Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

An XC90 T8 built from 2022 has a 6.4 kW onboard charger that needs two live phases, and a three phase cable is the only way to reach it. Volvo quotes three hours to full at that rate instead of five.

At home it makes no difference. A British house is single phase and holds the car to 3.7 kW whichever cable is plugged in, so the 16A cable (5m / 10m) covers home charging in full and costs a good deal less. Cars built before 2022 cap at 3.7 kW on any supply and never need more than the 16A.

A Volvo XC90 T8 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the year on the plate changes which one you want. This is one of the few cars on our site where a three phase cable earns its money.

From 2022 the T8 carries an 18.8 kWh battery and a 6.4 kW onboard charger, but that charger needs two live phases to reach 6.4 kW. Volvo quotes three hours to full at that rate. A British house is supplied with one phase, which holds the car to 3.7 kW and five hours no matter what is plugged in, so the 16A cable covers home charging in full. The three phase cable is what turns a three phase post into a three hour charge instead of a five hour one.

Built before 2022, the answer is simpler. The 9.2 kWh Twin Engine of 2015 to 2019 and the 11.6 kWh Recharge of 2020 to 2021 both cap at 3.7 kW on any supply, single phase or three. On those cars the 16A is everything the car will ever take.

The 32A single phase cable is the one to skip here. On a single phase the XC90 still draws 3.7 kW, so it charges no faster than the 16A and costs more. Buy the 16A for the driveway, or the three phase cable if you regularly use three phase posts and want the shorter charge when you do.

On length, the charge flap sits on the nearside front wing, the left as you face the car from the front. Nose in to a wallbox on that side and 5m is plenty. Reverse in, park on the far side of a bay, or run to a box on the opposite wall and 10m is the safer buy.

Times are Volvo's own figures for the 18.8 kWh car. The 9.2 kWh and 11.6 kWh versions stop at 3.7 kW on every supply and finish in roughly two and a half and three hours on the 16A cable. Cold weather stretches all of these.

Which cable does a Volvo XC90 T8 need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 16A version is the right buy for home charging on any XC90 T8, because a single phase British supply limits the car to 3.7 kW whatever cable you use. Choose the three phase cable instead if your car is a 2022 or newer 18.8 kWh T8 and you charge at three phase posts, where it reaches 6.4 kW.

Will a 22kW cable charge my XC90 T8 faster?

At a three phase charge point, yes, if your car is a 2022 or later T8. It lifts the car from 3.7 kW to 6.4 kW and cuts a full charge from five hours to three. At home it makes no difference at all, because a house has one phase and the car takes 3.7 kW from it either way.

Is the 32A single phase cable worth it on an XC90?

No. The 32A single phase cable can carry 7.4 kW but the XC90 T8 will only draw 3.7 kW from one phase, so it charges at exactly the same speed as the cheaper 16A cable. If you want a faster charge from this car, the three phase cable is the one that delivers it.

How long does an XC90 T8 take to charge?

Volvo quotes five hours from empty at 3.7 kW and three hours at 6.4 kW for the 18.8 kWh car. The older 11.6 kWh and 9.2 kWh cars take around three hours and two and a half hours on the 16A cable. A three pin plug needs about seven hours on the newest battery.

Does every XC90 need a charging cable?

Only the T8 Recharge and T8 Twin Engine plug in. The B5 and B6 are mild hybrids with no charging port, and the older D5 diesel and T5 and T6 petrol cars do not plug in either. If there is no flap on the nearside front wing, the car does not take a cable.

What length cable should I buy for an XC90?

5m works if you nose in and the charge point is on the left hand side. 10m is the safer choice for reversing onto a driveway, for a wallbox on the opposite wall, or for public bays where the post can end up on the wrong side. Measure the route around the car, not the straight line.

Compatibility

Only a T8 Recharge or Twin Engine XC90 plugs in. A B5 or B6 is a mild hybrid with no charging port, and neither an older D5 diesel nor a T5 or T6 petrol will take a cable. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

The battery doubled over the car's life, from 9.2 kWh to 18.8 kWh, and in 2022 the onboard charger went up from 3.7 kW to 6.4 kW. That 6.4 kW needs two live phases, so on a single phase home supply every XC90 T8 ever built charges at 3.7 kW. Only a three phase charge point tells the newest cars apart.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
