Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m)

From the 2013 D6 Twin Engine to the current T6 Recharge, a single phase British house holds every V60 to 3.7 kW. The 16A cable carries all of it and costs the least.

Use public charge points as well? In 2022 the battery grew and the charger with it, to 6.4 kW spread across two live phases. That is two hours off a full charge at a three phase post, using the three phase cable (5m / 10m). On one phase, every V60 sits at 3.7 kW.

A plug-in Volvo V60 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and this badge covers a wider spread of cars than most. It runs from a diesel plug-in hybrid of 2013 to a current T6 Recharge with a 19 kWh battery and 60 miles of electric range, so it is worth knowing which one you have.

At home they all land in the same place. A British house is fed by a single phase, and a single phase holds every V60 to 3.7 kW. The 16A cable carries exactly that, so it is the right buy on the driveway whichever V60 is parked on it.

The 2022 and newer cars can go faster, but only away from home. That year the pack went up to 18.8 kWh and the charger to 6.4 kW, drawing two live phases instead of one. Plug the three phase cable into a three phase charge point and the car takes all of it, which is three hours to full rather than five. A 32A single phase cable is rated higher but still carries one phase, so it changes nothing.

The oldest V60 catches people out. The D5 and D6 Twin Engine of 2013 to 2018 was a diesel plug-in hybrid, which is rare enough that owners often assume it does not plug in at all. It does, through a Type 2 inlet, and the 16A cable suits it.

An estate spends its life being loaded, so measure the run to the charge point with the tailgate up rather than with the car empty. The flap is on the nearside front wing. 5m works when you nose in on that side and 10m is the safer general choice.

These are Volvo's published times for the 18.8 kWh pack. The earlier 11.6 kWh T8 and T6 Recharge cars take about three hours on the 16A cable and cannot exceed 3.7 kW on any supply. Cold weather lengthens all of them.

Which cable does a Volvo V60 Recharge need?

The 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home charging, on every version of the car. A single phase house supply limits any V60 to 3.7 kW and the 16A delivers all of it. Add the three phase cable only for a 2022 or newer car that will see three phase charge points, where it reaches 6.4 kW.

Does the V60 D6 Twin Engine take a charging cable?

Yes. The V60 D5 and D6 Twin Engine of 2013 to 2018 was a diesel plug-in hybrid with a Type 2 charging inlet, which surprises a lot of owners. It carries about 11.2 kWh, and the 16A cable is the sensible choice for it.

Why does a 22kW cable not help my V60 at home?

Because the house is the limit, not the cable. British homes are supplied with one phase and a V60 draws 3.7 kW from one phase whatever cable is plugged in. Where three live phases reach the socket, a 2022 or newer V60 goes to 6.4 kW and the three phase cable is what carries it.

How long does a Volvo V60 Recharge take to charge?

About five hours from empty on a 3.7 kW home supply for the 18.8 kWh cars, and about three hours at a three phase point where the car reaches 6.4 kW. Older 11.6 kWh cars take around three hours simply because there is less battery to fill.

Does a B3, B4 or B5 V60 plug in?

No. Those are mild hybrids with no charging socket, and the D3, D4 diesel and T4, T5 petrol cars do not plug in either. Only a Recharge or a Twin Engine V60 takes a cable.

Compatibility

Only a Recharge or Twin Engine V60 plugs in. A B3, B4 or B5 is a mild hybrid with no charging port. Note that the early V60 D5 and D6 Twin Engine was a diesel plug-in hybrid, which surprises people. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

This badge spans a decade. What changed in 2022 was the 18.8 kWh battery and a 6.4 kW charger that pulls two live phases at once. Give it one phase, as a British house does, and it settles back to 3.7 kW, which is where every car in this list charges on a driveway. That makes the 16A the home buy, and a three phase cable at a three phase post the only route to 6.4 kW.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
