Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Volvo XC40 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The Recharge plug-in hybrid is 3.6 kW and the electric XC40 is 11 kW. That is what the 22 kW cable is built for, and a workplace or commercial three-phase supply is where it pays the difference back.

Never charge anywhere but home? Then the extra phases have nothing to connect to. A domestic wallbox gives 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers exactly that.

An electric Volvo XC40 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable and accepts 11 kW on AC, on every version from the original Recharge Twin to the current car. Order the 32A single phase cable.

Three different XC40s plug in, and knowing which you have matters more here than on most cars. The all-electric XC40 Recharge was renamed EX40 in 2024, so a 2024 car and a 2021 car can be the same thing under two names. The XC40 Recharge T4 and T5 plug-in hybrid is a completely different vehicle with a 10.7 kWh battery and a 3.6 kW charger, and on that car the 16A cable charges just as fast as the 32A, so buy the cheaper one. The B3 and B4 mild hybrids do not plug in at all.

For the electric car, the 11 kW figure counts three phases. British homes are supplied with one, which carries 7.4 kW, and the 32A single phase cable passes all of it. That fills a 79 kWh Extended Range from empty in about 12 hours and returns roughly 33 miles of range for every hour on the plug. A 22 kW three-phase cable delivers exactly the same 7.4 kW at a house, and only pays where three live phases reach the socket.

The 16A is the wrong choice on the electric car. At 3.7 kW the same battery wants 24 hours from empty, which no overnight window covers.

On length, the XC40 and EX40 charge flap sits on the nearside rear, the left as you look at the boot. A wallbox on the right hand wall ends up diagonally across the car, so measure that diagonal rather than the straight line. 5m suits a matching side, 10m is the safer general choice.

The 66, 67 and 75 kWh versions charge at the same rate and simply finish sooner. The T4 and T5 plug-in hybrid is capped at 3.6 kW and fills in under three hours on the 16A cable. Winter temperatures and motorway speeds both cut the miles per hour figure.

Which cable does a Volvo XC40 need?

An electric Volvo XC40 or EX40 needs the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, which gives it the full 7.4 kW a home supply can deliver. The XC40 Recharge T4 and T5 plug-in hybrid needs only the 16A, because its charger stops at 3.6 kW and the 32A would charge it no faster.

Is the EX40 the same car as the XC40 Recharge?

Yes. Volvo renamed the all-electric XC40 Recharge to EX40 in 2024 and the charging is unchanged, so the same 32A single phase cable fits both. The petrol and mild hybrid XC40 kept its original name and does not plug in.

Does the XC40 plug-in hybrid use the same cable?

The same connector, a lower amperage. The XC40 Recharge T4 and T5 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable but its onboard charger is limited to 3.6 kW, so the 16A version delivers everything the car can accept and costs less than the 32A.

Will a 22kW cable charge a Volvo XC40 faster?

Not at a house. An electric Volvo XC40 caps at 11 kW and a single phase British supply holds it to 7.4 kW whichever cable is plugged in. Where three phases genuinely reach the socket the car takes 11 kW and a 79 kWh battery fills in about 8 hours 15 minutes instead of 12.

What length cable does a Volvo XC40 need?

The charging flap is on the nearside rear of the XC40 and EX40, so a wallbox on the opposite wall sits diagonally across the car. Measure that diagonal with the car parked as you normally leave it. 5m suits a matching side and 10m covers everything else.

Compatibility

Three different XC40s plug in, and one of them was renamed. The all-electric XC40 Recharge became the EX40 in 2024. There is also an XC40 Recharge plug-in hybrid, which is a completely different car with a much smaller battery and a much slower charger. And the B3 and B4 mild hybrids do not plug in at all.

Trim level makes no difference to charging: Core, Plus, Ultimate, Momentum, R-Design and Inscription all use the same onboard charger.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
