Product Description

The Vauxhall Frontera Electric charging cable question turns on a number that is unusually generous for a car at this price: 11 kW AC, three phase, standard on Design, GS and Ultimate alike. Vauxhall did not hold the quicker charger back for the top trim, and it does not change with battery size, so the 43.8 kWh car that opened UK order books in January 2025 and the 53.5 kWh Extended Range that followed in the autumn draw current at exactly the same rate. Capacity changes how long the car sits there, nothing else.

Before anything else, check the badge says Electric. Vauxhall sells a Frontera Hybrid alongside this car under the same three trim names, Design, GS and Ultimate, and that version is a 48V self-charging petrol with no charging socket anywhere on it. Nothing will plug into it. The word Electric is the only reliable test here, because the trim name on its own tells you nothing about whether the car takes a lead.

Assuming it is the Electric, the fitting is settled: a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The Vauxhall Frontera Electric carries a Type 2 inlet for AC and the CCS Combo 2 arrangement for DC rapid charging, and there is no Type 1 version. Vauxhall does supply a Mode 3 lead with the car, but publishes neither its length nor its current rating, so it is worth looking at what actually arrived before assuming it covers your driveway.

Now the part that makes this car unusual on our catalogue. Most 11 kW cars come with a warning that the extra phases are wasted, because a British domestic supply carries one phase and a wallbox fed by it hands the Frontera Electric 7.4 kW and no more. That much still applies, and our 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable delivers all 7.4 kW, filling the 53.5 kWh battery in 8 hours 15 mins. What is different is what happens once you leave the house. The Frontera Electric will genuinely take 11 kW where three phases exist, and workplace car parks, retail sites and hotel bays increasingly run 22 kW posts on three phase. Plug in there with the 32A three-phase lead and the Extended Range battery is full in 5 hours 30 mins rather than 8 hours 15 mins. If you park daily somewhere with three-phase AC, this is one of the few cars we sell where paying the extra is the right call instead of money thrown away.

The 16A cable is the false economy on this car. Held to 3.7 kW it needs 16 hours 15 mins to fill the 53.5 kWh Frontera Electric and 13 hours 30 mins for the 43.8 kWh version, so neither finishes inside an off-peak window. Across a seven hour cheap-rate slot the 32A cable banks around 245 miles of driving and the 16A cable around 119, and the price difference between the two is spent back within a couple of months of paying peak rates for the overspill.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable earns its place in the boot even once a wallbox is fitted. It takes 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13A socket, about 11 miles of WLTP range an hour on the Extended Range car, and it can be set as low as 6A where the house wiring is old. Nobody charges a Frontera Electric this way by choice, but a weekend at a relative's house with a socket in the garage, or a wallbox that has stopped answering its app, is precisely when owning one matters.

Vauxhall's other battery cars set their own ceilings. The Mokka-e and the Astra Electric sit either side of the Frontera Electric on size and price, and the whole Vauxhall charging cable range is listed in one place.

Length is decided by the flap on the rear nearside wing, the back left corner as you stand behind the car. Reverse onto a driveway and that corner finishes within a metre or two of the house wall, where 5m is often enough. Drive in nose first and the same flap is now a full car length plus manoeuvring room away from the wallbox, which is where 10m becomes the safer order. Communal parking, a garage at the bottom of the garden or a wallbox fitted on the far gable are what the 15m and 20m cables are for. Construction is to IEC 62196 Type 2 and every cable is CE certified. The Type 2 to Type 2 lead is sealed to IP55; the Type 2 to 3-Pin is IP67. Both work from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. Does every Vauxhall Frontera take a charging cable?

No. Only the Vauxhall Frontera Electric has a charging socket. The Frontera Hybrid sold beside it is a 48V self-charging petrol with no inlet at all, and because both cars are offered as Design, GS and Ultimate, the trim badge cannot tell them apart. Look for the word Electric before ordering any lead, and if the car has no flap on the rear nearside wing, it is the Hybrid.

Which cable is right for a Vauxhall Frontera Electric?

For home use, a 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is right for a Vauxhall Frontera Electric. It passes the full 7.4 kW a domestic supply can give, which is the most the car can take on one phase, and the same cable plugs straight into untethered public AC posts. Buy the 32A three-phase version instead only if you regularly charge somewhere with a genuine three-phase supply.

Is three phase worth paying for on a Vauxhall Frontera Electric?

Yes, if you have somewhere three-phase to plug into, which is rare advice on this site. The Vauxhall Frontera Electric has a true 11 kW three-phase onboard charger fitted as standard, so at a 22 kW post it fills the 53.5 kWh pack in 5 hours 30 mins against 8 hours 15 mins at home. Most owners with only a house wallbox will never see the benefit and should stay with the 32A single-phase lead.

Does the Extended Range battery change the cable a Frontera Electric needs?

No. Both Vauxhall Frontera Electric batteries use the same 11 kW onboard charger, so the 43.8 kWh and 53.5 kWh cars accept current at an identical rate and take the same cable. What changes is duration: on a 7.4 kW wallbox the smaller pack is full in 6 hours 45 mins and the Extended Range in 8 hours 15 mins.

Can I plug a Vauxhall Frontera Electric into a public charge point with my own cable?

Yes. Untethered public AC posts expect the driver to bring a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and the one you use at home on the Vauxhall Frontera Electric is the same cable. A 32A single-phase lead works everywhere; on a three-phase 22 kW post it will still only pass 7.4 kW, which is the one situation where owners of this particular car benefit from carrying the three-phase version.

How long should a Vauxhall Frontera Electric charging cable be?

Most Vauxhall Frontera Electric owners are best served by 10m. The flap sits on the rear nearside wing, so the distance you actually need depends on which way round you park: nose in and the socket ends up diagonally opposite a wallbox by the front door, reversed in and it can be almost touching. Start with the badge rather than the trim, because Vauxhall sells a Frontera Hybrid under those same three names and it is a 48V self-charging petrol with no socket to plug into. Once the car says Electric, capacity is the only thing separating the two rows above, since both packs feed an identical 11 kW charger. At home that charger meets a single live conductor and settles at 7.4 kW, so the 32A single-phase lead is the one to order and it passes every watt the house can give. This is then one of the rare cars where the three-phase version also earns its keep, because at a genuine 22 kW post the Frontera Electric really will draw its full 11 kW.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
