Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m)

On a British home supply every plug-in XC60 charges at 3.7 kW, from the 2017 Twin Engine to the newest T6 and T8 Recharge. The 16A cable delivers that in full and is the cheapest lead that does the job properly.

One exception, and it is worth knowing. An XC60 built from 2022 has a 6.4 kW two phase charger, so at a three phase charge point the three phase cable (5m / 10m) cuts a full charge from five hours to three. A 32A single phase cable never helps this car.

A Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and for eight years the answer has barely moved. Every plug-in XC60 sold here charges at 3.7 kW on a British home supply, from the 2017 T8 Twin Engine to the newest T6 and T8 Recharge, so the 16A cable is the sensible buy for the driveway.

Volvo has enlarged the battery twice and upgraded the charger once, and neither changes that. The reason is worth knowing. From 2022 the 18.8 kWh cars carry a 6.4 kW onboard charger, and Volvo describes it as a two phase unit. A British house is fed by a single phase, so the car falls back to 3.7 kW on your driveway whatever cable is plugged into it.

Where it does pay is a three phase charge point. Plug a three phase cable into one and a 2022 or newer XC60 draws the full 6.4 kW, which is three hours to full instead of five. That is the only situation in which any XC60 charges faster than 3.7 kW, which is why we sell the three phase lead alongside the 16A rather than instead of it.

The 32A single phase cable is the one that never helps here. It is rated 7.4 kW, the car takes 3.7 kW from one phase, and it finishes at the same moment as the 16A for more money. Buy it only if a full electric car is coming to the same driveway.

With a battery this size the 3 pin cable is a real option rather than a fallback. It draws 2.3 kW, is IP67 sealed and fills an 18.8 kWh car in about seven hours, which is a night on the plug.

The charge flap sits on the nearside front wing, so a wallbox on the right hand wall ends up diagonally across the car. 5m suits a matching side, 10m covers reversing in and public bays. The XC90 T8 and XC40 have their own pages and the Volvo charging cable range covers the rest. Charge times are Volvo's own figures for the 18.8 kWh car. The earlier 11.6 kWh and 10.4 kWh XC60s cap at 3.7 kW on any supply and finish in roughly three hours and two and a half hours on the 16A cable. Cold weather adds to all of them.

Which charging cable does a Volvo XC60 need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and for home use the 16A version is the right one on every model year. A British house supplies one phase, which holds any plug-in XC60 to 3.7 kW, and the 16A cable carries exactly that. The three phase cable is the upgrade worth having if your car is a 2022 or newer 18.8 kWh Recharge and you use three phase charge points.

Does the 6.4 kW charger on a newer XC60 need a different cable?

It needs a three phase one, and a three phase supply to plug it into. Volvo fitted a two phase 6.4 kW charger from 2022, so the car has to see more than one live phase before it will draw more than 3.7 kW. At home it cannot, and no cable changes that.

Is a 32A cable worth buying for an XC60?

Not for the car itself. The 32A single phase cable carries 7.4 kW, the XC60 accepts 3.7 kW from a single phase, and both cables finish the battery at the same time. It only makes sense if a fully electric car will share the same wallbox, since that car can use the extra capacity.

How long does a Volvo XC60 Recharge take to charge?

About five hours from empty on a 3.7 kW home supply for the 18.8 kWh cars, and about three hours at a three phase point where the car reaches 6.4 kW. The older 11.6 kWh and 10.4 kWh cars are quicker simply because the battery is smaller, at roughly three hours and two and a half hours.

Can I charge an XC60 from a normal plug socket?

Yes, and on a battery this size it is a practical way to do it rather than an emergency measure. Our Type 2 to 3 Pin cable draws 2.3 kW and fills an 18.8 kWh XC60 in about seven hours, so an ordinary overnight plug-in covers a full charge.

Does a mild hybrid XC60 need a cable?

No. The B4, B5 and B6 charge their own small battery from the engine and have no charging socket at all, and the older D4, D5 and T5 do not plug in either. Only a T6 or T8 Recharge, or a T8 Twin Engine, takes a cable.

Compatibility

Only a T6 or T8 Recharge XC60 plugs in. A B4, B5 or B6 is a mild hybrid with no charging port, and neither does an older D4, D5 or T5. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

The battery grew from about 10.4 kWh to 18.8 kWh over the car's life, and in 2022 Volvo fitted a 6.4 kW onboard charger that draws two live phases. On a single phase British home supply every XC60 in this list charges at 3.7 kW, so the 16A cable covers home charging on all of them. Only a three phase charge point lets a 2022 or newer car reach 6.4 kW, and only a three phase cable delivers it.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
