly seven hours fills its 20.5 kWh of usable capacity. Count the pins on your inlet first: five means Type 1 and these cables are right for you.

Will these cables fit the 2021 e-Berlingo?

No. The e-Berlingo launched in late 2021 uses a seven pin Type 2 inlet, charges at 7.4 kW as standard and holds 46.3 kWh usable, or 50 kWh from the March 2024 facelift. It needs a Type 2 to Type 2 32A cable instead. Nothing listed on this page will physically connect to it.

Is the 32A cable faster than the 16A?

Not on the 2013 to 2019 van. Its onboard charger tops out near 3.3 kW, below what even a 16A cable can supply, so both finish in about seven hours. We still point buyers at the 32A lead because it is the more robust cable and stays useful if a faster charging vehicle follows.

Is the 11 kW option worth having?

Only away from home. The 11 kW figure quoted for the e-Berlingo is a three phase rating, and British houses are supplied single phase, which holds you to 7.4 kW on the drive. You would see the benefit at a three phase public post, using a three phase cable, and nowhere else.

Does the diesel Berlingo Multispace plug in?

No. Petrol and diesel Berlingo and Berlingo Multispace models have no charging port anywhere on the vehicle, and Citroen never sold a plug-in hybrid Multispace. If your van has a fuel filler and no charge flap, it takes no cable at all. Only the Berlingo Electric and the e-Berlingo charge.

Do I need 5m or 10m for a van?

Five metres works when the Berlingo parks close to the charge point with the front end facing it. Ten metres is the safer choice for yard parking, a shared post, or a van reversed up to a wall. Vans are long, so measure from the inlet rather than from the bumper.

Two very different electric Berlingos exist and they take different cables. For charging purposes the passenger e-Berlingo and the e-Berlingo van are identical; only the seats and trim differ. There was never a plug-in Berlingo Multispace.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
