Product Description

The Kia EV9 takes 11 kW AC on every UK trim, from the entry Air through to the GT. That is a three phase number, so at home the car draws 7.4 kW and a 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable hands it over in full. There is only one battery in the UK EV9, a 99.8 kWh pack, so the cable answer does not change with trim.

Every Kia EV9 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The car has a CCS Combo 2 inlet on the rear right wing, and AC charging happens through the Type 2 section at the top of it.

What makes the EV9 different from almost everything else on this site is the sheer size of the battery. At 99.8 kWh it is roughly twice a family hatchback's, and that changes which cables are actually viable rather than merely slower. A three pin lead needs 49 hours to fill an EV9 from empty. That is not a slow charge, it is two full days, and it means the three pin cable can only ever be a top up on this car.

The 32A single phase cable is the right buy for the vast majority of EV9 owners. It moves the car from empty to full in about 15 hours 15 minutes, which sounds long until you consider that nobody charges a 349 mile car from zero very often. The number that matters day to day is 26 miles of range per hour. A seven hour overnight cheap rate window puts about 180 miles back into the car, which covers a week of school runs and commuting for most families before the car needs another thought.

Run the same maths on a 16A cable and the picture falls apart. At 3.7 kW the EV9 gains roughly 13 miles an hour, so the same overnight window returns about 90 miles. On a seven seat car doing regular long family trips, one night on the cheap lead simply will not replace what a weekend away takes out. Empty to full on the 16A lead takes 30 hours 30 minutes. The battery is simply too big for the cheaper cable to keep up with.

The three phase 22 kW cable is capped by the EV9 to 11 kW and needs a three phase supply to reach even that. UK houses have a single phase feed, so at home it performs identically to the 32A single phase lead while costing more. Where it does pay is a workplace or business park with three phase charging, where the EV9 finishes in about 10 hours 15 minutes and gains 38 miles an hour.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable still earns its place in the boot at 2.3 kW and roughly 8 miles an hour. Left plugged in overnight at a hotel or a relative's house it returns 60 or 70 miles, which is enough to get you to a proper charger rather than enough to fill the car. Treat it as insurance, not as a charging plan.

The all wheel drive GT-Line, GT-Line S and GT trims are rated at 313 to 316 miles rather than 349, so their range added per hour is roughly a tenth lower while the charging times stay the same. Kia publishes 99.8 kWh as the total pack size and does not state a usable figure, so these times are calculated on the total and will run slightly long in practice. Both cold weather and sustained high speeds cut this figure.

What is the best charging cable for a Kia EV9?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable is the best cable for a Kia EV9 at home. It delivers the full 7.4 kW a UK domestic supply allows and returns around 180 miles of range across a seven hour off peak window, which is enough for most families to charge once or twice a week.

Do the EV9 trims charge at different speeds?

No. Every UK Kia EV9, from the Air to the GT, uses the same 99.8 kWh battery and the same 11 kW onboard AC charger, so all of them charge at the same rate from a given cable. The only difference between trims is efficiency: the rear wheel drive Air travels 349 miles on a charge against 313 to 316 for the all wheel drive versions, so each hour of charging buys the Air slightly more miles.

Do I need the 22kW cable for a Kia EV9?

Only if you have somewhere three phase to plug it in. The Kia EV9 accepts 11 kW, which needs three phases, and British homes are fed by one. On a domestic wallbox a 22 kW cable charges an EV9 at exactly the same speed as the 32A single phase lead. At a three phase workplace charger it cuts a full charge from 15 hours 15 minutes to 10 hours 15 minutes.

Can a three pin cable charge a Kia EV9?

It can, but not quickly enough to rely on. A three pin cable adds about 8 miles of range an hour to a Kia EV9 and would need 49 hours to fill the 99.8 kWh battery from empty. It is a sensible thing to carry for overnight stops where no wallbox exists, and a poor substitute for a proper home charging setup.

How long should an EV9 charging cable be?

The Kia EV9 is a little over five metres long with its charging inlet on the rear right wing, which is the longest car most owners will ever park on a domestic driveway. A 5m cable only works if the wallbox is close to where that rear corner sits. Given the length of the car, most EV9 owners are better served by a 10m lead, and anyone parking on the street or in a shared bay should look at 15m.

How many miles does an EV9 gain overnight?

Around 180 miles in a seven hour cheap rate window on a 32A single phase cable. The same window on a 16A cable gives a Kia EV9 about 90 miles. Because the battery holds 99.8 kWh, the gap between the two cables compounds every night rather than costing you once.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
