Product Description

These are Type 1 tethered charging cables, supplied for permanent attachment to a home charging station. They are meant for fitting by a professional charge point installer, not for plugging in and out yourself.

The word tethered is what separates this from an ordinary charging lead. A tethered cable lives on the wallbox. It is wired into the unit at one end and finishes in a Type 1 connector at the other, so the only thing you ever handle is the plug that goes into the car. Nothing is coiled away afterwards, nothing sits in the boot, and on a dark winter evening in the garage that difference is felt every single night.

Type 1 is the connector fitted to a generation of electric cars and plug in hybrids sold before Type 2 became the UK standard. It is a five pin single phase design. That single phase construction sets a hard physical ceiling of 7.4 kW, so no Type 1 cable, tethered or portable, can carry three phase power. If your car has a Type 1 inlet this is the cable you need. If it has a Type 2 inlet, our Type 2 tethered cables are the correct choice.

Both lengths are rated at 32A. Choose 5m where the charging station is mounted close to where you park, and 10m where the unit sits further off, the drive is long, or the inlet on the car faces away from the wall. Worth measuring properly before ordering, because a tethered cable cannot be swapped for a longer one without another visit from an electrician.

Between charges the cable needs somewhere to sit. Leaving it coiled on a garage floor puts the connector in whatever water and grit gathers there, so a wall bracket beside the unit is a sensible companion purchase. Hung up, the lead drains, dries and stays clear of feet and tyres.

There is a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and UK delivery is free on the next working day.

FAQs

Type 1 Tethered Charging Cable FAQs

What is a tethered Type 1 cable?

It is a charging cable permanently attached to a home charging station rather than carried loose. The unit keeps the cable, you keep the plug end ready to go into the car. That removes the nightly routine of unwinding a lead, plugging in twice and coiling it back up afterwards.

Can I fit one myself?

No. These cables are supplied for professional EV charging station installers. Fitting means terminating the cable inside the charge point, which is electrical work on a wired in appliance. Contact the company that installed your unit, or another qualified installer, and have them do it properly.

Which end connects to the car?

The Type 1 connector is the car end. The opposite end has no plug at all, because it is wired directly into the charging station during fitting. That is why a tethered cable arrives with only one connector on it, and why it cannot be used as a portable lead between two sockets.

Do I still need a portable cable as well?

Almost certainly, yes. Public charging posts have sockets rather than fixed leads, so away from home you plug in your own cable. The tethered unit handles your overnight charging at the house. A portable Type 1 lead in the boot covers workplaces, car parks and destination chargers.

Is there a three phase or 22 kW Type 1 cable?

No, and there never will be. Type 1 is a five pin single phase connector, so 7.4 kW is its physical limit by design. Any listing offering a three phase Type 1 cable is describing something that does not exist. A car with a Type 1 inlet cannot draw three phase AC power.

How do I pick between 5m and 10m?

Work out where the car's inlet sits when parked as you normally leave it, then measure to the wall unit and add slack. Five metres is fine for a station beside the bay. Ten metres suits a longer drive or an inlet on the far side of the car. Getting it changed later means paying an electrician again.

Sizing guide
  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
