Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The KIA EV3 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The 22 kW cable matches the highest rate the model reaches, and a three-phase supply is where that rate is actually reachable.

If it only ever charges at home, buy down. A house supply is single phase, so the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) hands over every watt of it.

Every Kia EV3 sold in the UK charges through a Type 2 inlet at up to 11 kW AC, whichever battery is under the floor, so one Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable is the right Kia EV3 charging cable for the 58.3 kWh Air Standard Range and for the 81.4 kWh Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S alike. On a UK home wallbox the car draws 7.4 kW. Kia's UK specification page quotes 5 hours 20 minutes and 7 hours 15 minutes for the two batteries on an 11 kW three phase charger, and EV Database lists the same 11 kW onboard charger for both. AC charging speed is set by that shared onboard charger, not by the battery. The 55 kWh usable Standard Range and the 78 kWh usable Long Range accept power at the same rate and put back the same 36 miles or so per hour at 7.4 kW. The battery you order changes nothing about which cable to buy, only what one night on the cheap tariff achieves: a seven hour off-peak window restores about 250 miles on either car, nearly a whole Standard Range battery and around two thirds of a Long Range one.

Kia EV3 charging cable: three cables, one decision

The one to buy for a home EV charger: the 32A single phase cable. The menu calls it 32amp (7.2kW); it carries 7.4 kW, the single phase ceiling of most UK homes and the most a Kia EV3 will take from one, so nothing dearer is faster on a driveway. It fills a Standard Range from empty in 8 hours 30 minutes and a Long Range in 12 hours. Only if you charge somewhere with three phases: the 32A three phase cable. A domestic wallbox has a single live to offer, so two of the three power cores in this cable never carry current at home and the car still sees 7.4 kW. At a workplace charging point with a genuine three phase supply the EV3 pulls its full 11 kW and a Long Range finishes in 8 hours rather than 12, the one situation that justifies the extra cost. Cheaper, and it costs you the night rate: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car to 3.7 kW, so a Long Range needs 23 hours 45 minutes and a Standard Range 16 hours 45 minutes from empty, and the seven hour cheap window shrinks to about 125 miles. The shortfall is made up at the day rate.

The charge flap on a Kia EV3 sits on the right front wing, ahead of the driver's door on a UK car, and the vehicle is 4.3 metres long (4.31 metres on GT-Line and GT-Line S). Our Type 2 to Type 2 cable comes in 5, 10, 15 and 20 metre lengths. That front position rewards driving in nose first: with the wallbox on the driver's side or the front wall, the 5 metre cable reaches with plenty in hand. Reverse in and the flap ends up furthest from the charger, so the lead runs the length of the car and 10 metres is the sensible order. Kerbside is the awkward case: a right hand flap faces the road on a UK street, so the cable goes round the nose to a lamp post charger, again 10 metres. 15 and 20 metres are for a detached garage, a shared car park or a wallbox at the far end of a long drive.

Do not assume a 3-pin lead is in the car. Nothing on Kia's UK EV3 specification page confirms a cable of either kind as standard, and owners of other UK Kia electric models report both a Type 2 lead in the box and no lead at all, so check under the bonnet first. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, the 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option in the menu, plugs into any 13 amp home socket and gives the car 2.3 kW, about 11 miles of range an hour and the slowest way to charge an electric vehicle, with a Type B RCD in the control box and a current setting you can turn down on an older circuit. From empty it would take 27 hours on a Standard Range and 38 hours 15 minutes on a Long Range, so it is not a stand in for a home charger. It is the cable for a relative's house, a holiday cottage, and the fortnight before the wallbox goes on the wall.

Kia does not fit one onboard charger across its electric cars, so the figures on the Kia EV6 charging cable page differ from these, and every lead we make for the brand is listed under Kia charging cables. On weather protection, the Type 2 to Type 2 cable is IP55 rated and the Type 2 to 3-Pin is IP67 rated, so both can live outside. The Type 2 to Type 2 is built to IEC 62196-2, CE marked, with a working temperature range of -30C to +50C; the Type 2 to 3-Pin is built to IEC 62752, CE marked, and works from -30C to +60C. GT-Line and GT-Line S ride on 19 inch wheels and are rated at 367 and 362 miles WLTP, so their range per hour lands a mile or two under the Air figures above. Kia publishes only the 58.3 and 81.4 kWh nominal capacities, so the usable figures are EV Database estimates. On a January morning, or after an hour at 70 mph, the real miles per hour comes in below these numbers.

Which charging cable should a Kia EV3 owner buy?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable, for either battery. A Kia EV3 accepts 7.4 kW from a single phase wallbox and this cable carries exactly that, taking the Standard Range from empty to full in 8 hours 30 minutes and the Long Range in 12 hours. The three phase cable adds no speed at a house, and the 16A cable roughly doubles both times. The same cable is compatible with any untethered public charging point in the UK and Europe; rapid chargers carry their own tethered lead.

Can a Kia EV3 Long Range recharge fully in one cheap-rate window?

Not from empty. A 78 kWh Kia EV3 Long Range needs 12 hours at 7.4 kW, so an overnight charge in a seven hour off-peak window restores about 250 miles, roughly two thirds of the battery. That is far more than most electric car owners use in a day, so the car is full most mornings; only after a long trip does it need a second night or a spell on the day rate. The 55 kWh Standard Range, at 8 hours 30 minutes from empty, gets much closer to a full charge in the same window.

Does the Kia EV3 Standard Range charge faster than the Long Range?

No. Both Kia EV3 batteries use the same 11 kW onboard charger and both draw 7.4 kW from a home wallbox, so their charging speed is identical, about 36 miles of range an hour. The charging time differs only because there is less to fill, 55 kWh against 78 kWh.

Do I need the 22kW three-phase cable for a Kia EV3?

Only if you regularly plug in at a three phase supply, which in Britain usually means a workplace charger or a 22 kW public charging post. There the Kia EV3 charges at its 11 kW ceiling and a Long Range fills in 8 hours instead of 12. At home the same cable delivers 7.4 kW, no more than the 32A single phase cable, because a domestic wallbox can only feed one phase.

Is a Type 2 cable included with a new Kia EV3 in the UK?

Kia's UK EV3 specification page does not list a charging cable as standard equipment, so treat it as unconfirmed until you have opened the storage box under the bonnet. On Kia's other UK electric models, owners have reported both outcomes, a Type 2 to Type 2 lead in the box and no lead at all, and a used Kia EV3 can arrive with neither, so ask the seller before collection.

Does a Kia EV3 need a 5 metre or a 10 metre cable?

5 metres if the Kia EV3 goes nose first onto a drive with the wallbox on the driver's side or the front wall, because the flap is on the right front wing of a 4.3 metre car and sits close to the unit. 10 metres if you reverse in, park on the street, or the wallbox is round a corner from the flap. Measure the route the cable will actually take, round the bumper if it has to, before choosing.

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
