Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Mini Electric accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The 22 kW cable matches the highest rate the model reaches, and a three-phase supply is where that rate is actually reachable.

If it only ever charges at home, buy down. A house supply is single phase, so the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) hands over every watt of it.

Every MINI Electric sold in the UK charges through a Type 2 inlet and accepts 11 kW on AC, so one MINI Electric charging cable in Type 2 to Type 2 covers the 2020 to 2023 Cooper SE, the 2024 Cooper E and the 2024 Cooper SE alike, and on a British home wallbox each of them settles at 7.4 kW. What shapes this page is not the 11 kW but the pack behind it. At 28.9 kWh usable the 2020 to 2023 car carries about a third of the battery a family EV does. Small packs fill fast: from empty on the 32A cable the 2020 to 2023 Cooper SE takes 4 hours 30 minutes, a Cooper E 5 hours 30 minutes and the 2024 Cooper SE 7 hours 30 minutes, so all three fit inside a seven hour off peak window. That makes amperage the easy question here and length the important one.

Choosing a MINI Electric charging cable for home charging

The one to buy is the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Our menu names it 32amp (7.2kW) and it carries 7.4 kW, the ceiling for a property fed by a single live phase, which is nearly every UK home. That is the figure behind the times above, and it puts back about 37 miles of range for each hour plugged in. The 32A three phase cable buys nothing on a driveway. Sold as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it is the dearest lead here and a MINI will not draw more than 11 kW from it anyway. Its two extra conductors need a real three phase feed, which in practice means the charging stations at a workplace or a car park, and there a 2024 Cooper SE finishes in 5 hours rather than 7 hours 30 minutes. At a house it hands over the same 7.4 kW as the cheaper cable. The 16A cable is the one that costs you the tariff. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it pins any MINI to 3.7 kW, stretching those same charges to 8 hours 45 minutes, 11 hours 15 minutes and 15 hours. That is the case against it on a car this small: 3.7 kW cannot take a MINI from flat to full inside a cheap rate window and 7.4 kW can, so the cheaper lead is the one thing here that pushes part of your charging onto the day rate.

With the amperage settled, length is the real decision, and the MINI makes it an unusual one. The car is 3.86 metres long, short enough to change the answer, and the charge flap sits high on the rear wing on the right, where a petrol MINI keeps its fuel filler. Left in the obvious spot on a drive, the socket sits within a couple of metres of the wall unit, so the 5 metre lead does more work here than on a larger electric car. The catch is that a car this small is often not left in the obvious spot: second in the queue behind something larger, angled in at the end of a drive, or kept at the kerb outside a terrace. In each of those the plug has moved a long way from the wallbox, which is the job of the 10 metre version. The 15 metre and 20 metre cables come in 32A single phase and cover a residents' bay, a garage set back from the house or a charger at the far end of a long drive. Measure from the wall unit to the rear right wing with the car where you actually leave it; the answer moves by metres depending on which way it faces.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is the lead for the nights when there is no wallbox at all, and for the weeks before one is installed. The MINI Flexible Fast Charger, MINI's own 3 pin plug lead, is an optional extra rather than standard equipment, so many MINIs are handed over with no way of charging from an ordinary socket. Ours shows in the menu as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), draws 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket and adds roughly 12 miles of range an hour, which counts for more on a battery this size: an evening parked at a relative's house is worth 60 or 70 miles, and a 2020 to 2023 Cooper SE fills from empty in 14 hours 15 minutes. There is a Type B RCD in the control box, the current winds back to 6 amps where the wiring is old, and IP67 sealing lets it work from an outdoor socket in the wet.

Capacities are MINI's net figures; the gross numbers are 32.6, 40.7 and 54.2 kWh. WLTP varies with wheels and trim: MINI UK quotes 179 to 185 miles for the Cooper E and 239 to 247 for the current Cooper SE, so the tables take the top of each band and a car on big wheels sits below it. Both the miles per hour and the totals fall away in cold weather and at motorway speeds.

Which charging cable suits a MINI Electric best?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in the shortest length that reaches the car. A MINI Electric draws 7.4 kW from a UK home wallbox and this cable carries all of it, filling the 2020 to 2023 Cooper SE from empty in about 4 hours 30 minutes and the 2024 Cooper SE in about 7 hours 30 minutes. The same lead plugs into untethered Type 2 public charging points in UK car parks and on streets, and is compatible with home EV chargers of every make sold here, so it is the only MINI charging cable most owners need.

Will a MINI Electric charge from empty in one off peak window?

Yes, on the 32A single phase cable. Seven hours at 7.4 kW covers the 4 hours 30 minutes a 2020 to 2023 MINI Cooper SE needs, the 5 hours 30 minutes a Cooper E needs and the 7 hours 30 minutes of the 2024 Cooper SE, and that last figure assumes a completely flat battery, which almost never happens. Plug a MINI in with a third of the pack left and it is full well before the cheap rate ends: recharging a 2024 Cooper SE from a third takes about 5 hours.

Is the 16A cable a false economy on a MINI Electric?

On this car it is. A 16A cable holds a MINI Electric at 3.7 kW, so the 2020 to 2023 Cooper SE needs 8 hours 45 minutes, a Cooper E 11 hours 15 minutes and the 2024 Cooper SE 15 hours, all of which overrun a seven hour off peak window and finish on daytime electricity. It also returns about 19 miles of range an hour instead of 37, which halves what an hour parked at home is worth.

Do the MINI Cooper E and Cooper SE need different charging cables?

No. The MINI Cooper E and the MINI Cooper SE share the same 11 kW onboard charger power and a Type 2 inlet, so both use the same 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable and both gain about 37 miles of range an hour on it. Only the battery differs, 36.6 kWh usable against 49.2 kWh, which is 5 hours 30 minutes against 7 hours 30 minutes from empty on a home charger.

Is a 22kW three phase cable any use to a MINI Electric owner?

Only to an owner who parks on a three phase supply, which almost no house has. A MINI Electric is capped at 11 kW, so the 22 kW cable can never deliver its full rating to this car, and on a domestic wallbox it passes 7.4 kW exactly as the 32A single phase lead does. Where three live phases reach the socket it becomes a sensible purchase: a 2024 MINI Cooper SE drops from 7 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours, and the 2020 to 2023 car to 3 hours.

How many metres of cable does a MINI Electric need?

5 metres suits most MINI Electric owners, because the car is only 3.86 metres long and the charge flap is on the rear wing on the right, so on a normal drive the socket finishes up close to the wall unit. Order 10 metres if the MINI sits behind another car, parks at the kerb, or is charged from a wallbox on the far side of the drive.   • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
