The CUPRA Leon e-Hybrid accepts up to 11 kW on AC. Cars from 2020 to 2024 are 3.6 kW and the 2024 facelift is 11 kW. This cable carries the fastest version at full speed and works on any three-phase charge point you meet.

Only charging at home? A British house is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW whatever cable is plugged into it. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) gives you all of that for less money.

Any CUPRA Leon charging cable for the plug-in e-HYBRID is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and it is the model year that sets the rating: cars built from 2020 to 2024 have a 3.6 kW onboard charger, while the 2024 facelift carries an 11 kW one that a British house feeds at 7.4 kW. Cupra sells this car on its power figure, and power is the one number here that decides nothing: the 204 PS Leon and the 272 PS VZ take current at exactly the same rate as each other, while the 245 PS car that came before them, faster than either in its day, fills at a third of it. What moved in 2024 was the battery, 12.8 kWh gross on the older hatch and Sportstourer against 25.8 kWh on the cars that replaced them, with a charger to suit. A Leon 1.5 TSI, 1.5 eTSI or 2.0 TSI has no flap in its wing and takes none of these cables, because the e-HYBRID is the only PHEV in the Leon line and the only one with a socket.

Choosing a CUPRA Leon charging cable by model year

Full speed on a 2020 to 2024 Leon e-HYBRID: the 16A cable. Our menu shows it as 16amp (3.6kW), and 3.6 kW is precisely where that car's onboard charger stops, so its 10.6 kWh usable is back inside 3 hours 15 minutes and nothing dearer improves on it. Full speed at home on a 2024 on Leon e-HYBRID or Leon VZ e-HYBRID: the 32A single phase cable, listed as 32amp (7.2kW). It passes 7.4 kW, which is all a single phase house can give, and empties to full on the 19.7 kWh pack in 3 hours against the 6 hours a 16A lead needs on the same car. Right lead, wrong supply, on a driveway: the 32A three phase cable. A 22 kW rating does not raise what a car will accept, it opens a route the supply then has to fill, and a domestic circuit has one live phase to send down it. Plugged in at a house the facelift still settles at 7.4 kW and the older car at 3.6 kW. The rating counts at a workplace bay or a 22 kW public post wired for three phases, where a 2024 Leon accepts the whole 11 kW and a full charge takes 2 hours instead of 3.

Cable length is the other half of the order, and it starts at the flap. Cupra puts that in the nearside front wing, ahead of the passenger door, which suits the hatch better than it suits the estate. The Leon hatch measures 4.40 metres and the Leon Sportstourer 4.66 metres, and every centimetre of that difference sits behind the socket rather than in front of it, so it only bites on a reverse park. Nose in with the wallbox to the left of the bay and 5 metres reaches on either body. Reverse in, or mount the box on the offside, and the lead travels back down the flank of the car, which is the job the 10 metre length exists for. The 15 metre and 20 metre versions, both 32A single phase, cover a garage set back from the house or a space in a shared court. Check the run before the EV charge point is sited, because the cable is the only part of it you can change afterwards.

Cupra has always sent this car out with two leads: its UK price lists give a Mode 2 three pin cable and a Mode 3 charging station cable as standard on the Leon e-HYBRID, in the 2022 list and again in July 2024. Second hand that counts for little: the Mode 3 lead is the item a departing owner keeps. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, shown in the menu as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), replaces whichever one is missing, and on the older car it is a working charger rather than a spare: 2.3 kW out of a 13 amp socket refills a 2020 to 2024 Leon e-HYBRID in 5 hours 15 minutes, so an owner with no wallbox still begins every day on electricity. The 19.7 kWh facelift wants 9 hours 45 minutes from the same lead, an overnight job with little to spare, so on that car it lives in the boot for hotels and family driveways. It is built to IEC 62752 with a Type B RCD and adjustable current, so a tired circuit can be wound back to 6 amps, and it plugs into the wall socket itself rather than an extension reel.

Cupra's current UK site quotes up to 81 miles of electric range for the 204 PS car while its July 2024 price list gives 75 to 77 miles for the 272 PS VZ, so the two 2024 tables differ by trim and not by battery. Cupra publishes 25.8 kWh gross for the facelift without a separate usable figure, and the 19.7 kWh worked from here is the net capacity given by independent specification databases; Cupra's own 0 to 100 per cent time of 2 hours 30 minutes at 11 kW is more cautious than the row above. On the 2020 to 2024 car Cupra publishes 12.8 kWh gross and quotes 3 hours 33 minutes at 3.6 kW, so the 3 hours 15 minutes shown here rests on an estimated 10.6 kWh usable and reads a little optimistically. Cold mornings and long motorway stints each take miles off the hourly figures, as they do on any electric car.

Which cable rating does a CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable on a 2020 to 2024 CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID, and a 32A single phase one on the 2024 facelift. The older car's onboard charger stops at 3.6 kW, which the 16A lead already carries in full, so it reaches a full 10.6 kWh in 3 hours 15 minutes whatever else is attached. The facelift accepts 11 kW and pulls 7.4 kW from a domestic wallbox, so the 32A lead cuts its charge from 6 hours to 3. The connector is Type 2 on both, hatch and Sportstourer alike, so on this vehicle only the amperage is in question.

Does more power mean faster charging on a CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID?

No. A 272 PS CUPRA Leon VZ e-HYBRID and a 204 PS Leon e-HYBRID share one 11 kW onboard charger and one 19.7 kWh battery, so both take 3 hours from empty on a 7.4 kW wallbox and both want the same 32A single phase cable. The VZ's extra 68 PS is a performance figure and not a charging one, so it shows up on a road and nowhere on a driveway. The only Leon e-HYBRID that charges to a different clock is the 245 PS car built up to 2024, and it is the slower of the two rather than the quicker.

Why does a 2023 CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID charge so much slower than a 2025 one?

Because Cupra replaced the entire plug-in system in 2024. A 2023 CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID pairs a 1.4 TSI with a 12.8 kWh battery and a 3.6 kW onboard charger, and Cupra's own UK figure for a full charge is 3 hours 33 minutes. The 2025 car is a 1.5 TSI with 25.8 kWh gross, about 19.7 kWh of it usable, an 11 kW charger and DC rapid charging as well. It holds close to twice the energy and takes it in at three times the rate, which is why the newer car is the one that repays a 32A lead.

What cables does CUPRA supply with a Leon e-HYBRID?

Two of them, when the car is new. Cupra's UK price lists for the Leon e-HYBRID list a Mode 2 three pin cable and a Mode 3 charging station cable as standard equipment, in the 2022 list and again in the July 2024 one. On a used CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID neither is promised, because the Mode 3 lead is the piece most often kept back by an owner moving to another plug-in car, and a Leon that has been through two hands can arrive with an empty boot floor. Check under the boot floor first rather than after the installer has gone.

Where would a three phase cable actually help a CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID?

At a socket fed by three phases, with a 2024 on car plugged into it. There a CUPRA Leon e-HYBRID accepts the whole 11 kW, and a charge from empty runs to 2 hours rather than 3. Every home charge point in Britain runs from a single phase, so on a driveway the three phase lead gives the facelift the same 7.4 kW as the 32A single phase cable, and gives a 2020 to 2024 Leon the same 3.6 kW its charger allows. Workplace chargers and 22 kW public charging stations are where those extra phases exist, and the same Type 2 lead works at any untethered EV charge point.

Does a Leon Sportstourer estate need a longer cable than the hatch?

Often, yes. A CUPRA Leon Sportstourer e-HYBRID is 4.66 metres long against 4.40 metres for the hatch, and since the charge flap is in the nearside front wing the extra length all sits behind the socket. Park either body nose in with the wallbox on the left of the bay and 5 metres reaches without strain. Reverse the estate onto a drive, or fit the box on the far side, and the run grows by most of the length of the car, which is the point at which 10 metres stops being optional, so order it before the wallbox goes in. The 15 and 20 metre leads suit a detached garage or a bay away from the house.

Compatibility

The Leon e-HYBRID is worth checking the year on, because CUPRA changed the charging hardware completely in 2024. The original car has a 12.8 kWh battery and a 3.6 kW charger, which means a 16A cable is all it can draw and a bigger one will not speed it up. The 2024 facelift is a different car in this respect: 19.7 kWh usable, an 11 kW charger and, unusually for a plug-in hybrid, CCS rapid charging at 50 kW. That takes a full charge down to about two and a half hours. If yours is the new one, a 32A cable is worth having. Note that the Leon eTSI and the TSI petrol have no charging port at all.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
