Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz accepts up to 11 kW on AC. A 22 kW lead covers the quickest version built and is the one to bring to a three-phase post.

Charging on your own driveway only? Domestic supply here is single phase and caps the car at 7.4 kW. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers that in full and costs less.

Every Volkswagen ID. Buzz sold in the UK, the 2022 five seater, the 2024 long wheelbase six and seven seaters, the GTX and the Cargo van, charges through a Type 2 inlet with an 11 kW onboard charger, and a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable fits all of them. On a home wallbox the van draws 7.4 kW whichever battery it carries. Volkswagen quotes 11 kW AC across the range and EV Database lists the same 11 kW, 16 amps on each of three phases, on all three packs, so the amperage decision on this page takes one sentence: no cable buys a faster charger than the 11 kW unit fitted to every version, and most people charging at home will never see even that. The harder question is length: this is a 4.71 to 4.96 metre electric vehicle with its charging flap on the rear quarter, and a Volkswagen ID. Buzz charging cable a metre short is a nightly nuisance.

Which Volkswagen ID. Buzz charging cable to buy

Full speed at home on every version: the 32A single phase cable. It appears in our menu as 32amp (7.2kW) and carries 7.4 kW, the most an 11 kW van can draw through one phase and the most a domestic home charger puts out, so an 86 kWh long wheelbase van refills from empty in 13 hours 15 minutes and a 79 kWh short wheelbase in 12 hours. On this product it is also the only rating offered in 15 and 20 metre lengths. Works, but no faster at home: the 32A three phase cable. Think of it as a depot purchase: a fleet yard or a workplace with a three phase power supply lets the van take its full 11 kW, and there the 86 kWh pack fills in 8 hours 45 minutes and the 79 kWh in 8 hours; plug the same cable into a house and the two spare cores carry nothing, so the time is identical to the cheaper lead. Too slow for a battery this size: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the van to 3.7 kW, turning 13 hours 15 minutes into 26 hours 15 minutes on the long wheelbase and putting back about 91 miles in a seven hour off peak window against about 182. On a van this size that halving decides whether you charge on the cheap tariff or the day rate, which makes the 32A single phase cable the easy choice.

Length is the decision that actually needs thought, because a wrong choice here is a daily problem. Volkswagen puts the ID. Buzz charging socket on the right hand rear quarter panel, behind the rear wheel and on the driver's side in the UK, and the van is 4.71 metres long in short wheelbase form and 4.96 metres as a long wheelbase. Back the van in with the charger on the driver's side of the drive and the flap stops within a couple of metres of it, so 5 metres works. Drive in forwards and the socket is now at the kerb end of nearly five metres of van, diagonally opposite a wallbox mounted by the front door, and the run is the van plus the width of the drive, comfortably beyond 5 metres and usually beyond the 6 metre lead Volkswagen supplies. That is the case for 10 metres, and it is best settled before the wallbox installer arrives. Shared parking, a garage set back from the house and a Cargo that sleeps on a yard are where 15 or 20 metres earn their money.

Volkswagen's 2022 UK press pack lists a "charging cable mode 3 type 2, 32 A (6 metres)" as standard on the ID. Buzz, so people buying new should expect a wallbox lead a metre longer than our shortest one, and the reason to buy here is usually a longer run or a second cable. What Volkswagen does not supply, and UK reviewers note has to be paid for, is anything that plugs into a household socket. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, listed as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), fills that gap: 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket, about 8 miles of range an hour into a van this heavy, so a night at a holiday cottage or a relative's house is worth roughly 55 miles by morning. A full charge would take 38 hours 45 minutes on the 79 kWh battery, so it is a cable to carry rather than to depend on, and its Type B RCD and adjustable current protect a socket of unknown quality.

The SUV built on the same platform with the same 11 kW charger has its own Volkswagen ID.4 charging cable page, and every Volkswagen lead we stock is in Volkswagen EV charging cables. The Type 2 to Type 2 is sealed to IP55, so leaving it plugged into the vehicle overnight in the rain is not a concern, works from -30C to +50C, is built to IEC 62196-2 and is CE marked. The Type 2 to 3-Pin is sealed to IP67, works from -30C to +60C, is built to IEC 62752 and is CE marked. Each carries a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. Delivery is free next working day across the UK, and a wrong length can come back free within 30 days.

Volkswagen UK certifies the ID. Buzz between 251 and 300 miles depending on body and trim: the short wheelbase GTX at 251 miles and the Cargo at 277 miles both sit a mile or two an hour below the 79 kWh row, and the seven seat long wheelbase at 293 miles a mile below the 86 kWh row. Usable capacities are Volkswagen's own net figures of 77, 79 and 86 kWh, and EV Database, which lists the short wheelbase van as the ID. Buzz NWB Pro, measures the same. A loaded van, a winter morning and a motorway run will each take something off the miles per hour column.

FAQs

Volkswagen ID. Buzz Charging Cable FAQs

Is the 6 metre cable Volkswagen supplies with the ID. Buzz long enough?

For a van backed in with the charger on the driver's side, yes, because the ID. Buzz charging flap on the rear right quarter then sits within two metres of the socket. For a van driven in forwards it usually is not, because the flap finishes at the road end of a 4.71 or 4.96 metre vehicle and the cable has to reach back past the rear bumper and across the drive. That layout is why the 10 metre 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the length EV Cable Shop points most ID. Buzz owners towards, and why 15 and 20 metres exist for yards and detached garages. Check the boot of a used ID. Buzz too, or ask the dealer to confirm it is there; the factory VW lead is the item most often missing.

Do the Cargo, the 79 kWh and the 86 kWh Volkswagen ID. Buzz all charge at the same speed?

Yes. Every Volkswagen ID. Buzz, passenger or Cargo, short or long wheelbase, 77, 79 or 86 kWh, has the same 11 kW three phase onboard charger, so all of them take 7.4 kW from the single phase home charger most EV owners install and 11 kW from a three phase supply. The battery only changes the duration: 11 hours 45 minutes for the original 77 kWh van, 12 hours for a 79 kWh van and 13 hours 15 minutes for an 86 kWh long wheelbase at 7.4 kW. The same 32A single phase cable is the right buy for all of them.

Would the 22 kW three phase cable make sense for a Volkswagen ID. Buzz used as a work van?

Only if the Volkswagen ID. Buzz charges somewhere with a three phase power supply during the working week, which for a Cargo can be the case at a depot or a business unit. There it draws its full 11 kW and an 86 kWh pack is full in 8 hours 45 minutes instead of 13 hours 15 minutes. Taken home to a house it charges at exactly the 7.4 kW the 32A single phase cable delivers, and no cable of any rating can get past 11 kW because that is the limit of the van's own charger.

Can a Volkswagen ID. Buzz be charged from empty in one off peak night?

Not quite, on either Volkswagen ID. Buzz battery. On a 7.4 kW home charger a 79 kWh van needs 12 hours from empty and an 86 kWh long wheelbase 13 hours 15 minutes, so a seven hour cheap rate window puts back about 189 miles into the short wheelbase and about 182 miles into the long wheelbase rather than a full battery. Since few owners arrive home empty, that is a full charge most nights in practice. On the 16A cable the same seven hours returns about 91 miles, which is why the cheaper 16A cable is the wrong buy for this van and the more expensive three phase one buys nothing extra at home.

Will a 3-pin granny cable keep a Volkswagen ID. Buzz going on a touring holiday?

A 3-pin cable will keep a Volkswagen ID. Buzz topped up, not fill it. The Type 2 to 3-Pin cable puts 2.3 kW into the van, which is about 8 miles of range an hour, so a holiday cottage socket or a friend's garage socket used overnight for twelve hours adds roughly 95 miles, enough for a day of local driving and the run to a public charger. A complete charge from empty would take 38 hours 45 minutes on a 79 kWh van, so on a longer tour it is the cable that gets you to a Type 2 post rather than the one that replaces it. Rapid chargers carry their own tethered lead, so the two cables on this page are the only ones an ID. Buzz ever needs to carry.

Which side of a Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the charging port, and does that decide the cable length?

The charging port on a Volkswagen ID. Buzz is on the right hand rear quarter panel behind the rear wheel, the driver's side in the UK, and yes, it decides the length more than on most cars because the vehicle is so long. Home charger on the driver's side and the van reversed in: 5 metres. Wallbox on the house wall and the van driven in nose first, or a wallbox on the passenger side: 10 metres. Kerbside parking, a yard or a garage set back from the house: 15 or 20 metres. Pace out the route the cable will actually take on your own drive before choosing; a lead that lies flat is safer than one pulled tight around a bumper.

Sizing guide
  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
