Product Description

A Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2, but which one to buy turns entirely on the year, because Volkswagen tripled the AC rate in 2024. The 2021 to 2024 car takes 3.6 kW. The 2024 on car takes 11 kW. Work out which is on your driveway before spending anything.

Both generations use a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and neither shares that inlet with the petrol, diesel or eTSI mild-hybrid Tiguans, which have no charging socket.

First job: work out which Tiguan eHybrid you have

The registration year settles it. A Tiguan eHybrid registered up to 2024 is the older car: 245PS only, 10.4 kWh per Volkswagen UK, and around 30 miles of electric range. From late 2024 the current car arrived with 25.7 kWh, a choice of 204PS or 272PS, and up to 77 miles. The dashboard gives it away too. A full battery showing a range figure in the seventies is the new one. Thirty means the old one.

If you have the newer car, buy the 32A single-phase Type 2 cable. Volkswagen quotes 11 kW for it, and states plainly that this is an increase from 3.6 kW, but 11 kW is a three-phase number. British houses are wired with a single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW at home and the 32A single-phase cable delivers all of it. That is about 3 hours from empty, against 6 hours on a 16A cable. The 32A three-phase version is only worth the money behind a real three-phase supply, where the car takes its full 11 kW and finishes in roughly 2 hours.

If you have the older car, spend less. At 3.6 kW the 2021 to 2024 Tiguan eHybrid cannot draw more current than a 16A cable already provides, so a 32A cable fills it in exactly the same 3 hours 15 minutes and the extra outlay buys nothing whatsoever. Buy the 16A. We would rather say that than sell you capacity your car is incapable of using.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable makes sense as a second cable on either generation. It runs at 2.3 kW, filling the older Tiguan eHybrid in about 5 hours and the newer one in about 9 hours 45 minutes, so both recover during a normal night from a household socket. It is IP67 sealed, so trailing it out of a garage door in the wet is fine, and it is what turns a weekend at a cottage with no charge point into a non-event.

Both generations put the charging socket in the front nearside wing, ahead of the door and behind the front wheel arch, not behind the badge on the grille as several rivals do. That matters for length. Nose into a driveway with the wallbox on the house wall and the flap ends up close to it, so 5m does the job. Reverse in, or take the far side of a shared bay, and the socket is suddenly at the far end of a 4.5m SUV, which is 10m territory.

Every Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid needs a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, but the amperage depends on the generation. The 2024 on car should have the 32A single-phase cable, because it accepts 7.4 kW at home. The 2021 to 2024 car is limited to 3.6 kW and only needs the cheaper 16A version.

Why does my older Tiguan eHybrid charge so much slower?

Because the 2021 to 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, less than a third of the 11 kW fitted to the 2024 on car. Volkswagen describes the new model as an increase from 3.6 kW for exactly that reason. Nothing you plug into the older car gets past its 3.6 kW limit: not a thicker cable, not a more powerful wallbox.

Is a 32A cable worth buying for a 2022 Tiguan eHybrid?

No. A 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid charges at 3.6 kW, which a 16A cable already supplies in full, so the 32A cable finishes at the same 3 hours 15 minutes and the extra spend achieves precisely nothing. Buy the 16A cable and put the difference towards a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable for trips away.

Would a three-phase cable speed up a new Tiguan eHybrid?

Only on a three-phase supply. The 2024 on Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid is rated at 11 kW across three phases, and a UK house is fed by one phase, so at home it charges at 7.4 kW whichever 32A cable is plugged in. Where three phases genuinely exist, usually a workplace, the car takes the full 11 kW and fills in about 2 hours instead of 3.

The generation decides the cable here, which is unusual. A 2021 to 2024 Tiguan eHybrid accepts only 3.6 kW, and a 16A cable already supplies that in full, so paying for 32A gains nothing at all on that car. The 2024 on Tiguan eHybrid is a different proposition: Volkswagen rates it at 11 kW, and because that is a three-phase figure it settles at 7.4 kW on a single-phase British home supply, which is exactly what the 32A single-phase cable provides.     A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)
