The Tesla Model Y accepts up to 11 kW on AC. A 22 kW lead covers the quickest version built and is the one to bring to a three-phase post.

Charging on your own driveway only? Domestic supply here is single phase and caps the car at 7.4 kW. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers that in full and costs less.

Every UK Tesla Model Y, from the first 2022 cars to the current Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium Long Range and Performance, charges through a Type 2 inlet at up to 11 kW AC. A Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable fits all of them, and on a UK home charger the car draws 7.4 kW. Tesla's own onboard charger page gives both figures: 7.4 kW at 32A on a single phase supply, 11 kW at 16A per phase on three phase. The battery size changes how long a charge takes, not how fast the car will accept it.

What makes the Model Y different from most electric vehicles is how long an owner can go without needing a cable at all. Superchargers and every other rapid charger have the lead attached, so the boot can stay empty for months, right up to the day a home wallbox is fitted or a Type 2 post at a hotel or a friend's house is the only option. That is the day this page exists for.

Which Tesla Model Y charging cable to buy

Full speed at home: the 32A single phase cable. Listed in our menu as 32amp (7.2kW), it carries the 7.4 kW Tesla quotes for single phase charging, which is also the most a British house can supply, so it takes a Model Y to its home ceiling. It also works on a 16A charger without any fuss, so it is the future proof buy if you might change wallbox or car. Works, but no faster at home: the 32A three phase cable. Plugged into a house it gives you 7.4 kW and not a watt more, because the two extra phases have nothing to connect to. It only pays where a genuine three phase feed exists, usually a workplace, where the car pulls its full 11 kW and a 79 kWh Performance drops from 12 hours to 8. Too slow for this battery: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), at 3.7 kW a 75 kWh Long Range takes 23 hours instead of 11 hours 30 minutes, and a seven hour cheap rate window puts back about 133 miles instead of about 266. On a car this size the cheaper lead decides whether you charge on the night tariff or the day rate.

Amperage settled, cable length turns on where the charging port is. Tesla puts it on the left rear of the car, behind a door in the tail light assembly, and the Model Y is 4.8 metres long. Back in with the wallbox on the passenger side and the 5 metre cable reaches with room to spare. Park nose in, charge at the kerb, or have the wallbox on the far side of the house, and the lead has to travel the length of the car, which is where 10 metres earns its price. The 15 metre and 20 metre versions are for shared parking, a detached garage, or a charger fitted at the front of a long drive. Online guides often settle on 7 metres as the ideal cable length; we make 5m to 20m, and the 10 metre covers every situation a 7 metre would with slack to spare.

Do not count on the lead in the boot. Tesla states on its UK support pages that the Mobile Connector is not included with new vehicle orders, and has not been since April 2022. UK owners generally report a Type 2 cable in the boot of a new Model Y and nothing else, but Tesla publishes no promise about it and used cars often arrive with neither. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable does the job the Mobile Connector used to do, and is what most people mean by a granny charger: 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket, IP67 sealed, about 11 miles of range an hour, with a built in RCD and adjustable current. It is a backup for a night away rather than a daily charger.

The Type 2 to Type 2 cable is built to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, IP55 rated for weather resistance, above the IP54 usually recommended for a cable left outdoors, and works from -30C to +50C. The Type 2 to 3-Pin is CE marked, IP67 rated and works from -30C to +60C. Most cables on the market carry a one year warranty; both of ours carry a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, with free next working day UK delivery and a 30 day return if it turns out not to fit.

The 2022 to 2024 Rear-Wheel Drive, about 57 kWh usable and 283 miles WLTP, sits just under those figures at 8 hours 45 minutes on the 32A cable. Tesla does not publish battery capacities, so every kWh figure here is an independent measurement and the times are approximate. Tesla has also renamed trims mid-life, Long Range to Premium and Standard to Rear-Wheel Drive, without changing the AC rate. Frost and motorway pace both reduce what you actually get back per hour.

Does the new Tesla Model Y come with a charging cable in the UK?

Not a Mobile Connector. Tesla's UK support page states it is not included with new vehicle orders, and it has been sold separately since April 2022. UK owners taking delivery of a Model Y in 2025 and 2026 generally report a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in the boot and nothing else, but Tesla publishes no guarantee of that, and a used Model Y frequently arrives with no cable at all. Check the boot before the wallbox installer arrives.

Which cable is right for a Tesla Model Y on a home charger?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A UK home charger runs on a single phase supply at 7.4 kW, Tesla quotes 7.4 kW at 32A for the Model Y on single phase, and this cable carries all of it. Load balancing, scheduling and tariff control all live in the wallbox, not the cable, so the same cable works with an Ohme, a Zappi, a Pod Point or a Tesla Wall Connector fitted with a socket.

Will a three phase 22kW cable make a Tesla Model Y charge faster?

Only where three phases genuinely reach the socket. A Tesla Model Y accepts 11 kW at most on AC, and on a British single phase supply the three phase cable delivers the same 7.4 kW as the 32A single phase lead. At a workplace with a three phase feed it takes a 79 kWh Performance from 12 hours to 8, which is the only case where the extra cost buys anything.

Can I use the same cable at public charging stations?

Yes, at any untethered Type 2 AC post, which is most of the destination and on-street chargers in the UK and Europe. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable from the wallbox at home is the one you carry for those. Rapid DC chargers, including Superchargers, are tethered, so they have their own cable attached and need nothing from the boot.

How long does a Tesla Model Y take to charge at home?

From empty on a 7.4 kW home charger: about 12 hours for a 79 kWh Premium Long Range AWD or Performance, 11 hours 30 minutes for a 75 kWh Long Range, and 9 hours 15 minutes for the 60 kWh Rear-Wheel Drive. Most owners plug in with a third or more left, so a seven hour overnight window at 7.4 kW puts back roughly 260 miles on any version.

What length of cable does a Tesla Model Y need?

The charging port is on the left rear of a car 4.8 metres long. If you reverse in and the wallbox is on that side, 5 metres reaches comfortably. Nose in, kerbside, or a wallbox across the drive means the cable runs the length of the car and back, and 10 metres is the safe choice. 15 and 20 metres are for shared parking or a charger a long way from where the car sits.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
