Product Description

A Geely EX5 charging cable is settled by one number, and it is a good one. Every UK Geely EX5 has an 11 kW three phase onboard charger as standard, from the SE up to the Ultra, which is a strong AC charger for a car at this price. It is worth knowing because the wallbox Geely bundles with the car cannot use all of it. The launch offer pairs the EX5 with a 7 kW single phase home unit, putting roughly two thirds of the car's AC capability to work. That is fine on a driveway, where nothing could do better. It does mean the EX5 is one of the few cars we sell for where the three phase cable earns its keep away from the house.

Every Geely EX5 charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The charging lid sits on the offside front wing, behind the front wheel arch and ahead of the driver's door, with the AC and the DC connections sharing one flap.

For home use, order the 32A single phase lead. British houses are wired with a single phase, and one phase carries 7.4 kW, so that is what an EX5 receives on any domestic wallbox regardless of what its charger could manage. Where the 11 kW shows up is a 22 kW public AC post or a workplace fed by three real phases. There the 32A three phase cable brings a 60.22 kWh EX5 down from 9 hours 15 minutes to 6 hours 15 minutes. Two cables, two jobs, and on this particular car both are defensible.

What is not defensible is the 16A lead. It holds the EX5 at 3.7 kW, doubling a full charge to 18 hours 30 minutes and cutting recovery from 33 miles an hour to 16. On a car with 267 miles of range, that is the difference between charging overnight and charging over a weekend.

A domestic socket lead still deserves boot space. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable operates at 2.3 kW from a normal 13 amp outlet, about 10 miles an hour, so a full charge is out of the question while a night somewhere with no chargepoint is worth around 80 miles. Construction is IEC 62196 Type 2 throughout, CE and TUV certified, usable from -30C to 55C. The Type 2 to Type 2 cables are sealed to IP55 and the Type 2 to 3-Pin to IP67. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty applies to all of them, and UK delivery is free on the next working day.

The 267 mile figure is the SE on 18 inch wheels. The Pro is rated at 258 miles and the Max at 255 on their 19 inch wheels, so subtract a mile or two an hour from the recovery column on those trims. Charge times are unaffected, because the battery is the same size.

Geely calls these capacities usable and publishes no gross figure, and its own owner's manual works out at 60.16 kWh for the smaller pack, so treat the times as close rather than exact. Frost and fast motorway miles will each pull the recovery column down.

What charging cable does a Geely EX5 need?

Buy a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable for a Geely EX5. For charging at home choose the 32A single phase version, which hands over the full 7.4 kW a British house can supply, and that is as much as the car can draw from a domestic wallbox whatever its charger is rated at.

Is the Geely EX5 really 11kW on AC?

Yes. Geely Auto UK states an 11 kW three phase onboard charger as standard across the EX5 range, and it is one of the stronger AC chargers at this money. The figure you actually see at home is 7.4 kW, because a house supplies one phase rather than three, and no cable can change that.

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth it on a Geely EX5?

More than on most cars. A Geely EX5 genuinely accepts 11 kW, so on a 22 kW public AC post or a three phase workplace supply the three phase cable cuts a full charge from 9 hours 15 minutes to 6 hours 15 minutes. On a home wallbox it changes nothing, so buy it for the places you charge away from the house.

How long does a Geely EX5 take to charge at home?

About 9 hours 15 minutes from empty on a 32A cable for the 60.22 kWh Geely EX5 SE, Pro and Max, and around 10 hours 30 minutes for the 68.39 kWh Ultra. Geely's own claim of 6.1 hours from 10 to 100 percent on a 7 kW wallbox does not reconcile with those battery figures, so we have published the arithmetic instead.

Do the 60kWh and 68kWh Geely EX5 batteries need different cables?

No. Both Geely EX5 batteries take the same 32A single phase cable at home and the same three phase lead away from it, because the Ultra's larger pack did not bring a different charger with it. The Ultra simply takes about an hour and a quarter longer to fill.

What length of cable does a Geely EX5 need?

The charging flap is on the offside front wing of a 4.615 metre car, so 5m reaches when the wallbox is towards the front of the drive on the driver's side. Reverse in, or mount the unit on the far wall, and the lead has to cross the width and most of the length of the car, which is where 10m becomes the sensible order.

Compatibility

Every UK Geely EX5 is fully electric, so there is no petrol or self-charging version to catch you out. All four trims share the same 11 kW three phase onboard charger and the same Type 2 inlet, and only the battery changes. Geely publishes these capacities as usable and does not give a gross figure. Note that Geely also sells the EX2, a smaller electric car with a 6.6 kW charger, and the Starray EM-i, a plug-in hybrid whose AC rate Geely has not published, so neither shares the figures below.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
