The Mercedes-Benz EQC accepts up to 11 kW on AC. That is what the 22 kW cable is built for, and a workplace or commercial three-phase supply is where it pays the difference back.

Never charge anywhere but home? Then the extra phases have nothing to connect to. A domestic wallbox gives 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers exactly that.

Every Mercedes-Benz EQC sold in Britain is the EQC 400 4MATIC, it takes its AC charge through a Type 2 inlet, and on a domestic wall box it pulls 7.4 kW whatever year it was built. A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead is therefore the Mercedes EQC charging cable to order for home use, across the 2019 to 2023 run. The build date changes the ceiling away from the house and nothing on your driveway. Cars made up to November 2020 carry a 7.4 kW single phase onboard charger, and Mercedes replaced it with an 11 kW three phase unit as standard equipment in November 2020, cutting its own quoted 10 to 100 percent AC figure from 11 hours to 7 hours 30 minutes. Neither car can exceed 7.4 kW from a British house, and 80 kWh of usable battery at 7.4 kW works out at 12 hours 15 minutes from flat. No off-peak tariff runs that long. That is what this page turns on: an EQC is topped up rather than filled overnight, so the rating worth paying for is the one that banks the most miles inside a seven hour window.

Which Mercedes EQC charging cable earns its price

Banks about 168 miles a window: the 32A single phase cable. Our menu lists it as 32amp (7.2kW). It moves 7.4 kW, which is what a domestic charge point puts out and the highest AC figure an EQC will take from one. That is roughly 24 miles of range for every hour connected, so seven hours on a night tariff returns about 168 miles, and empty to full lands at 12 hours 15 minutes. Halves it: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it caps the EQC at 3.7 kW and about 12 miles an hour, so the same seven hours give back 84 miles rather than 168 and a fill from empty stretches to 24 hours 30 minutes. On an 80 kWh pack that difference decides whether you finish on the cheap rate or run into the day rate. Pays away from home, and only on a later car: the 32A three phase cable. Listed as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). A 22 kW rating counts on three live phases arriving at the socket, and a British house is wired for one, so the spare cores in this lead sit idle and an EQC takes 7.4 kW from it. On a real three phase feed, a workplace bay or a 22 kW post on the street, an EQC built from November 2020 draws its full 11 kW and finishes in 8 hours 15 minutes. An earlier EQC is held to 7.4 kW even there by its own onboard charger, so on those cars the three phase cable buys nothing anywhere.

Length is set by a large body with the socket at the back. The EQC is 4.76 metres long and the charge flap sits on the right hand rear wing, the offside on a UK car. Back onto a drive with the charge point on that side and 5 metres has slack. Arrive front first, or keep the unit near the house while the EQC stops at the far end of the drive, and the lead has to run almost the full length of the car before it starts to climb, which is the case for the 10 metre. The 15 metre and 20 metre lengths suit a charge point fitted inside a garage while the car sits on the apron outside it, a shared parking space a couple of bays along from the socket, or a post at the top of a long track. Unsure? A longer cable stows in the boot, a short one leaves the vehicle out of reach. Follow the route the cable actually takes, around the car and off the ground, not the straight line across the drive.

The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable has a narrow but real job on a car this size. From a 13 amp socket it draws 2.3 kW, about 7 miles of range an hour on an EQC, so a night on it is worth roughly 50 miles and a fill from empty would run to 39 hours 15 minutes. Nobody should plan an EQC's week around it. What it covers is a weekend at a house with only a socket in an outbuilding, a hotel with no post, or the weeks between collection and a wall box being signed off. On a used EQC that arrives with no leads it is what gets the car moving on day one. It is made to IEC 62752, sealed to IP67, rated from -30C to +60C, carries a Type B RCD in its control box, and its current can be dialled between 6 and 12 amps for older wiring.

The capacity above is the EV Database measurement of 80 kWh usable from an 85 kWh pack, and the mileages are WLTP figures published as a band that shifted with wheel size, so the times and the miles per hour are best case. Mercedes announced the 11 kW charger in November 2020 without publishing a UK build cut-off, so on a used car close to that date ask for the specification rather than assuming. Expect less than these figures in cold weather and after a fast motorway stint.

What is the best charging cable for a Mercedes EQC?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right cable for every Mercedes EQC, in whichever length reaches. The car accepts 7.4 kW from a UK home charger, this cable carries all of that power, and it puts about 24 miles of range into the vehicle for each hour it is plugged in. It is equally happy on a 16A charge point, and it is the lead to keep in the boot for public Type 2 posts, which are untethered and expect the driver to bring their own. Rapid DC chargers come with a tethered cable already attached.

How do I tell which onboard charger my EQC has?

By build date. A Mercedes EQC built up to November 2020 has a 7.4 kW single phase onboard charger, and cars built from November 2020 have an 11 kW three phase unit that Mercedes fitted as standard. If the paperwork does not say, the 32A single phase cable is the correct choice either way, because it delivers all the power a house can send and the home answer does not move.

Would a 22kW three phase cable speed up a Mercedes EQC?

Not at a house, and on an early car not anywhere. A 22kW cable needs three phases at the socket to do anything a 32A single phase lead cannot, and a house has one, so a Mercedes EQC plugged into a domestic wall box takes 7.4 kW from either. At a real three phase supply an EQC built from November 2020 takes 11 kW and finishes in 8 hours 15 minutes instead of 12 hours 15 minutes, while a car built before that is still capped at 7.4 kW by its own charger. For an EQC that only ever charges at home, the purchase adds cost and no speed.

How much range does a Mercedes EQC add in a seven hour off-peak window?

About 168 miles with the 32A single phase cable at 7.4 kW, against about 84 miles on the 16A cable at 3.7 kW. A Mercedes EQC needs 12 hours 15 minutes to go from empty to full at 7.4 kW, longer than any overnight cheap rate slot on offer, so owners plug in most nights from part full rather than running the 80 kWh pack down and refilling it in one session. EV charging at home is billed by the kilowatt hour, so the miles banked inside the window are what the cable choice is really worth.

Is a 3 pin cable any use on an 80 kWh Mercedes EQC?

Yes, as a backup rather than a routine. A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, often sold as a portable charger or granny lead, gives a Mercedes EQC 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket, roughly 7 miles of range an hour, so an overnight stay adds around 50 miles and a charge from empty would take 39 hours 15 minutes. It is not ideal for an electric car carrying 80 kWh, but it is what charges one where nothing else will. Keep it for somewhere with no charge point, plug it straight into a wall socket rather than through an extension cable or reel, and leave the daily work to the wall box.

What cable length does a Mercedes EQC need on a driveway?

Enough to reach the offside rear wing of a 4.76 metre SUV. Reversed in alongside the charge point, 5 metres does it. Nose first, at a kerb, or with the unit on the opposite side of the drive, the cable travels the length of the Mercedes EQC and 10 metres is the order that will not disappoint. The 15 and 20 metre versions are for shared bays, a long drive, or a charge point mounted well away from where the car comes to rest. Measure to the wall charger along the ground the cable will follow, depending on how the EQC is normally parked.

Compatibility

The EQC's charging speed changed part-way through production, and the badge did not. Cars built up to November 2020 charge at 7.4 kW. Cars built from December 2020 charge at 11 kW. If you are not sure which you have, the 32A cable is right either way, because it charges at whatever rate the car accepts.

The EQC 400 4MATIC was the only EQC sold in the UK. Trim and line make no difference to charging.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
