The Volkswagen ID.4 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. A 22 kW lead covers the quickest version built and is the one to bring to a three-phase post.

Charging on your own driveway only? Domestic supply here is single phase and caps the car at 7.4 kW. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers that in full and costs less.

Every Volkswagen ID.4 electric car sold in the UK since 2021 has the same Type 2 inlet and needs the same Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, so connector compatibility is never the question, and every Pro, GTX and 4MOTION has an 11 kW onboard charger that gives 7.4 kW on a home wallbox. The exception is the ID.4 Pure, and unusually among electric vehicles the exception is dated rather than badged: a 52 kWh Pure built up to late 2023 has a 7.2 kW single phase charger, while a Pure built from the 2024 model year onwards, including the 58 kWh car that arrived in April 2026, has the same 11 kW unit as the rest of the range. Two Pures parked side by side can look identical and charge at very different speeds at a public charging point, so this page sorts the ID.4 by build date first. The cable that suits both turns out to be the same one, but what the dearer cable can do for you depends entirely on which Pure you own.

Which Volkswagen ID.4 charging cable to buy

The cable that reaches full home speed on any ID.4 is the 32A single phase, shown in our menu as 32amp (7.2kW). Plugged into a domestic wallbox it hands a Pro or GTX the 7.4 kW that is the ceiling for an 11 kW car on one phase, and on a 2021 to 2023 Pure it carries the 7.2 kW that car's own charger tops out at. There is no cable at any price that gets either version fully charged faster on a driveway. Worth it only on an 11 kW ID.4, and only away from the house: the 32A three phase cable. The 22 kW it is built for never reaches an ID.4, because the car's charger stops at 11 kW, but at a workplace bay or a public 22 kW post with three live phases it cuts a 77 kWh Pro from 11 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours. Bring it to an early 52 kWh Pure and it does nothing the single phase lead does not, on any power supply, because a single phase charger can only ever use one of its three phases. A false economy on a battery this size: the 16A cable. The menu label is 16amp (3.6kW); in practice it caps any ID.4 at 3.7 kW, which means a 79 kWh 2026 Pro that the 32A cable fills in 12 hours takes 24 hours 15 minutes, and a seven hour off peak window returns about 112 miles rather than about 231.

Length comes down to the flap, which on the ID.4 sits on the rear quarter on the off side, the driver's side in the UK, and the car is 4.58 metres long. Reverse in with the wallbox on that side of the drive and the lead has a metre or two to cover, so 5 metres does the job with a loop to spare. Drive in forwards and the socket is now at the far end of the car from the house, so the cable has to run past a rear door, along the flank and across to the box, and 10 metres is the length we recommend to stop the plug being tugged at an angle every night. The 15 metre and 20 metre leads are suitable for a wallbox on a garage set back from the house, a long drive, or a car parked on the street outside; on this product both come as 32A single phase, which is the right rating anyway.

Volkswagen's UK specification for the ID.4 at launch listed a Mode 3 Type 2 cable, rated at 32 amps, as standard equipment, so a new vehicle should have a wallbox lead in the boot. Owners taking delivery of later cars generally confirm that lead is present and that no three pin cable is supplied, and a used ID.4 frequently changes hands with the cable missing. For charging from an ordinary household socket we make the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, which appears in the menu as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) and is the lead most owners call a granny charger. At 2.3 kW it adds about 10 miles an hour to a 77 kWh ID.4, so a night at a relative's house is worth around 70 miles, and a full charge from empty would run to 37 hours 45 minutes. Treat it as a backup; its Type B RCD and adjustable current watch over the charging process so an unfamiliar socket cannot become the weak point.

The 52 kWh Pure sold from the 2024 model year to spring 2026 kept the battery but gained the 11 kW charger, so it fills in 8 hours at 7.4 kW and in 5 hours 15 minutes on a three phase supply, and the 58 kWh Pure on sale from April 2026 (265 miles WLTP) needs 8 hours 45 minutes at home and 6 hours at 11 kW. The 2021 to 2023 Pro was certified between 316 and 328 miles depending on trim, so its miles per hour figures sit two or three below the 77 kWh rows, and the 2026 GTX at 326 miles is similar. Note that usable capacities are EV Database measurements; Volkswagen quotes the same packs at 52, 77 and 79 kWh net, so the two agree here. Below freezing and on a motorway run the range column reads lower than shown.

How do I tell whether my Volkswagen ID.4 Pure is a 7.2 kW or an 11 kW car?

By its model year. A Volkswagen ID.4 Pure or Pure Performance built between the 2021 launch and late 2023 has a 7.2 kW single phase onboard charger, and a Pure from the 2024 model year onwards, which reached UK customers from late 2023, has the 11 kW three phase charger fitted to every other ID.4. The 58 kWh Pure launched in April 2026 is 11 kW too. A car first registered in 2021 or 2022 is a 7.2 kW car; a 2023 registration can be either, so ask the dealer to confirm the charger against the VIN before buying a three phase cable for it.

What charging cable comes in the boot of a new Volkswagen ID.4?

A Mode 3 Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated at 32 amps, which Volkswagen UK lists as standard equipment on the ID.4 and which is the EV charging cable for untethered home EV chargers and public posts alike. Nothing that plugs into a domestic three pin socket is included, so an ID.4 owner who wants to charge at a house without a wallbox has to purchase that separately, ideally before the wallbox installation date rather than after. On a used Volkswagen ID.4 lift the boot floor and look, because the factory cable is the item most often kept back by the previous owner.

Does the 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 with the 58 kWh and 79 kWh batteries need a different Type 2 cable?

No. The updated Volkswagen ID.4 that went on sale in April 2026 moved the Pure to a 58 kWh battery and the Pro to 79 kWh, but the Type 2 inlet on the rear quarter and the 11 kW onboard charger are unchanged, so the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is still the one to buy. The larger packs simply take longer: 8 hours 45 minutes for the new Pure and 12 hours for the new Pro at 7.4 kW, against 8 hours and 11 hours 45 minutes for the cars they replaced.

When does the 22 kW cable pay for itself on a Volkswagen ID.4?

Only when the Volkswagen ID.4 has the 11 kW charger and is regularly plugged into a genuine three phase supply, which in practice means a workplace charger or a 22 kW public post. There a 77 kWh Pro or GTX charges in 8 hours instead of 11 hours 45 minutes, and a 2024 onwards 52 kWh Pure in 5 hours 15 minutes instead of 8. On a home wallbox it delivers the identical 7.4 kW as the single phase cable, and on a 2021 to 2023 Pure it cannot beat 7.2 kW anywhere, so in either of those cases the extra spend buys no time at all.

How far will a Volkswagen ID.4 go on one overnight charge at 7.4 kW?

About 231 miles of WLTP range from a seven hour cheap rate window on a 77 kWh or 79 kWh Volkswagen ID.4, because the 32A cable at 7.4 kW adds roughly 33 miles an hour on either battery. A 2021 to 2023 Pure on its 7.2 kW charger adds about 29 miles an hour, or 203 miles over the same seven hours, which is close to its full 213 mile rating. With the 16A cable those figures fall to around 112 to 119 miles, so a driver covering more than 100 miles a day would find the car losing ground night after night.

Should a Volkswagen ID.4 parked nose in have a 10 metre cable?

Yes, in the most common layout. The Volkswagen ID.4's charge port is on the rear quarter on the driver's side, so nose in parking puts the socket at the end of the 4.58 metre car furthest from a wallbox on the house wall, and the lead must run past the rear door and across the width of the drive. That path regularly exceeds 5 metres once the cable has to lie flat on the ground rather than in a straight line. Owners who reverse onto the drive with the wallbox behind the driver's side can order 5 metres, and 15 or 20 metres is for a detached garage or a kerbside space.

Compatibility

Every ID.4 is fully electric and uses Type 2. As with the ID.3, the Pure charges more slowly than the rest of the range: the 52 kWh car is limited to 7.2 kW while the 77 kWh cars do 11 kW.

Trim level makes no difference to charging. City, Life, Style, Match and Max all use the charger that comes with the battery.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
