Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Mercedes A250e accepts up to 7.4 kW on AC. The 32A single-phase cable meets that figure exactly. Anything dearer adds capacity the onboard charger will simply refuse.

Every Mercedes A 250 e, hatchback and saloon, plugs in through a Type 2 inlet, so a Mercedes A250e charging cable means a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and the car accepts 7.4 kW of AC up to the 2023 update and 11 kW after it. On a British domestic supply both of those come out as the same 7.4 kW, which is why the 32A single phase cable is the right buy for either car. Mercedes gave 7.4 kW and 1 hour 45 minutes from 10 to 100 percent when the A 250 e was launched, and UK fleet coverage of the 2023 update quotes an 11 kW onboard charger and a 75 minute AC charge. What did not change is the 15.6 kWh battery, or the amount of power a house can push through a wall box. So the spec sheet moved mid-life and the shopping decision did not: two tables below, and one recommendation that covers every A-Class that charges.

Choosing a Mercedes A250e charging cable

Full speed at home: the 32A single phase lead. Our menu labels it 32amp (7.2kW); it carries 7.4 kW, which is both the whole output of a home EV charger and the AC ceiling of a pre-2023 A 250 e. From flat that is about 2 hours 30 minutes, roughly 20 miles of electric range for every hour plugged in on the early car and about 24 miles an hour on the 2023 model. Costs you time: the 16A cable. Labelled 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car to 3.7 kW and stretches the same empty to full to 4 hours 45 minutes. Overnight nobody notices. It shows up on the evening you arrive home flat at six, want the battery back for a second trip at eight, and get half of one instead. Buys nothing at home: the 32A three phase cable. Our menu calls it 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). A house has a single phase feed, so two of the three power cores in that lead have nothing to connect to and the A 250 e charges at 7.4 kW exactly as it does on the cheaper cable. Where three phases actually reach the socket, an office car park or a 22 kW street post, a 2023 car will pull its full 11 kW and finish in 1 hour 30 minutes. On a pre-2023 A 250 e the same post still gives 7.4 kW, because the car itself will take no more.

Length is set by the flap. Mercedes put the A 250 e socket in the right hand side wall at the rear, the offside of a UK car, and the body is 4.42 metres long as a hatchback and 4.55 metres as a saloon. Reverse onto a drive with the wall box on the driver's side and the socket stops within a couple of paces of it, so 5 metres is enough. Park nose first, or keep the wall box on the house wall while the car sits across a shared drive, and the cable has to run the length of the car before it starts climbing to the unit, which is the 10 metre job. The 15 metre and 20 metre versions exist for a garage the car never goes into, a bay two spaces down, or a charge point at the top of a long drive. Walk the route with a tape measure while the car is parked the way it usually ends up.

A 15.6 kWh battery is small enough that the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is a real option rather than a token one. It is the closest thing to a portable charger you can leave in the boot. From a 13 amp socket it draws 2.3 kW, adds 6 to 8 miles of range an hour depending on which A 250 e you have, and fills the car in about 7 hours 45 minutes, which is one night. An electric car cannot say that, and it is the one clear advantage a PHEV this size has over one. The lead is sealed to IP67, has a Type B RCD in the control box, and its current can be set between 6 and 12 amps for an older ring main. Keep it for the weekend at a cottage or the relative's driveway and let the wall box do the daily work.

Mercedes publishes 15.6 kWh as the total capacity of the A 250 e battery and no usable figure, so every time above is worked from the full 15.6 kWh and sits on the long side; the manufacturer's own quote for the earlier car is 1 hour 45 minutes from 10 to 100 percent at 7.4 kW. Electric range is the WLTP electric only figure and Mercedes gives it as a span that moves with wheels and trim, 56 to 69 km on the first cars and 70 to 82 km after the update. A cold battery and a spell at motorway speed will each cut the miles gained per hour.

Which charging cable should a Mercedes A 250 e owner buy?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in whatever length reaches. A Mercedes A 250 e charges at 7.4 kW from a home charger whichever model year it is, this cable carries all 7.4 kW, and it fills the 15.6 kWh battery in about 2 hours 30 minutes. It also works on a 16A charge point and at any untethered Type 2 charge post, so nothing about a future car or a future wall box makes it redundant.

The 2023 A 250 e accepts 11 kW. Does it need a different cable?

No, the same 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable suits both. The 11 kW quoted for the updated Mercedes A 250 e is a three phase rating, and a UK house cannot supply three phases, so the car draws 7.4 kW at home exactly as the 2019 to 2023 version does. The gap only opens at a three phase charge point, where the newer car takes 1 hour 30 minutes to fill against 2 hours 30 minutes for the earlier one.

Is the 22kW three phase cable a waste of money on an A 250 e?

At home, yes. Plugged into a domestic wall box the 22kW cable moves 7.4 kW into a Mercedes A 250 e, the same as the 32A single phase lead, because the extra phases have nothing to connect to. It earns its price only for an owner who parks daily at a genuine three phase supply and runs the post-2023 car, where 11 kW takes an hour off a full charge.

Will a 3-pin cable fill a Mercedes A 250 e overnight?

Yes. A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable gives the Mercedes A 250 e 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket and needs about 7 hours 45 minutes from empty, so the car is full by breakfast. That is the advantage of a 15.6 kWh plug-in hybrid over an electric car. Expect 6 to 8 miles of range for each hour it is plugged in, and plug it into the wall directly rather than through an extension lead.

Does every A-Class take a charging cable, or only the A 250 e?

Only the A 250 e. Every other A-Class runs on petrol or diesel alone, and the lower case e is the whole test: an A 180, A 200, A 220 d, A 250, AMG A 35 or AMG A 45 S has no charging socket anywhere on the car and no cable will connect to it. Check the badge on the boot lid before ordering, because those vehicles are sold alongside the A 250 e in the same shapes and the same trims. Trim names carry no information either, so an AMG Line A 250 e and a Sport A 250 e charge identically.

How far does the cable have to reach on an A 250 e?

From the wall box to the offside rear quarter, because that is where Mercedes put the A 250 e socket, on a car 4.42 metres long in hatchback form and 4.55 metres as a saloon. Reversed in with the unit on the driver's side, 5 metres covers it. Nose in, kerbside, or with the wall box on the far side of the drive, the cable travels the length of the car and 10 metres is the safe order, with 15 and 20 metre leads for a detached garage or shared parking.

Compatibility

Only a badge ending in "e" plugs in. An A 180, A 200, A 220 d, A 250 or AMG A 35 has no charging port. Trim and line make no difference to charging: SE, Sport, AMG Line, Premium and Night Edition all use the same onboard charger.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
