Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

Kia quotes the EV6 onboard charger at 10.5 kW three phase. Reaching that at a workplace or public three-phase post takes a three-phase cable, and the 32A three phase is the one we sell, so it is the cable that gives the car its maximum charge speed away from home.

Only charging at home? A British house is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW whatever cable is plugged into it. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) gives you all of that for less money.

Every Kia EV6 sold in the UK, from the 2021 launch cars through the 2024 facelift to the 63 kWh Air Standard Range added in May 2025, takes AC power through a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable is the correct Kia EV6 charging cable whatever the badge on the boot says. The onboard charger stops at 10.5 kW, and a house here hands over 7.4 kW of that. Kia's own EV6 brochure prints the on-board charger maximum capacity as 10.5 kW. The 11 kW quoted elsewhere is the rating of the chargepoint in Kia's charge time column, not of the car, which is why Kia's own 7 hours 35 minutes for an 84 kWh EV6 on a three phase unit looks slow for an 11 kW machine. It is right for a 10.5 kW one.

The EV6 is famous for the half of charging this page cannot sell you. Its 800 volt electrical architecture is what puts 10 to 80 per cent into the battery in 18 minutes, and all of that happens on a DC rapid charger whose lead is bolted to the post. On AC the car is unremarkable: a middling onboard charger, a standard socket, and a domestic supply that settles everything else. An 800 volt car with an ordinary AC side makes for a small decision here, even though the car is not.

Kia EV6 charging cable choices for home charging

The cable for a home charger: the 32A single phase. Our option list names it 32amp (7.2kW); it passes 7.4 kW, which is all a single phase supply has and the most any EV6 will pull from one. Empty to full comes out at 11 hours 15 minutes for a 77.4 kWh car, 12 hours 15 minutes for an 84 kWh one and 9 hours 15 minutes for the 63 kWh Air Standard Range. Real, but idle at a house: the 32A three phase. Its 22 kW label describes what the lead can carry, not what the car will accept, and an EV6 will not go past 10.5 kW under any circumstances. Passing more than 7.4 kW also needs three live phases at the socket, and a domestic meter has one. At a workplace charger or a 22 kW public AC post the 84 kWh EV6 does drop from 12 hours 15 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes, which is the only argument for owning one. The false economy: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car at 3.7 kW, stretching those three charges to 22 hours 30 minutes, 24 hours 30 minutes and 18 hours 15 minutes, and shrinking what a seven hour off-peak window returns from around 231 miles to around 119. The saving is repaid at the daytime rate.

Length asks more thought on an EV6 than on most electric cars, because Kia put the flap in an unusual spot. We build this Kia EV6 charging cable in four lengths, 5m to 20m. The flap sits on the offside rear flank, the rear right corner where the side panel turns into the tail, and the car measures 4.7 metres (4,695 mm on the facelift). Back onto a drive with the wallbox on the driver's side and the inlet finishes up beside the unit, where 5m is ample. Drive in nose first, as most do, and the socket sits a car's length from the charger, which is what the 10m is for. At the kerb the flap turns towards the road and the lead comes round the tail of the car, again 10m. The 15m and 20m lengths are 32A single phase and exist for a detached garage, a bay in shared parking, or a unit fitted at the house end of a long drive.

Keep a household lead as insurance, not as the weekly charge. Kia's UK EV6 specification does not list a charging cable among the standard equipment, and a used EV6 arrives with whatever the last owner left in it, so open the boot before handover. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, shown as the 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option, takes 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket and returns about 10 miles of range an hour. A Type B RCD sits inside its control box, and the current draw winds back for older wiring. Against a battery this size that is slow work, 36 hours 15 minutes to fill a 77.4 kWh EV6 from flat, so it earns its place on a weekend away, not a driveway.

Onboard chargers vary across Kia's electric models, so the times on the Kia EV9 charging cable page are not the ones above, and every lead we build for the brand sits under Kia charging cables. As for the leads themselves, the Type 2 to Type 2 holds its rating from -30C to +50C and the Type 2 to 3-Pin from -30C to +60C. IEC 62196-2 is the standard behind the Type 2 to Type 2, a Mode 3 lead, which is CE marked and sealed to IP55. The 3-Pin lead answers to IEC 62752 instead, carries CE marking, and is sealed further to IP67. GT-Line and GT-Line S cars on larger wheels are rated at 339 and 324 miles WLTP with all wheel drive, so their range per hour lands a few miles under the figures above. Kia quotes 84, 77.4 and 63 kWh without saying whether those are gross or usable, so the usable numbers here come from independent measurement and the times are approximate. Sub-zero mornings and long stretches at 70 mph will each shave the range added per hour.

Is the Kia EV6 onboard charger 10.5 kW or 11 kW?

10.5 kW. Kia's EV6 brochure gives the on-board charger a maximum capacity of 10.5 kW, and the 11 kW figure that appears alongside it is the rating of the three phase chargepoint in Kia's charge time table, not of the car. Both numbers come from Kia and they describe different pieces of equipment. Nothing about the cable you buy changes either way, because a UK home supplies 7.4 kW to any Kia EV6 regardless. If a listing or a comparison website quotes 11 kW for the car itself, the question is which piece of equipment that number describes.

Which Type 2 cable suits a Kia EV6 on a driveway?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, on every battery Kia has sold here. It carries the full 7.4 kW a single phase house provides, which is the ceiling for a Kia EV6 charging at home, and it also works on a 16A wallbox if you move or change car. Scheduling, load balancing and tariff control sit inside the wallbox, so this cable suits an Ohme, a Zappi, a Pod Point or any other untethered unit, and it is the same lead you carry for an untethered public Type 2 post. A Kia EV6 is not sold with a Type 2 cable included as standard, so this is the lead most owners buy first.

Does the 800 volt system make a Kia EV6 charge faster on AC?

No. The 800 volt architecture of the Kia EV6 is what allows 10 to 80 per cent on a DC rapid charger in about 18 minutes, through the CCS Combo 2 section of the same inlet, and every DC rapid charger comes with its own tethered lead. AC charging runs through a separate onboard charger rated at 10.5 kW, so a Kia EV6 fills at the same 7.4 kW at home as many 400 volt cars do. The clever voltage buys nothing from a Type 2 cable.

Is the three phase cable a waste of money on a Kia EV6?

At home, yes. A Kia EV6 accepts 10.5 kW at most on AC, and reaching anything above 7.4 kW needs three live phases arriving at the socket, which a house does not have. The 32A three phase cable therefore hands an EV6 the same 7.4 kW as the cheaper single phase lead on a driveway. It repays the extra only if you regularly park at a workplace charger or a 22 kW public AC post, where an 84 kWh EV6 finishes in 8 hours 30 minutes rather than 12 hours 15 minutes.

Do the three Kia EV6 batteries charge at different speeds?

No, they take power at the same rate. The 63 kWh, 77.4 kWh and 84 kWh Kia EV6 all use the same 10.5 kW onboard charger and all draw 7.4 kW from a home wallbox, adding about 33 miles of range an hour each. Only the total time differs, because there is more or less to fill: 9 hours 15 minutes, 11 hours 15 minutes and 12 hours 15 minutes from empty. That makes the battery a range choice rather than a cable one, so anyone comparing models on sale second hand can set it aside.

Where is the Kia EV6 charging flap, and is 5m long enough?

The Kia EV6 flap is on the offside rear flank, at the corner where the bodyside meets the tail of a 4.7 metre car. 5m reaches when you reverse onto a drive and the wallbox is on that same side, close to the back of the car. 10m is the safer order for a nose-in park, a kerbside charge, or a wallbox anywhere other than the rear offside corner, because the lead then has to travel the length of the vehicle. Measure that route before you purchase, rather than working from the photographs in a dealer's listing, and you will find the length obvious.

Compatibility

Every EV6 is fully electric and takes a Type 2 cable. UK cars launched with the 77.4 kWh battery only. Kia quotes the onboard charger at 10.5 kW three phase, which is about 7.4 kW on a UK home supply, so a 32A single-phase cable is the right lead at home. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
