Product Description

The BYD Seal 6 DM-i is the one car in the BYD range where we will talk you out of the bigger cable. It is a plug-in hybrid with a modest onboard charger: 3.3 kW on the Boost and 6.6 kW on the Comfort Lite and Comfort. Both figures sit well under what a 32A cable can carry, so the trim you own genuinely changes what you should buy.

Every BYD Seal 6 DM-i uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. BYD did not fit a Type 1 inlet to this car, so the socket end is settled before you start and only the amperage is open.

If you have the Boost, with the 10.08 kWh battery, the car will only ever draw 3.3 kW. A 16A cable carries 3.7 kW, which is already more than the car can use, so our 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable charges it exactly as fast as a 32A cable would. Buying the 32A version will not save you a single minute. That makes the Boost the only car on this site where we recommend the cheaper cable.

If you have the Comfort Lite or Comfort, with the 19 kWh battery, the car takes 6.6 kW. A 16A cable holds it back to 3.7 kW and nearly doubles your charging time, so here the 32A cable is worth it. It brings a full charge down from about 5 hours 45 minutes to about 3 hours 15, and lifts you from 13 electric miles an hour to 23.

The 3-Phase 32A cable is not a sensible purchase for either trim. The car cannot exceed 6.6 kW, so the extra capability has nowhere to go.

Because the battery is small, our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is a realistic everyday option. From an ordinary UK 13A socket the Boost fills from empty in about five hours and the Comfort in about nine and a half, so an overnight plug-in covers either. If you have no wallbox and no plans for one, this is a sound choice for a Seal 6 DM-i. See how a standard household socket performs over a full night.

Which cable does a BYD Seal 6 DM-i actually need?

It depends on the trim of your BYD Seal 6 DM-i, which is unusual advice from a cable shop. The Boost draws 3.3 kW and wants the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, because nothing larger will make it any quicker. The Comfort Lite and Comfort draw 6.6 kW and want the 32A, because a 16A cable nearly doubles their charging time.

Why do you recommend the cheaper cable for the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Boost?

Because a BYD Seal 6 DM-i Boost cannot use anything more. Its onboard charger stops at 3.3 kW and a 16A cable already carries 3.7 kW, so a 32A cable finishes the same 3 hours 30 mins and charges you more for the privilege. The one caveat is your next car: move to something that takes 7 kW or higher and a 16A cable becomes the limiting factor, so weigh how long you plan to keep this one.

How do I tell which BYD Seal 6 DM-i trim I have?

Look at the battery size and the quoted electric range. A BYD Seal 6 DM-i Boost has the 10.08 kWh battery and around 34 miles in the Saloon or 31 in the Touring. The Comfort Lite and Comfort carry the 19 kWh battery at around 65 and 62 miles. If you cannot tell, the 32A cable is the safe purchase, since it works correctly on both and you would simply be paying for capability the Boost cannot reach.

Is a three-phase cable any use on a BYD Seal 6 DM-i?

No. A BYD Seal 6 DM-i never exceeds 6.6 kW on any trim, so a three-phase cable has nothing extra to offer even with three-phase power behind the socket. This is one of the clearest cases in our range where the dearer cable is the wrong purchase.

How long does a BYD Seal 6 DM-i take on a three-pin socket?

About five hours for a BYD Seal 6 DM-i Boost and about nine and a half for the Comfort, both from empty at 2.3 kW. Each fits comfortably inside a night, which is why a three-pin cable stands up as a primary method on this car when there is no wallbox.

What cable length should I order for a BYD Seal 6 DM-i?

5m suits a BYD Seal 6 DM-i parked nose-in next to the wallbox, which covers most driveways. Move to 10m where the charge point ends up behind the car, off to one side, or across a shared bay. The Type 2 to Type 2 also comes in 15m and 20m when the parking space is further out.

This is the one BYD where the trim changes the answer. The Boost draws only 3.3 kW, which a 16A cable already exceeds, so a 32A cable will not charge it any faster. The Comfort and Comfort Lite draw 6.6 kW, which needs the 32A cable to reach in full. No trim can use a three-phase cable, since the car caps out at 6.6 kW.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
