Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m)

Every Volvo S90 charges at 3.7 kW on a British home supply, whichever year it was built. The 16A cable carries all of that and is the cheapest lead that does the job properly.

The Extended Range cars are the exception. From 2022 they carry a 6.4 kW charger that wants two live phases. Feed it three at a public post using the three phase cable (5m / 10m) and the battery fills in three hours rather than five. A 32A single phase lead never gets there.

A Volvo S90 T8 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Volvo kept the same badge on the boot lid for eight years while changing the car underneath, so the year matters more than the name when you pick the amperage.

At home, every S90 charges at 3.7 kW. A British house is fed by a single phase and that is the ceiling on all of them, so the 16A cable covers home charging on any S90 ever sold here and costs the least of the three.

From 2022 the Extended Range cars behave differently at a public post. Volvo grew the battery from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh and fitted a 6.4 kW charger that draws two live phases. At a three phase charge point the three phase cable gets the car to that 6.4 kW, which is three hours to full instead of five. Nothing else reaches it, the 32A single phase cable included, because a single phase is a single phase whatever the cable is rated at.

Before 2022 the answer is simply the 16A. The 2016 to 2019 Twin Engine carries about 10.4 kWh and the 2020 to 2021 Recharge 11.6 kWh, and both cap at 3.7 kW on any supply anywhere. A dearer cable on those cars buys nothing at all.

The S90 is a used purchase now, and a car changing hands often arrives without its cable. If you are not sure which battery yours has, the model year is the quickest guide: 2022 onwards is the 18.8 kWh car.

The charge flap is on the nearside front wing, so 5m works when you nose in beside the charge point and 10m is the safer choice everywhere else. The V90 and XC60 have their own pages and the Volvo charging cable range covers the rest. Built to IEC 62196-2, CE certified, IP55 sealed, rated from -30C to +50C, two year warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

Times are Volvo's own figures for the 18.8 kWh battery. The 11.6 kWh car takes about three hours on the 16A cable and the 10.4 kWh Twin Engine about two and a half. Neither can exceed 3.7 kW on any supply.

FAQs

Volvo S90 T8 Charging Cable FAQs

Which cable should I buy for a Volvo S90 T8?

The 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home charging, on every model year. A single phase British supply holds the car to 3.7 kW and the 16A carries all of it. Add the three phase cable only if your car is a 2022 or later Extended Range and you charge at three phase posts, where it reaches 6.4 kW.

Why will a 32A cable not charge my S90 faster?

Because the limit is the car and the supply, not the cable. The S90 accepts 3.7 kW from one live phase, and a 32A single phase cable still only carries one phase. It is rated for 7.4 kW, the car will not take it, and the battery finishes at the same moment as it would on the 16A.

What is the 6.4 kW figure on a newer S90?

It is the onboard charger fitted from 2022 alongside the 18.8 kWh battery, and Volvo describes it as a two phase unit. The car has to see more than one live phase before it will draw that much, which means a three phase charge point and a three phase cable. A house cannot supply it.

How do I tell which S90 T8 I have?

By year. 2016 to 2019 is the Twin Engine with about 10.4 kWh, 2020 to 2021 is the Recharge with 11.6 kWh, and 2022 onwards is the Extended Range with 18.8 kWh. Only the last of those can go beyond 3.7 kW, and only away from home.

Does a B5 or B6 S90 need a charging cable?

No. Those are mild hybrids that charge a small battery from the engine and have no charging socket, and the older D4, D5 diesel and T4, T5 petrol cars do not plug in either. Only a T8 or T6 Recharge takes a cable.

Compatibility

Only a T8 or T6 Recharge S90 plugs in. A B4, B5 or B6 is a mild hybrid: it charges itself and has no charging port. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

Volvo raised the battery twice under the same badge. The 2022 Extended Range car brought an onboard charger rated 6.4 kW, built to draw two live phases at once. A British house has one phase, so every S90 listed below charges at 3.7 kW on a driveway. The 16A cable is the home answer on all of them, and the three phase cable is what unlocks 6.4 kW at a public post.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
