Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Kia Niro accepts up to 11 kW on AC. Nothing in the range can outrun a 22 kW lead, and a three-phase charge point is where the extra capacity turns into hours saved.

Home charging only? One phase is all a British house has, which means 7.4 kW on a wallbox. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) covers that and saves you the difference.

One badge, four onboard chargers: the right Kia Niro charging cable depends on which Niro you own, because the 2022 onwards Niro EV accepts 11 kW AC, the 2019 to 2022 e-Niro accepts 7.2 kW, and both generations of Niro Plug-in Hybrid accept 3.3 kW. Every one of them charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and none of them can pull more than 7.4 kW from a British home wallbox. Kia UK quotes 64.8 kWh and an 11 kW onboard charger for the Niro EV; EV Database lists 7.2 kW for the e-Niro, with an 11 kW three phase charger offered on some later cars. The plug-in hybrid gives itself away on Kia's own UK specification page, where the charging table prints the same 2 hours 55 minutes under the 7.2 kW column and the 11 kW three phase column, because the car's own ceiling sits well below either figure. Start by identifying the car, not the year: the self-charging Niro Hybrid has no charging socket in either generation and takes no cable at all.

Which Kia Niro charging cable is right for your car

Electric Niro, at home: the 32A single phase cable. The menu calls it 32amp (7.2kW); it carries 7.4 kW, which is the single phase ceiling in most UK homes and the most either electric Niro will draw from one, so nothing dearer charges these cars faster on a driveway. A 64.8 kWh Niro EV fills in 10 hours and a 64 kWh e-Niro in the same 10 hours at its 7.2 kW limit, so one cable settles both generations. Plug-in hybrid Niro: the 16A cable is already full speed. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it offers 3.7 kW and the car takes 3.3 kW of it, filling the 11.1 kWh battery in 3 hours 45 minutes. The 32A cable finishes at the same minute and the money is better kept, unless an electric car is joining the household later. Worth buying only for a three phase supply: the 32A three phase cable. The menu lists it as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). A cable cannot invent phases that the meter does not have, so on a driveway it hands over the same 7.4 kW as the cheaper lead. At a workplace charging point or a 22 kW public post with three live phases, a Niro EV takes its full 11 kW and drops from 10 hours to 6 hours 45 minutes. An e-Niro or a Niro PHEV gains nothing there. The one to avoid on an electric Niro: the 16A cable. It holds a Niro EV to 3.7 kW, stretching a full charge to 19 hours 45 minutes and cutting a seven hour off-peak window from about 231 miles to about 112.

Length is the one decision the electric Niro makes easy. Its inlet sits in the nose, behind a flap in the centre of the grille, confirmed by EV Database and by Zapmap, so a Niro EV or e-Niro driven in nose first, with the wallbox on the front wall or at the garage end, puts the socket a stride from the unit and 5m covers it. Reverse onto the drive, or charge at the kerb, and the lead has to run the whole 4.42 metre length of the vehicle and back to the flap, which is where 10m earns its keep. The plug-in hybrid parks differently: its flap is located on a front wing rather than in the grille, so check which side yours is on before you measure. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable comes in 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m; our 15m and 20m lengths are 32A single phase and suit a detached garage, an allocated bay in shared parking, or a charger fitted at the house wall of a long drive.

Check the boot before you assume a spare lead is in it. Kia lists a mode 3 Type 2 cable among Niro accessories rather than promising one with every car, and a used e-Niro or Niro PHEV changes hands often enough with an empty boot. It has a Type B RCD in its control box and a current setting you can wind down on an older circuit. On a Niro PHEV it is close to a real answer, filling the 11.1 kWh battery in 5 hours 30 minutes against 3 hours 45 minutes on the 16A lead. On a Niro EV it adds about 10 miles an hour and belongs in the boot for a night at a relative's house.

Kia electric models do not share one onboard charger figure, so the numbers on the Kia EV3 charging cable page are not these ones, and the whole range sits under Kia charging cables. Both leads here carry a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, free next working day UK delivery, and 30 days to send one back free if the length is wrong. On sealing and standards, the Type 2 to Type 2 lead is IP55 rated against weather, works from -30C to +50C, and meets IEC 62196-2 with CE marking. The Type 2 to 3-Pin lead is sealed further to IP67, works from -30C to +60C, and meets IEC 62752 with CE marking.

The 39 kWh e-Niro shares the 7.2 kW charger and fills in 6 hours 15 minutes on the 32A cable, and the 2017 to 2022 Niro PHEV, 8.9 kWh and 30 miles of electric range, takes 3 hours on the 16A. Kia publishes the plug-in hybrid battery figures as gross capacity, so those two times run slightly long. Cold mornings and a spell at 70 mph will each take a bite out of the miles per hour column.

How do I tell which Kia Niro I have before ordering a cable?

Look at the badge and the charging flap. A Kia Niro EV or e-Niro carries an EV badge and has its flap in the centre of the grille; a Niro Plug-in Hybrid has a flap on a front wing and a petrol filler as well; a self-charging Niro Hybrid has only the petrol filler. The registration year then separates the two electric cars: e-Niro to 2022 at 7.2 kW, Niro EV from 2022 at 11 kW.

What type of charging port does a Kia Niro have?

Every Kia Niro that plugs in uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging, built to IEC 62196-2, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the Niro EV, the e-Niro and the Niro Plug-in Hybrid alike. The connector has never changed across the two generations, which is why the amperage and the length are the only real choices to make. The DC fast charging section below it is part of the same CCS inlet and uses the tethered cable at the charge point, not one from your boot.

Is the 16A cable enough for a Kia Niro PHEV?

Yes, and it is the sensible buy. A Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid accepts 3.3 kW, under the 3.7 kW the 16A cable can pass, so the battery is full in 3 hours 45 minutes and a dearer 32A lead cannot shorten that by a minute. Kia's UK charge time for the car is the same whether it is plugged into a 7.2 kW unit or an 11 kW three phase one.

Does the three-phase cable earn its money on a Kia Niro EV?

Only away from home. A 2022 onwards Kia Niro EV charges at 11 kW where three phases actually arrive, usually a workplace car park or a 22 kW public AC post, and a full charge falls from 10 hours to 6 hours 45 minutes. At a house the same cable delivers 7.4 kW, exactly what the 32A single phase lead delivers for less money. On a Niro PHEV it never helps anywhere, and on an e-Niro only if yours is one of the later cars built with the optional three phase charger.

Does the Kia Niro EV come with a charging cable?

Treat it as unconfirmed until you have looked. Kia sells a mode 3 Type 2 lead and a household 3-pin lead as Niro accessories rather than guaranteeing either with the car, and a used Niro EV or e-Niro often arrives with nothing in the boot or with a cable of the wrong length. Ask the seller, or check the underfloor storage, before the wallbox goes on the wall.

What does one cheap-rate night put back into a Kia Niro EV?

About 231 miles on a Kia Niro EV, using a seven hour off-peak window at 7.4 kW and around 33 miles of range an hour. That is most of the 285 mile WLTP battery in a single night, and it is why the 16A cable costs real money on this car: the same window on 3.7 kW returns roughly 112 miles, so the rest is bought at the daytime rate.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

    A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
