Which cable a Nissan needs depends on its age, and the Leaf is where the line falls. The 2011 to 2017 first generation Leaf carries a five pin Type 1 inlet, and so does every e-NV200 for the whole of its life from 2014 to 2022, including the 40 kWh facelift. Those vehicles need a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Every Leaf sold here since 2018 uses Type 2, from the 40 kWh car and the 62 kWh Leaf e+ to the third generation of 2026, as do the Ariya and the electric Micra of 2026, all of which take a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
Nissan kept the five pin round connector on the e-NV200 long after most of the market had moved on, which is why a lead borrowed from a newer car will not fit an older van. Body style makes no difference: Van, Combi, Evalia and camper conversions all share the same Type 1 inlet.

The 2018 to 2024 Leaf carries a 6.6kW charger and the 2026 car an 11kW one, which settles at 7.4kW on a wallbox. Every Ariya reaches 7.4kW on a driveway, whether it is a 63 kWh car with the standard 7.4kW charger or an 87 kWh car with the 22kW unit fitted. The Micra takes 11kW on AC on every grade and behaves the same way at home. On the Type 1 side, a first generation Leaf with the optional 6.6kW charger suits the 32A lead, while the e-NV200 is capped by Type 1 itself at 7.4kW because no three phase Type 1 cable exists.
SE is a trim level on the diesel NV200, not an electric model. An NV200 SE is a diesel panel van with no battery and no charging port, and the same goes for the Acenta, the Visia and the diesel Combi. Nissan sold the electric version as a separate model called the e-NV200, which you can spot by the charging flap set into the middle of the nose where the grille badge sits on the diesel.
Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, so the driver brings the lead and the Type 2 to Type 2 cable lives in the boot as well as on the driveway. A 5m cable reaches most bays and a wallbox on the same side as the flap, and 10m covers shared parking. Type 2 to Type 2 and Type 1 to Type 2 leads are sealed to IP55 and rated from -30C to +50C, the 3 Pin lead is IP67 and rated from -30C to +60C, and every cable is built to IEC 62196 with CE certification.

Does my Nissan need a Type 1 or a Type 2 cable?
The year decides it. A 2011 to 2017 first generation Leaf and every e-NV200 built between 2014 and 2022 use a five pin Type 1 inlet and need a Type 1 to Type 2 lead. Every Leaf from 2018 onwards, including the 40 kWh car, the 62 kWh Leaf e+ and the third generation from 2026, uses a seven pin Type 2 inlet, as do the Ariya and the electric Micra, so those take a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
Why will my Type 2 cable not fit my e-NV200?
Because the socket on the van is Type 1, with five pins in a round housing, and no adaptor changes that. Nissan kept Type 1 on this model for its entire life, including the 40 kWh facelift, by which point the Leaf had already switched to Type 2. Van, Combi, Evalia and camper conversions such as the Wild Van and Dalbury all use the same inlet, so body style makes no difference.

My Ariya has the 22kW onboard charger. Do I need a 22kW cable?
Not for home charging. Twenty two kilowatts is a three phase rating and homes in Britain are wired single phase, so every Ariya settles at 7.4kW on a driveway and a 32A single phase cable passes all of it. The 22kW three phase lead only shows its value at a genuine three phase post. Both the 63 kWh cars and the 87 kWh cars behave identically at home.
Which cable suits a first generation Leaf?
A Type 1 to Type 2 lead, and the amperage depends on the charger. A 2011 to 2017 Leaf fitted with the optional 6.6kW charger suits the 32A version, which lets it draw everything it can take. Cars with the smaller standard charger are covered by the 16A lead. Type 1 is single phase by design, so 7.4kW is its hard ceiling and no three phase Type 1 cable has ever been made.
Do I need to bring my own cable to a public charger?
For AC charging, usually yes. Most public AC posts in the UK are untethered, meaning no lead is fixed to the unit and the driver supplies one. That is why the Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the lead to keep in the boot as well as the one you use at home. Rapid DC chargers are the exception, because they are tethered and make the connection with their own fixed lead.
How are the cables sealed and certified?
