Product Description

The CLA 250+ holds 85 kWh and is certified at 480 miles, and a battery of that size is what makes the cable decision worth a minute of your time. Refilling it at home is a long job measured in hours, not minutes, so the amperage you order decides whether a full charge fits inside a night or runs on into the following afternoon.

One thing to confirm before you order. Only a CLA badged with EQ Technology has a charging inlet, because Mercedes sells mild-hybrid CLA 180, CLA 200 and CLA 220 models that share the name and the bodyshell but plug into nothing. If your V5C or your order form carries EQ Technology, this page is about your car.

Three electric versions are sold here and all of them use the same cable, a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The CLA 200 with EQ Technology has 58 kWh usable and 328 miles WLTP, the CLA 250+ has 85 kWh usable, 90 gross, and 480 miles, and the CLA 350 4MATIC shares that 85 kWh pack at 447 miles. The inlet sits at the rear of the car on the offside, the right hand side as you stand behind the boot, and it takes Type 2 for AC with CCS pins below.

Now the figure that causes the most trouble. Every electric Mercedes CLA is limited to 11 kW on AC. There is no 22 kW onboard charger in the UK range, not standard and not as an option, on any of the three variants. Mercedes' own UK accessory listing advertises a charging cable up to 22 kW, and that rating belongs to the cable rather than to the car, so a three-phase lead buys a CLA owner nothing at all.

Even the 11 kW is a three-phase figure, and the electricity board delivers a single phase to a British house, which holds the car to 7.4 kW behind a driveway wallbox. That is exactly what our 1-Phase, 32A cable passes: 8 hours 45 mins from empty on the 58 kWh CLA 200, about 13 hours on an 85 kWh CLA 250+, and roughly 42 miles of range for every hour the car stays plugged in. The three-phase version only earns its price at a workplace or an untethered 22 kW post, where the CLA takes its full 11 kW and the 85 kWh car finishes in 8 hours 45 mins.

A 16A cable is the wrong buy on a battery this size. Held to 3.7 kW, the CLA 200 needs 17 hours 45 mins from empty and the 85 kWh cars 26 hours, so neither fits a night, let alone a cheap-rate window. Whatever you save on the cable comes back as charges you have to break off half finished.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is worth having as the second cable rather than the first. From a 13A socket it draws 2.3 kW, about thirteen miles of range an hour, so an overnight stay somewhere with no charge point puts back roughly 170 miles. On a car this size that is a top-up, not a fill, but it is the difference between arriving somewhere and being stuck there.

On length, the rear offside flap means a wallbox on the house wall usually finishes up diagonally across the car from the socket. Measure that diagonal rather than the straight-line distance. Reverse onto a driveway with the unit on the right and 5m is comfortable. Park nose in, or put the box on the left, and 10m is the honest answer for a car of this length. The Shooting Brake, offered in CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC only, takes the same lengths as the saloon. 15m and 20m are there for detached garages and long drives.

The CLA uses an 800V architecture, which is a DC story and has no bearing at all on which AC cable you buy. The saloon has been on sale since Q3 2025 and the Shooting Brake since Q1 2026. The CLA 350 4MATIC carries the same 85 kWh battery but is rated at 447 miles rather than 480, so its range added per hour is a little lower than the table shows.

Does my Mercedes CLA plug in?

Only if the badge says with EQ Technology. Mercedes sells a fully electric CLA 200 with EQ Technology and, alongside it, a 48V mild-hybrid petrol CLA 200 with no charging socket at all, plus mild-hybrid CLA 180 and CLA 220 models. The mild hybrids have no inlet and cannot use a charging cable of any type.

Which charging cable does an electric Mercedes CLA need?

The 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2, which hands the car the full 7.4 kW a home supply can give. One cable answers for the CLA 200, the CLA 250+ and the CLA 350 4MATIC, since the onboard charger is the same 11 kW unit in all three and the difference between them is only how many hours the battery takes to fill.

Can a Mercedes CLA charge at 22kW?

No. The AC ceiling is 11 kW and Mercedes offers nothing higher in the UK, either as standard equipment or as a paid option. The confusion comes from Mercedes' own accessory listing, which describes a charging cable up to 22 kW. That number describes what the lead can carry, not what the car will accept, and it will not take a single minute off a CLA charge.

Do the CLA 200 and CLA 250+ charge at the same speed?

They pull at the same rate, because both are capped at 11 kW, and they differ only in the size of the tank being filled. Behind a 7.4 kW home supply the 58 kWh CLA 200 is done in about 8 hours 45 mins, while the 85 kWh CLA 250+ wants about 13 hours for the same job from empty.

How long does a Mercedes CLA take to charge at home?

Empty to full at 7.4 kW on the 32A single-phase cable, reckon on about 8 hours 45 mins for the 58 kWh CLA 200 and about 13 hours for the 85 kWh CLA 250+ or CLA 350 4MATIC. Order 16A instead and those become 17 hours 45 mins and 26 hours, which no overnight window will cover.

What length cable does a Mercedes CLA need?

Measure to the rear offside of the car, the right hand corner as you look at the boot, since that is where the Mercedes CLA's charging flap sits. A wallbox on that side of a driveway is usually within 5m. A unit on the opposite wall, or a car parked nose in, is where 10m starts to matter. The Shooting Brake takes the same lengths as the saloon.

Read the badge before you buy. Only a CLA carrying the with EQ Technology suffix plugs in. The CLA 180, CLA 200 and CLA 220 mild-hybrid petrol cars share the same bodyshell and, in the case of the CLA 200, the same number, but have no charging inlet at all. On the electric cars the onboard charger is 11 kW on all three variants, with no 22 kW option sold in the UK, and a single-phase British home supply limits them to 7.4 kW, which the 32A single-phase cable delivers in full.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
