Product Description

A Mercedes GLC 300e charging cable has more work in front of it than most plug-in hybrid cables. The current X254 car, on sale since 2023, holds 25.28 kWh usable from a 31.2 kWh gross pack and covers 77 miles on electricity alone, a bigger usable battery than several city cars sold as full EVs. It accepts 11 kW on AC as standard, and that combination is what makes the cable choice matter here.

Every Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, X254 and the older X253 alike. Petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid GLCs have no socket at all. The separate GLC with EQ Technology is a fully electric car, a different vehicle, and not what this page is about.

The GLC 300 de, the diesel plug-in hybrid rated at 74 miles of electric range, uses the identical cable, so every recommendation below applies to it just as it does to the petrol 300e.

What 77 miles of electric range actually needs overnight

Eleven kilowatts is a three-phase measurement. A British house is fed by a single phase, which holds the GLC 300e to 7.4 kW at home, and a 32A single-phase Type 2 cable passes every watt of that through. From empty the X254 is full in 3 hours 45 mins and puts back about 23 miles for each hour it stays connected. On a 25.28 kWh pack those numbers are the difference between plugging in and actually running on electricity.

Drop to a 16A cable and the current GLC 300e is pegged at 3.7 kW. Empty to full goes from 3 hours 45 mins out to 7 hours 45 mins, and the hourly gain roughly halves to 11 miles. Most off-peak tariff windows run five or six hours: the 32A cable clears the entire battery inside one, the 16A cable finishes about a quarter short every night, and on a car this heavy that shortfall gets made up by the engine.

Where a genuine three-phase supply exists, usually a workplace or a commercial site, the X254 reaches its full 11 kW and completes in 2 hours 30 mins. At a normal house a three-phase cable simply has two phases with nowhere to connect. Mercedes-Benz UK does publish a DC rapid capability for the current car, but rapid units come with their own attached lead, so it has no bearing on which cable you buy.

The 2020 to 2022 GLC 300e is a different proposition

The X253 GLC 300e ran 13.5 kWh and about 28 miles of electric range, close to a third of what the current car carries. Mercedes-Benz does not split that figure into gross and usable. It charges at 7.4 kW single phase, so the 32A cable is still the right buy and fills it from empty in 2 hours flat, but a three-phase cable adds nothing because the car cannot reach beyond 7.4 kW on any supply. A 16A cable doubles that to 4 hours, which is survivable on a battery this size in a way it is not on the newer one.

Both generations put the charge port at the rear, on its own flap separate from the fuel filler, so it is not something that changes between model years. What changes is how you park. Reverse the GLC onto a driveway with the wallbox near the house and 5m is plenty. Park nose in and the cable has to run the full 4.72m of the car before it reaches the flap, which is the point at which 10m stops being a luxury. 15m and 20m exist for shared parking and detached garages.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable feeds either GLC 300e at 2.3 kW. On the current car that is 7 miles an hour and 12 hours 30 mins from empty, so a household socket cannot realistically keep a 25.28 kWh pack topped up night after night. Its value is away from home, at family for a weekend or a holiday let with an outdoor socket and nothing else, where 12 hours parked up still returns a full battery. It is IP67 sealed for outdoor use.

The 2020 to 2022 times are based on the 13.5 kWh figure because Mercedes-Benz does not publish a usable capacity for that car, so they read slightly optimistic. The 2023 on times use the published 25.28 kWh usable capacity. The figure comes down in winter and at sustained high speed.

What length cable does a Mercedes GLC 300e need?

Work out the distance from your socket to the rear of the GLC 300e as it normally parks, on the side the charge flap sits. The GLC is 4.72m long, so parking nose in towards a wallbox on the house wall means the cable travels the length of the car and 10m becomes the realistic choice. Reverse onto the drive and 5m generally reaches. 15m and 20m cover shared parking areas and detached garages.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
