Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Citroën C5 Aircross accepts up to 7.4 kW on AC. This cable hands over every watt of it. Domestic supply is single phase in any case, so no three-phase lead will make the car charge faster.

Every Citroen C5 Aircross that plugs in, the 2020 to 2025 Hybrid 225, the 2025 onwards Plug-in Hybrid 195 (relabelled 225 in 2026) and the electric e-C5 Aircross, has a Type 2 inlet and accepts at least 7.4 kW on single phase AC, so one 32A Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable is the right buy for the whole badge, plug-in hybrid or electric car. Plugged into a UK home charger, all of them draw 7.4 kW. Citroen UK's 2020 launch material gave the Hybrid 225 a 7 kW charger as standard and a sub two hour fill on a 32A wallbox, the 2025 Plug-in Hybrid has a 7.4 kW single phase charger as standard, and the e-C5 Aircross has an 11 kW three phase unit. On AC the speed is set by the vehicle's onboard charger, never by the cable. What the badge and the year change is the battery capacity behind the socket: 13.2 or 14.2 kWh in the first plug-in, 17.8 kWh usable in the new one, 73 or 97 kWh in the electric car. That is what decides whether the cheaper leads are enough, and whether a three phase cable ever earns its keep. The Hybrid 136 of 2023 to 2025 and the Hybrid 145 of 2025 onwards are 48 volt mild hybrids with no charging socket at all.

Which Citroen C5 Aircross charging cable to buy

Full speed at home on every plug-in C5 Aircross: the 32A single phase cable. It is listed in our menu as 32amp (7.2kW) and carries 7.4 kW, which is the whole of a 14.2 kWh Hybrid 225 in 2 hours 15 minutes, a 17.8 kWh Plug-in Hybrid in 2 hours 45 minutes, and a 73 kWh e-C5 Aircross in 11 hours 15 minutes. Works, but no faster on the two plug-in hybrids: the 32A three phase cable. Their chargers are single phase units, so there is nothing for the second and third phases to feed. On the e-C5 Aircross it does have a use, at a workplace or public post wired for three phase, where the car takes 11 kW and 73 kWh fills in 7 hours 30 minutes instead of 11 hours 15. At a house it is a 7.4 kW cable that cost more. Slower, and whether that matters depends on the badge: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it runs at 3.7 kW. On the Hybrid 225 that is 4 hours 15 minutes rather than 2 hours 15, which any night absorbs. On a 73 kWh e-C5 Aircross it is 22 hours 15 minutes, and a seven hour off-peak window puts back about 115 miles instead of about 229, so the electric car outgrows it.

Length follows the charge port, which on both generations sits on the rear left corner, above the wheel and opposite the fuel filler on the hybrids. The 2020 to 2025 car is 4.50 metres long, the new one 4.65 metres. A wallbox on the near side wall with the car reversed in is a 5 metre job. Drive in forwards and the socket ends up at the far end of the car from the wallbox, at which point 10 metres is the working minimum, and it is the length to pick for a shared drive or a kerbside post where the car is parked either way round. 15 and 20 metres suit a garage that is not the one the car sleeps in, or a charger at the top of a long drive. All four lengths are in stock, and all four are the same cable at the same speed; the price difference is copper.

Check the boot before assuming a backup lead is in there. Citroen's UK charging page separates the two charging modes: a single phase Mode 3 Type 2 cable comes with the car, and the Mode 2 domestic three pin cable is sold as an accessory, so a used C5 Aircross generally arrives with one lead, and it is not the one for a wall socket. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable fills that gap, and is what most owners mean by a granny cable: 2.3 kW from a standard 13 amp wall socket, a Type B RCD in the control box, current adjustable from 6 to 12 amps, IP67 sealed. On the plug-in hybrids it is a genuine overnight charger, 7 hours for a 14.2 kWh Hybrid 225 and 8 hours 45 minutes for the 17.8 kWh Plug-in Hybrid, so a granny visit with no wallbox still starts the next day on electric. On the e-C5 Aircross it adds about 10 miles an hour and needs 35 hours 45 minutes from empty, which makes it a get you home lead and nothing more.

Both cables here are compatible with any Type 2 electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid vehicle, not only the C5 Aircross, and both carry a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. The Type 2 to Type 2 is manufactured to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, sealed to IP55 and rated for -30C to +50C. The Type 2 to 3-Pin is built to IEC 62752, CE marked, sealed to IP67 and rated for -30C to +60C. The e-C5 Aircross Long Range 230hp, 97 kWh usable and up to 422 miles WLTP, keeps the same 11 kW charger, so it adds about 32 miles an hour at 7.4 kW and takes 14 hours 45 minutes from empty on the 32A cable, 10 hours at an 11 kW three phase post, 29 hours 30 minutes on the 16A lead and 47 hours 45 minutes on the 3-pin. Citroen does not publish a usable figure for the first Hybrid 225, so its times use the gross capacity and will run a few minutes short of the real thing. A frosted windscreen and a motorway commute both pull the miles per hour figure down.

Which C5 Aircross models can take a charging cable?

Three of them: the Hybrid 225 plug-in sold from 2020 to 2025, the Plug-in Hybrid 195 or 225 sold from 2025, and the electric e-C5 Aircross. All three have a Type 2 socket on the rear left of the car. The C5 Aircross Hybrid 136, the Hybrid 145, and every PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel have no socket, so no charging cable will connect, however the badge reads.

What is the best charging cable for a Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid 225?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, because the Hybrid 225 has a 7.4 kW single phase charger and that cable feeds it in full, filling the 14.2 kWh battery in about 2 hours 15 minutes. The 16A cable also works and finishes in about 4 hours 15 minutes, which is still well inside a night, so on this car it is a saving rather than a mistake. The three phase cable gives the Hybrid 225 nothing the 32A does not.

Does the e-C5 Aircross charge faster with a 22kW three phase cable?

Only at a three phase charge point. The e-C5 Aircross has an 11 kW three phase onboard charger, so at a workplace or public post with three phase power it takes 11 kW and refills 73 kWh in 7 hours 30 minutes rather than 11 hours 15 minutes. On a domestic single phase wallbox the car is held to 7.4 kW whichever cable is plugged in, and the cheaper 32A single phase lead carries that in full. The same 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the one to carry for public charging points with an untethered Type 2 socket; DC rapid charging stations come with their lead tethered, so nothing needs to leave the boot for those.

How much range does a C5 Aircross get back in a seven hour off-peak window?

A full battery on either plug-in hybrid, since the Hybrid 225 needs about 2 hours 15 minutes and the 17.8 kWh Plug-in Hybrid about 2 hours 45 minutes at 7.4 kW. The 73 kWh e-C5 Aircross adds roughly 33 miles for each hour on a 7.4 kW home EV charger, so a seven hour window puts back about 229 miles, or about 225 miles on the 97 kWh Long Range. On the 16A cable the electric car gets about 115 miles in the same window.

Did my Citroen C5 Aircross come with a charging cable?

With a Type 2 cable, in most cases. Citroen's UK charging page lists a single phase Mode 3 Type 2 cable as standard equipment and the domestic three pin cable as an accessory, and Citroen UK's 2020 launch notes for the Hybrid 225 said the same. A used C5 Aircross may have lost even that. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable is the one Citroen did not include, and on a 14.2 kWh Hybrid 225 it delivers a full charge in about 7 hours from an ordinary socket.

Is a 5 metre cable long enough for a C5 Aircross?

Yes when the car reverses onto a drive and the wallbox is on the same side as the rear left charge port. The C5 Aircross is 4.50 metres long in 2020 to 2025 form and 4.65 metres in the new car, so parking nose in puts the socket a full car length away from a wallbox at the house wall, and 10 metres is the safer buy. A shared car park, a garage across the yard or a charge point at the far end of a long drive call for 15 or 20 metres.

Compatibility

Four different C5 Aircrosses have been sold here and only three of them can be charged. The Hybrid 225 of 2020 to 2024 is a plug-in with a Type 2 socket. The new-generation Hybrid 145, launched with the 2025 car, is a 48V mild hybrid with no charging port at all, and it is the version most likely to catch you out because the name looks similar. The e-C5 Aircross from 2025 is the full electric car, and the new Plug-in Hybrid 195 is a proper plug-in with a 21 kWh battery. One honest caveat on the old Hybrid 225: Citroen's launch material quoted a 7.4 kW charger, but the mechanically identical Peugeot 3008 was sold with 3.7 kW as standard and 7.4 kW as an option, so some UK cars may have the slower unit. A 32A cable covers you either way.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
