Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Lexus NX 450h+ accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC. This cable hands over every watt of it. Domestic supply is single phase in any case, so no three-phase lead will make the car charge faster.

The Lexus NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, on sale in the UK since 2022 in Premium, Premium Plus, F Sport, F Sport Takumi and Takumi grades, charges through a Type 2 inlet on the rear left wing at up to 6.6 kW AC. A Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable in 32A single phase is the one to buy, because it is the first cable that lets the 6.6 kW onboard charger run flat out. That figure comes from Lexus UK's own launch material, alongside the 18.1 kWh battery and a quoted 2.5 hours from a 32A connection. On most plug-in hybrid vehicles the charger stops at 3.7 kW and the cheapest cable is already full speed. That 6.6 kW charging speed makes the NX 450h+ the exception in its class. The exception is what this page is about.

Lexus NX 450h+ charging cable: why 16 amps costs you time here

Full speed at home: the 32A single phase cable. Sold as 32amp (7.2kW), it can carry 7.4 kW, and the Lexus takes 6.6 kW of that, refilling the 18.1 kWh battery from flat in about 3 hours and adding roughly 16 miles of electric range for every hour plugged in. That is what makes the NX 450h+ a car you can top up twice in a day, once at home and once at a Type 2 post at work, and drive close to 90 miles on electricity without the engine doing much. Works, but no faster: the 32A three phase cable. The 6.6 kW ceiling is inside the car, not in the lead, so a 22 kW three phase cable feeding a 6.6 kW charger leaves two of its cores idle wherever you plug it in. It charges an NX 450h+ in exactly the same 3 hours and costs more. Too slow for this charger: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car to 3.7 kW, stretches a full charge to 5 hours 30 minutes and cuts the gain to about 9 miles an hour. On a four hour off-peak tariff that is the difference between a full battery with time to spare and waking up with 36 miles of range on the dial. Owners of 3.7 kW plug-ins can shrug at the 16A lead. An NX 450h+ owner is paying to use barely half the charger Lexus fitted.

Length depends on which way the car faces. The NX 450h+ has its charging socket on the rear left wing, near the tail light, with the fuel filler on the opposite side, and the car is 4.66 metres long. Reverse onto a drive and that socket ends up at the back corner nearest the house; with the wallbox on the same side the 5 metre lead has plenty in hand. Drive in forwards and the cable has to run from the back corner past the whole car to reach the same wall, which is the 10 metre case. If the charger sits on a garage wall at the far end of a long drive, or you charge at a shared post two spaces away, the 15 metre and 20 metre versions are there for that. Rear-mounted sockets favour reversing in, and most NX owners who charge nightly end up doing exactly that.

Lexus UK says the car comes with a cable for public chargers, and NX 450h+ owners on UK forums report finding two leads in the underfloor tray at delivery, a Type 2 cable and a 3-pin one, both around 5 metres. Treat the second one as the model for our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable: 2.3 kW from a standard 13 amp socket, a Type B RCD in the plug, adjustable current from 6 to 12 amps, IP67 sealing, and a full charge in about 9 hours at roughly 6 miles of range an hour. On an 18.1 kWh battery that is a genuine overnight option at a relative's house or a holiday let, which is more than can be said for the same lead on a 77 kWh electric vehicle. Plug it straight into the wall socket, never through an extension lead, and buy it for the nights the car sleeps somewhere without a professionally installed wallbox rather than for every night.

IEC 62196-2 is the standard our Type 2 to Type 2 cable is made to, CE marked, with IP55 sealing against rain and dust and a working range of -30C to +50C. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin is CE marked, IP67 sealed and rated for -30C to +60C. Coil either lead loosely in the underfloor tray between uses and glance over both plugs for cracks before a charging session. The battery and the 6.6 kW charger have not changed since launch, so the two tables differ only because Lexus revised the official electric range: 43 to 47 miles WLTP in the 2022 launch specification, up to 44 miles on the current Lexus UK page. Lexus states 18.1 kWh without separating usable from total, so every time here is worked on the full figure and will run a touch generous. Heated seats in January and a run up the motorway both pull the miles per hour below these numbers.

Why does a 32A cable matter more on a Lexus NX 450h+ than on other plug-in hybrids?

Because the Lexus NX 450h+ has a 6.6 kW onboard charger where most plug-in hybrids have 3.7 kW. On a 3.7 kW car the 16A cable is already the fastest it can go. On the NX 450h+ the 16A cable caps the car at 3.7 kW and a full charge takes 5 hours 30 minutes, while the 32A single phase cable lets it take the whole 6.6 kW and finish in 3 hours. The extra cost of the 32A lead buys back two and a half hours on every charge.

How many miles does a Lexus NX 450h+ gain per hour on each cable?

About 16 miles an hour on the 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable at 6.6 kW, about 9 miles an hour on the 16A cable at 3.7 kW, and about 6 miles an hour from a 3-pin socket at 2.3 kW, using the current 44 mile WLTP figure and the 18.1 kWh vehicle battery. Real gains vary depending on temperature and how the last trip was driven. Over a four hour off-peak window that is a full battery on 32A, roughly 36 miles on 16A and about 22 miles on the 3-pin.

Is the cable supplied with a new Lexus NX 450h+ enough on its own?

Usually for the first few weeks, then length or a second location catches people out. Lexus UK confirms a cable is supplied for public charging, and UK owners report both a Type 2 lead and a 3-pin lead in the boot, each about 5 metres. A second Type 2 cable earns its keep when the wallbox is on the wrong side of a nose-in drive, when one lead lives at work and one at home, or when a used NX 450h+ turns up with the original cables missing.

Is there any car park where the three phase cable helps a Lexus NX 450h+?

No. The Lexus NX 450h+ accepts 6.6 kW on a single phase and cannot use a second or third phase, so a 22 kW three phase cable gives an NX 450h+ the same 6.6 kW you get from the 32A single phase lead, whether the socket is at home, at work or on a public Type 2 post. The car has no rapid charging socket either, so the Type 2 inlet is the only way in and 6.6 kW is the fastest an NX 450h+ will ever charge.

How much cable does an NX 450h+ need if the wallbox is on the wrong side?

Ten metres. The Lexus NX 450h+ carries its charging socket on the rear left wing of a 4.66 metre car, so if the charger is fitted on the right hand side of the house or you park nose in, the cable has to cover the length of the vehicle before it reaches the wallbox. Five metres is comfortable only when you reverse in with the socket on the charger's side. Fifteen and 20 metres cover a detached garage or a post shared across parking spaces.

I drive a Lexus NX 350h. Will any of these cables fit?

No, because the Lexus NX 350h is a self-charging hybrid with no charging socket, and the same is true of the earlier NX 300h. Only the NX 450h+, with the plus sign on the tailgate and a flap on the rear left wing, plugs in. If your NX has no second flap behind the rear wheel, it charges itself while driving and needs no cable of any kind.

Compatibility

The plus sign is the whole story here. The NX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid with a Type 2 socket on the rear wing. The NX 350h and NX 300h are self-charging hybrids with no charging port at all, and Lexus itself describes them as needing no plugging in. The same rule runs across the Lexus range: RX 450h+ plugs in, RX 450h does not. If your badge has no plus, no cable will help. For the 450h+, the onboard charger is 6.6 kW, which makes a 32A cable worthwhile, and there is no rapid charging.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
