Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Kia Soul EV accepts up to 7.2 kW on AC. A 32A single-phase lead delivers that figure in full, which is why it is the one we recommend. The three-phase cable would be money spent on capacity the car cannot take.

Check which Soul EV you have. The 2020 on car is Type 2 and takes the cable above. The 2014 to 2019 Soul EV is Type 1, and this page carries a Type 1 to Type 2 lead for it.

Two Kia Soul EVs were sold here with different sockets, and both wore 2019 plates, so look at the DC port beside the inlet rather than the registration: a round CHAdeMO port means the first generation car with a Type 1 inlet, a CCS port means the second generation e-Soul with Type 2. The e-Soul pairs a 64 kWh battery with a 7.2 kW single phase charger, which a 7.4 kW UK home supply covers in full, so it fills from empty in about 10 hours. First generation cars carry 27 or 30 kWh and up to 6.6 kW, with 3.3 kW quoted for some early ones.

Pick your Kia Soul EV charging cable

Both generations charge through a flap in the middle of the front grille, so measure to the nose of the car when choosing a length. The 15m and 20m 32A Type 2 cables cover an e-Soul parked at the kerb or a wallbox on the far side of a detached garage. Take whichever lead matches your Soul on trips too, since untethered public posts expect you to bring one. Both chargers are single phase, so there is no three phase lead for this car. The Type 2 to 3 Pin fits the e-Soul but not the older car; it carries its own RCD and a current selector, and a long night on a household socket puts roughly 80 miles back.

Why buy your Kia Soul EV cable from EV Cable Shop

  • Over 600 Trustpilot reviews and an Excellent rating. Read the reviews.
  • Free UK delivery, next working day. Orders in by 2pm leave us the same day.
  • Free exchanges for 30 days. Measured wrong? Return it and we send the length you need.
  • Every cable carries a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, and all are CE marked and built to IEC standards.
  • Matched to your car, not upsold. An e-Soul tops out at 7.2 kW and the first generation car needs a Type 1 plug, so we send whichever of the two your Soul actually takes, and no three phase lead at all.
  • A family business based in the UK.

The full Kia line up is in Kia EV charging cables, and owners moving on from a Soul often look at the Kia Niro charging cable page.

Kia Soul EV Charging Times by Generation

Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 7.2 kW, single phase

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Range Added Per Hour Verdict
Type 2 - 1-Phase, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW 19 hours 30 mins approx. 16 miles Too slow for this battery
Type 2 - 1-Phase, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.2 kW (car limited) 10 hours approx. 32 miles Best Fit at home
Type 2 to 3-Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 31 hours 30 mins approx. 10 miles Ideal backup

Soul EV, first generation, 30 kWh, about 179 miles NEDC

Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 6.6 kW, single phase, through a Type 1 inlet

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Range Added Per Hour Verdict
Type 1 to Type 2, 16A (5m) 3.7 kW 9 hours 15 mins approx. 22 miles The only cable that fits this car

Soul EV, first generation, 27 kWh, about 132 miles NEDC

Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 6.6 kW on later cars, 3.3 kW is quoted for some early ones, through a Type 1 inlet

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Range Added Per Hour Verdict
Type 1 to Type 2, 16A (5m) 3.7 kW 8 hours 15 mins approx. 18 miles The only cable that fits this car

The first generation Soul EV predates WLTP testing, so the ranges above are the older NEDC figures and real world mileage will be lower. Expect lower figures in winter and on long fast runs.

FAQs

Kia Soul EV Charging Cable FAQs

Which cable fits a Kia Soul EV?

It depends which Soul you have. A second generation Kia e-Soul wants the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A first generation Kia Soul EV has a Type 1 inlet and needs the Type 1 to Type 2 cable instead. Nothing else will physically connect.

How do I tell a first generation Soul EV from an e-Soul?

Look at the DC socket in the grille flap. A first generation Kia Soul EV has a round CHAdeMO port next to a Type 1 inlet. The second generation e-Soul has CCS, which looks like a Type 2 inlet with two large pins below it. Both cars appear on 2019 registrations, so the plate is no help at all.

Does a Kia e-Soul need a 22kW three phase cable?

No, and we do not stock one for it. The Kia e-Soul has a 7.2 kW single phase onboard charger, so the extra two phases in a 22 kW lead would have nothing to connect to. The 32A single phase cable already delivers everything the car will accept.

How long does a Kia e-Soul take to charge at home?

About 10 hours from empty on a 32A cable with the 64 kWh battery, or about 19 hours 30 minutes on a 16A one. A 30 kWh first generation Kia Soul EV takes roughly 9 hours 15 minutes on its Type 1 lead, and the 27 kWh car about 8 hours 15 minutes.

What length of cable does a Kia Soul EV need?

5m suits a Kia Soul EV parked nose in, since the charging flap sits in the middle of the grille and the car is only 4.2 metres long. Choose 10m if the wallbox is behind where the car stops, if a second vehicle shares the drive, or if you charge at the kerb.

Can I take my own cable to a public charge point?

Yes, and on a Kia Soul EV you usually have to. Most AC posts in the UK are untethered, so the socket is bare and the driver supplies the lead. First generation Soul EV owners need the Type 1 to Type 2 cable for those bays, because the post end of every public AC socket is Type 2.

Sizing guide
  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp – 10amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
