Product Description

The BYD Sealion 7 wears an 11 kW on AC badge across Comfort RWD, Design AWD and Excellence AWD, and that single number is where owners of this car are most often talked into spending money they do not need to spend. Eleven kilowatts is a three-phase figure. British homes are not wired for three phases, so a Sealion 7 on a domestic wallbox draws 7.4 kW, and the lead that delivers all of it is the ordinary 1-Phase, 32A cable.

It is worth being blunt about what a 22 kW cable does on a normal British supply, because this is a premium family SUV and the upgrade gets offered to almost everyone who buys one. A 3-Phase 32A cable is built to carry 22 kW across three live conductors. Connect it to a house that has one live conductor and only that conductor carries current. The result is 7.4 kW, exactly what you already had, through a heavier and dearer lead. The car is not the limit here and neither is the cable. The supply is.

Three phase does exist, and where it exists the cable repays itself straight away. Some workplaces have it, so do some newer developments and rural properties on a converted agricultural supply, and a handful of owners have paid to have it brought in. On such a feed the Sealion 7 accepts its full 11 kW and the 91.3 kWh Excellence AWD fills in about 9 hours 30 minutes rather than 14. If you do not already know whether you have three phase, you almost certainly do not, and a glance at the meter tails or one call to your installer settles it before any money changes hands.

Whichever trim is on your driveway, the connector is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Comfort RWD and Design AWD carry 82.5 kWh, Excellence AWD carries 91.3 kWh, and all three accept the same 11 kW, so the pack under the floor moves the hours involved but never the cable you buy.

What does deserve caution is going the other way and buying down. A 16A cable holds the Sealion 7 at 3.7 kW, past 25 hours from empty on the 82.5 kWh battery and past 28 hours on the 91.3 kWh, at around 13 miles of range an hour. That, not the three-phase lead, is the genuine false economy on this car. Treat 32A single phase as the floor and the 22 kW upgrade as optional.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable in 5m or 10m runs at 2.3 kW from a standard 13A socket, close to two days from empty on a pack this size. Keep one for places with no charge point, not for daily use at home. What a household three-pin socket can and cannot do.

Type 2 to Type 2 lengths run 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m. At 4.83m the Sealion 7 is a large SUV and tends to sit further from the wallbox than a smaller car would, so measure the actual route rather than the straight line. Is the three-phase cable a waste of money on a BYD Sealion 7?

On a single-phase home supply, yes, three phase is money spent for nothing on a BYD Sealion 7, because it charges at the same 7.4 kW as the cheaper alternative. It stops being a waste the instant you have a real three-phase supply, at work or at home, where the car draws its full 11 kW and a full charge drops to about 9 hours 30 minutes.

Do the two BYD Sealion 7 batteries need different cables?

No. Both BYD Sealion 7 batteries use the same 32A single-phase lead. The 82.5 kWh Comfort RWD and Design AWD fill in 12 hours 30 minutes and the 91.3 kWh Excellence AWD in 14 hours, an hour and a half apart on identical hardware. Only the clock changes.

Yes, a BYD Sealion 7 charges from a standard 13A three-pin socket at 2.3 kW, adding roughly 8 miles of range an hour. That suits an overnight stay away from home and is impractical as a routine, since filling the pack at that rate runs to two days.

How many metres of cable does a BYD Sealion 7 need?

Ten metres suits most BYD Sealion 7 owners. The car is 4.83m long with the charge socket well back, so 5m works only where the wallbox stands right beside the parking space. Check the path the lead has to take around the body and up to the unit, then move to 15m or 20m for a detached garage or a shared parking area.

All three trims accept the same 11 kW. On a UK single-phase home supply the car draws 7.4 kW, which our 32A single-phase cable delivers in full. Avoid the 16A cable on batteries this size, it puts a full charge past 25 hours.   • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
