Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m)

The Volkswagen Passat GTE accepts up to 3.6 kW on AC. The 16A cable delivers that in full, so it is all the car needs and the cheapest lead that does the job properly. A 32A or three-phase cable would cost more and charge no faster.

Every plug-in hybrid Volkswagen Passat uses the same Type 2 inlet, so the Volkswagen Passat GTE charging cable question is one of amperage, not connector: a Type 2 to Type 2 lead fits the GTE and the eHybrid estate that replaced it in 2024. Every Passat GTE built between 2015 and 2023 has a 3.6 kW onboard charger; the 2024 Passat eHybrid has an 11 kW one, and on a British home wallbox it settles at 7.4 kW. For anyone stepping out of a B8 GTE into the new estate, two things flipped at once. Volkswagen UK's October 2019 press pack lists two cables as standard on the GTE, a 16 amp Mode 3 lead and a 10 amp mains lead, and at 3.6 kW the cheaper one was already all the car could use. On the eHybrid the Type 2 lead moves to the options list and the charger is three times quicker, so for the first time on a Passat the cable decides the speed. Only the GTE and the eHybrid have a charging flap: a Passat TSI, eTSI or TDI takes fuel and nothing here fits one.

Which Volkswagen Passat GTE charging cable to buy

Full speed on any 2015 to 2023 Passat GTE: the 16A cable. Under our 16amp (3.6kW) label, it carries the exact ceiling a GTE's onboard charger imposes, so the 9.9 kWh pack of a 2015 to 2019 car is full in 3 hours and the 10.6 kWh usable pack of a 2019 on car in 3 hours 15 minutes. A 32A lead is safe on a GTE and finishes at the same minute. Full speed at home on a 2024 Passat eHybrid: the 32A single phase cable, sold under our 32amp (7.2kW) label. It delivers 7.4 kW, as much as a single phase supply will pass, worth roughly 31 miles of electric range an hour against roughly 16 on the 16A lead. On a Passat plugged in twice a day, once overnight and once while it stands still in the middle of it, that hourly figure decides more than empty to full time does. Works, but no faster at home: the 32A three phase cable. A domestic supply carries one live phase and no cable can invent the other two, so on a driveway it leaves an eHybrid at 7.4 kW and a GTE at 3.6 kW, just like the cheaper ratings. Where three phases do reach the socket, at a workplace or a 22 kW public post, an eHybrid pulls all 11 kW and empty to full drops from 3 hours to 2. That is the only Passat, and the only place, the dearer lead earns its price.

Length turns on the flap, and the two Passats put it in different places. On the B8 GTE, Volkswagen fitted the charging inlet in the radiator grille, as its UK press pack describes, so a GTE nosed in at a box on the house barely uses cable and 5 metres has room over. Reverse it onto the drive and the lead travels the full 4.77 metres of the car, which is where 10 metres pays. The 2024 eHybrid moved the socket to the front left wing, the nearside on a UK car, on a body grown to 4.92 metres. If the box sits on the far side, or the Passat shares the drive and cannot always take the same spot, the run becomes the estate's length plus the drive's width, and 10 metres stops that being a fight every evening. The 15 and 20 metre options cover a detached garage or a space away from the house, both built at 32A single phase, which suits any Passat.

The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, our 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option, does more work on a Passat GTE than the phrase granny charger suggests. Drawing 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp wall socket, it takes a 9.9 kWh GTE from empty in 4 hours 45 minutes and a 10.6 kWh one in 5 hours 15, so a GTE owner with no wallbox can run on electricity from a domestic plug and still leave full. The 19.7 kWh eHybrid wants 9 hours 45 minutes, which fits a night starting at ten with nothing spare, so there it lives in the boot for hotels and family visits. Plug it directly into the socket, never through a household extension lead, which is not made to hold 10 amps for nine hours. The adjustable current and built in Type B RCD let an older circuit be dialled back to 6 amps.

The Volkswagen Golf GTE PHEV, the smaller plug-in that went through the same change of charger, is covered on our Golf GTE charging cable page, and the rest of the range sits in Volkswagen EV charging cables. Both leads work from -30C, the Type 2 to Type 2 up to +50C and the Type 2 to 3-Pin up to +60C, so a frozen Passat on a January driveway is well within range. The Type 2 to Type 2 is built to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, and sealed to IP55. On the Type 2 to 3-Pin, the portable charger standard IEC 62752 applies, the sealing is IP67 and the mark is CE. The 2 year manufacturer's warranty applies to both, UK delivery is free and lands the next working day, and a wrong length returns free within 30 days.

Volkswagen quotes 83 miles of electric range for the eHybrid 204 and 77 for the eHybrid 272, so a 272 puts back two to three miles an hour less than the rows above. The 9.9 kWh figure for the 2015 to 2019 car is a gross capacity with no published usable number, and its 31 mile range comes from the older NEDC testing regime, so both its times and its miles per hour read a little optimistically. Real world electric range on any Passat GTE runs below the official figures, and every number here drops again in low temperatures and at motorway pace.

FAQs

Volkswagen Passat GTE Charging Cable FAQs

Which Type 2 cable fits a Passat GTE, and which fits a Passat eHybrid?

Both cars take the same Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable and only the amperage differs. A 2015 to 2023 Volkswagen Passat GTE has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, so the 16A cable delivers everything the car can accept and a 32A one charges it no quicker. A 2024 on Passat eHybrid has an 11 kW charger and takes 7.4 kW from a home wallbox, so we recommend the 32A single phase cable there; a 16A lead would stretch a full charge from 3 hours to 6. Volkswagen gives the maximum charging capacity as 3.6 kW on the GTE and 11 kW on the eHybrid, so battery capacity changes the charge time rather than the rate. The connectors are identical on every plug-in hybrid Passat, which makes every Type 2 to Type 2 lead we sell compatible with the vehicle whatever its year.

Does the 2024 Volkswagen Passat eHybrid come with a charging cable?

Not as standard, in the way the old GTE did. Volkswagen UK's 2019 press pack lists two cables as standard equipment on the Passat GTE, a 16 amp Mode 3 lead and a 10 amp mains lead, whereas on the current Passat eHybrid a Type 2 charging cable appears as a cost option rather than standard kit. A used Passat of either era can turn up with a single lead, or with none, so check the boot floor of any vehicle you are buying before the wallbox goes in.

Does a 22kW three phase cable speed up a Volkswagen Passat?

Only at a three phase socket, and only on the 2024 Passat eHybrid, where the car pulls all 11 kW and the 19.7 kWh battery needs 2 hours instead of 3. A house has a single phase supply, so at home that cable hands a Passat eHybrid the same 7.4 kW as the 32A single phase lead, and hands any Passat GTE the same 3.6 kW its onboard charger allows, just under the 3.7 kW a 16A lead is capable of. Workplace bays and 22 kW public posts run on three phases; domestic wallboxes do not.

How much electric range does a Passat eHybrid add in an hour?

About 31 miles an hour from a 7.4 kW home wallbox on the 32A single phase cable, against about 16 miles an hour on the 16A cable. That gap matters on a Passat because the car is usually charged twice in a day rather than once from flat, and an hour standing still in the middle of the day, between the morning run and the evening one, is worth half the battery on the right cable and a quarter of it on the wrong one. A 2015 to 2023 Volkswagen Passat GTE adds 11 to 12 miles an hour whichever Type 2 cable is plugged in.

Can the same cable be used at a public charge point?

Yes. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable that runs from a home wallbox to a Volkswagen Passat is the same one you carry for untethered Type 2 posts at car parks, hotels and on-street bays, which covers most public AC charging here. Type 2 cables are not all identical, though: they differ in current rating and in length, and a 16A lead will still hold a Passat eHybrid to 3.7 kW even at a 22 kW post. The cable is compatible with any untethered Type 2 socket, so connecting at a car park post works as it does at home. Tethered EV chargers already have a lead fixed to them and need nothing from the boot.

What cable length suits a Passat estate on a driveway?

Five metres where the flap stops near the wallbox, which a B8 Passat GTE nosed in usually manages because its inlet sits in the radiator grille. Ten metres if the 4.92 metre eHybrid estate is reversed in, if the wallbox is on the offside while the eHybrid's socket is in the front left wing, or if the Passat shares a drive with another car and cannot always take the same spot. Order a 15 or 20 metre lead for parking that is nowhere near the house, a shared court or a garage down the garden. Choosing the length is worth settling before the charge point goes in, because where the box is set decides the length of the run.

Compatibility

Only a GTE or eHybrid Passat plugs in. A TSI, eTSI or TDI has no charging port. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

The current Passat eHybrid is Estate only in the UK: there is no new-generation Passat saloon sold here. It also charges at 11 kW, three times the rate of the old GTE.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
