Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Volkswagen Golf GTE accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The Mk7 and early Mk8 are 3.6 kW and the 2024 facelift is 11 kW. That is what the 22 kW cable is built for, and a workplace or commercial three-phase supply is where it pays the difference back.

Never charge anywhere but home? Then the extra phases have nothing to connect to. A domestic wallbox gives 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers exactly that.

Every Volkswagen Golf GTE sold in the UK since 2015, and the Golf eHybrid that joined it in 2021, charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead it needs is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. What changed across the three generations is the charger behind that inlet: 3.6 kW on the Mk7 from 2015 to 2020 and on the Mk8 from 2020 to 2024, then 11 kW on the Mk8.5 that arrived in 2024, which draws 7.4 kW from a UK home wallbox. So the year on the V5C decides the amperage. Two of the three Golf GTEs are already at full speed on our cheapest Type 2 lead, and only the newest, carrying a battery nearly twice the size, has anything to gain from a 32A cable. A Golf GTI, GTD, TSI, eTSI or R has no charging flap and needs no cable. The GTE is a PHEV, a plug-in hybrid rather than an electric car or a self charging hybrid: the petrol engine and electric motor can hold the battery level on the move, but only a cable puts the full electric range back into a VW Golf GTE.

Which Volkswagen Golf GTE charging cable to buy

Full speed on a 2015 to 2024 Golf GTE: the 16A cable. Our menu calls it 16amp (3.6kW), and 3.6 kW is precisely what the Mk7 and Mk8 onboard charger will accept, so it fills the 10.6 kWh Mk8 pack in 3 hours 15 minutes and the 8.7 kWh Mk7 in 2 hours 45 minutes from any wallbox. Full speed on a 2024 on Golf GTE or eHybrid: the 32A single phase cable, listed as 32amp (7.2kW). It hands the Mk8.5 the 7.4 kW a single phase house can pass, and the 19.7 kWh battery is full in 3 hours rather than the 6 the 16A lead would need. Works, but no faster: the 32A three phase cable, on any Golf GTE plugged into a house. On a 2015 to 2024 car it charges at 3.6 kW like every other Type 2 lead, and on the Mk8.5 at home it charges at 7.4 kW like the single phase 32A, because the additional conductors only carry current when the socket itself is fed by three phases. At a workplace bay or a 22 kW public post with three live phases, the Mk8.5 pulls its full 11 kW and finishes in 2 hours. That is the one Golf and the one location where the dearer lead pays.

The charging port moved between generations, and for cable length that matters more than the car, which stays close to 4.28 metres long throughout. On the Mk7 the socket hides behind the VW badge in the front grille, so a nose in park against a wallbox on the house wall needs almost no cable and 5 metres is generous; reverse in and the lead runs the whole length of the car, which is 10 metre territory. On the Mk8 and Mk8.5 the socket sits in the front wing on the passenger side, just above the nearside wheel. Nose in with the box on that side, 5 metres; nose in with the box on the driver's side, or any reverse park, and 10 metres is the safe order. The 15 metre and 20 metre lengths cover a garage set back from the house or a street space, and on this product both come as 32A single phase, a rating every generation accepts.

What is already in the boot depends on age. When the Mk8 eHybrid launched in 2021 Volkswagen UK listed a 10A domestic charging cable as standard, and UK reviewers of the Mk8 GTE reported both a Type 2 lead and a three pin cable supplied. Volkswagen's current Golf pages do not spell out what ships with the Mk8.5, and a used GTE of any age often arrives with one lead or none. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, which the menu shows as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), is the lead most owners call a granny charger, and on the first two generations it is a real charger rather than a backup: 2.3 kW refills a Mk7 in 4 hours 15 minutes and a Mk8 in 5 hours 15 minutes, so either car will fully charge from an ordinary socket in a normal night with no wallbox at all. On the 19.7 kWh Mk8.5 the same lead needs 9 hours 45 minutes, which still fits an evening to morning plug in, though only just. Its Type B RCD and adjustable current are there for the older ring mains it tends to meet.

The larger Volkswagen plug-in that followed the same 3.6 kW to 11 kW path, the Passat, has its own page at Volkswagen Passat GTE charging cable, and every Volkswagen lead we make is collected in Volkswagen EV charging cables. On construction: the Type 2 to Type 2 is sealed to IP55, rated from -30C to +50C, built to IEC 62196-2 and both CE marked. The Type 2 to 3-Pin is CE marked and built to IEC 62752, with IP67 sealing and a -30C to +60C working range. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty covers both, UK delivery is free and next working day, and a lead that turns out to be the wrong length goes back free inside 30 days.

The Mk8.5 eHybrid is rated at up to 88 miles on the same 19.7 kWh, so its miles per hour run about three above the GTE row, and the 44 mile Mk8 eHybrid sits one above its GTE. Volkswagen quotes the Mk7 pack at 8.7 kWh with no separate usable figure, so its times are worked from that gross number and are a slight overestimate. The first two generations use Volkswagen's own 3.6 kW rating, a shade under the 3.7 kW the 16A cable can carry. A cold morning or a long stretch of dual carriageway pulls every miles per hour figure down.

FAQs

Volkswagen Golf GTE Charging Cable FAQs

Which Volkswagen Golf GTE has the 11 kW charger?

Only the Mk8.5 Golf GTE and Golf eHybrid, on sale in the UK from 2024. Volkswagen's launch material for that car states 11 kW AC charging and describes it as an increase from 3.6 kW, and 3.6 kW is the maximum charging capacity of every Mk7 (2015 to 2020) and Mk8 (2020 to 2024) Golf GTE. On a home wallbox the 11 kW car draws 7.4 kW; the full 11 kW appears only on a three phase supply. The Type 2 connector is unchanged, so cable compatibility is the same on all three generations.

Is a 16A cable enough for a 2015 to 2024 Golf GTE?

Yes, and it is the right place to put the money. A Mk7 or Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTE has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, and the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable carries up to 3.7 kW, so the cable is never the bottleneck. The Mk8 takes a full charge from empty in 3 hours 15 minutes and the Mk7 in 2 hours 45 minutes, and a 32A or three phase cable plugged into either car produces exactly those same times.

Where does the 22 kW cable earn anything on a Golf GTE?

At a genuine three phase charging station with a 2024 on Golf GTE or eHybrid on the end of it, and nowhere else. There the Mk8.5 takes its full 11 kW and the 19.7 kWh battery is full in 2 hours rather than 3. On a single phase domestic wallbox the three phase cable and the single phase 32A cable both give the Mk8.5 7.4 kW, and on a 2015 to 2024 car every Type 2 cable gives 3.6 kW, so in either of those cases the extra spend buys no time. Public EV chargers rated at 22 kW are three phase, workplace units often are, and domestic ones are not.

What charging cable comes with a Volkswagen Golf GTE?

It depends on the year and on the previous owner. Volkswagen UK listed a 10A domestic cable as standard when the Mk8 Golf eHybrid launched in 2021, and UK reviews of the Mk8 Golf GTE describe both a Type 2 lead and a three pin cable in the boot. Volkswagen's current UK pages do not state what ships with the Mk8.5. On a used Golf GTE of any age look under the boot floor before assuming, because the Type 2 lead is the item most often kept back or lost.

How long a cable does a Golf GTE need with the socket in the front wing?

Five metres if a Mk8 or Mk8.5 Volkswagen Golf GTE parks nose in with the wallbox on the passenger side, because the flap sits above the nearside front wheel within a metre or two of the box. Ten metres if the box is on the driver's side, if the car reverses in, or if it charges at a kerbside post, since the lead then crosses the full 4.28 metre car or the width of the drive. The Mk7, with its socket behind the front badge, is the easiest of the three: nose in, almost any length reaches; reversed in, order 10 metres.

Can a Golf GTE charge overnight from a normal three pin socket?

Yes, on every generation. The Type 2 to 3-Pin cable draws 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket, which refills a Mk7 Volkswagen Golf GTE in 4 hours 15 minutes and a Mk8 in 5 hours 15 minutes, both comfortably inside a night. The Mk8.5, with 19.7 kWh, needs 9 hours 45 minutes, so a 10pm plug in is full by 8am but not much before. For the two older cars that makes the three pin lead a workable everyday charger where no wallbox exists, not an emergency item. Plan on roughly 8 to 9 miles of range per hour from a three pin socket on any generation, less in low temperatures.

Compatibility

Only a GTE or eHybrid Golf plugs in. A TSI, eTSI, TDI, GTI, GTD or Golf R has no charging port. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

Check your year. The 2024 facelift more than tripled the charging speed, from 3.6 kW to 11 kW, and nearly doubled the battery. Same GTE badge, very different car.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
