Product Description

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the correct choice for the 918 Spyder. The onboard charger is rated at 3.6 kW and the battery holds 6.8 kWh, so a 16A lead already matches what the car can accept.

The 32A cable fits the same socket and is perfectly safe to use, but it will not shorten a charge by a single minute. The car, not the cable, sets the rate. Buy it only if you want one lead that also serves a newer, faster car in the same household.

Porsche built 918 cars between 2013 and 2015. UK and European examples use a Type 2 inlet, which was already the European standard when the car was launched, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right shape. North American cars were fitted with Type 1 instead. If you have imported one, this cable will not connect to it and you need a Type 1 lead.

The Weissach Package changes nothing electrical. Battery, charger and connector are identical, so the same 16A cable applies.

From empty, a 16A cable fills the pack in roughly two and a quarter hours. A Type 2 to 3 Pin lead pulls 2.3 kW from an ordinary domestic socket and takes a little over three hours, which is a practical option given how small the battery is.

The 22 kW three phase cable has no use here. Homes in Britain are supplied with a single phase, so a domestic charge point cannot go beyond 7.4 kW, and the 918 stops at 3.6 kW in any case. The charge rate is always the lowest of three figures: the car, the supply and the cable.

Porsche also offered a bespoke Speed Charging Station with the car. That was a DC unit built for the 918 rather than anything on the public network, and it has no bearing on which AC cable you buy.

Which cable does a Porsche 918 Spyder need?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. UK and European cars have a Type 2 inlet and a 3.6 kW onboard charger, and 16A delivers 3.7 kW, which is more than the car will draw. With only 6.8 kWh to fill, that is a complete charge in about two and a quarter hours.

Is a 32A cable any faster on a 918 Spyder?

No. The 918 accepts 3.6 kW and nothing above it, so a 32A cable delivers exactly the same charge in exactly the same two and a quarter hours. It is a sensible purchase only if the same cable will also be used on a newer car that can draw 7.4 kW.

How long does a 918 Spyder take to charge?

About two hours fifteen minutes from empty on a home charge point, since the 6.8 kWh battery fills at 3.6 kW. A Type 2 to 3 Pin lead from a standard 13A socket runs at 2.3 kW and needs roughly three hours fifteen minutes, which is still an overnight job at worst.

Does the Weissach Package change the charging?

No. The Weissach cars carry the same 6.8 kWh battery, the same Type 2 socket and the same 3.6 kW onboard charger as a standard 918 Spyder. The package alters weight and trim rather than the electrical system, so the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is again the one to order.

Why does an imported 918 have a different plug?

Cars built for North America were fitted with a Type 1 inlet, which has five pins and a different shape. A Type 2 cable will not physically connect to one. If your 918 came from the United States or Canada, order a Type 1 lead rather than anything listed on this page.

What cable length suits a Porsche 918 Spyder?

Five metres is usually ample for a car kept in a garage with a wall box on the same wall. Ten metres is worth having if the charge point is at the far end of a workshop, or the car shares space with others and cannot always take the same bay.

Compatibility

Porsche built exactly 918 of these between 2013 and 2015, and DVLA records suggest somewhere around forty to fifty have been UK-registered at any one time, so if you have one you already know it is a rare thing. For charging it is refreshingly simple. UK and European cars use a Type 2 socket, because Type 2 was already the European standard by 2013, and the onboard charger is 3.6 kW. The battery is only 6.8 kWh, so a 16A cable will fill it comfortably and a larger one will not make it any quicker. Porsche also sold a bespoke Speed Charging Station as an option, which was a DC unit specific to the car rather than anything you will find on the public network.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
