Product Description

The Jaecoo 8 SHS-P is an odd and interesting thing to buy a cable for. It carries a 34.5 kWh battery, which is bigger than the entire battery of some small electric cars, and it delivers 83 miles of electric range, enough that plenty of owners will rarely trouble the petrol engine. But the onboard charger is a plug-in hybrid's charger: 6.6 kW. An EV-sized battery on a modest charger means this is the slowest-filling plug-in hybrid Jaecoo sells, and the cable you pick matters more than on the 7.

The right cable is our 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2. A 32A cable carries 7.4 kW so the car takes its full 6.6 kW, filling from empty in about six hours and adding roughly 16 electric miles per hour.

A 16A cable is a false economy on this car specifically. Capped at 3.7 kW you are looking at ten and a half hours for a full charge and only nine electric miles per hour. On the smaller Jaecoo 7 that trade-off is arguable. On a 34.5 kWh battery it is not: you would struggle to fill the car inside an off-peak window and the whole benefit of the large battery would go unused most nights.

A three-phase cable does nothing here. The ceiling is 6.6 kW, far below the point where three phases become relevant, so the 3-Phase 32A cable is capability you cannot access.

One honest observation about efficiency. The 8 is a seven-seat all-wheel-drive SUV with 428PS, and it returns around 2.4 miles per kWh, the lowest figure of any chargeable Jaecoo. That is why 34.5 kWh yields 83 miles rather than the 140 or so the same battery would give a small hatchback. It does not change your cable, but it does explain why charge times look long relative to the range you get back.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin cable takes about seventeen hours from empty here, which is beyond a single night. On the 7 SHS-P we would call a 3-pin cable a viable primary method. On the 8 it is better thought of as a boot spare for visits and holidays, with a proper wallbox doing the daily work.

The 8 is a large vehicle at over 4.8 metres. 5m is rarely enough unless the charge point is immediately beside the flap, and most owners are better served by 10m, or 15m and 20m for detached garages and awkward driveways.

Elsewhere in the range: the smaller Jaecoo 7 SHS-P, and the fully electric Jaecoo E5, which is the only Jaecoo that can use more than 6.6 kW. Everything in the Jaecoo cable range.

Times use the 34.46 kWh gross figure, as Jaecoo does not publish a usable capacity. Electric range per hour is derived from the 83 mile WLTP EV figure.

Jaecoo 8 Charging Cable FAQs

Why does the Jaecoo 8 take almost twice as long to charge as the Jaecoo 7?

Because it has almost twice the battery on the same charger. Both cars accept 6.6 kW, but the 8 holds 34.5 kWh against the 7's 18.3 kWh. Same rate of flow, nearly double the volume, so about six hours instead of three and a quarter.

With 83 electric miles, will I ever need the petrol engine?

For daily driving, quite possibly not, which is unusual for a plug-in hybrid. That only holds if you charge it, though. Six hours on a 32A cable means an overnight charge is comfortable, whereas a 16A cable at ten and a half hours will often leave you setting off part-charged.

Is 6.6 kW a limitation on a battery this size?

It is the honest weak point of the car. A 34.5 kWh battery would normally sit behind an 11 kW charger, which would fill it in about three and a half hours. At 6.6 kW you are tied to a six hour charge whatever cable you buy. Nothing you purchase can raise that ceiling, so the aim is simply to reach it, which the 32A cable does and the 16A does not.

Does the six-seat Executive charge differently from the seven-seat Luxury?

No. Same 34.46 kWh battery, same 6.6 kW charger, same Type 2 inlet. Seating layout has no bearing on charging.

Is a wallbox worth installing for a Jaecoo 8?

Yes, more clearly than for most plug-in hybrids. The gap between a wallbox at 6.6 kW and a domestic socket at 2.3 kW is six hours against seventeen on this battery. If you intend to use the 83 mile electric range routinely, a proper charge point is close to essential.

Can I share one cable between a Jaecoo 8 and a Jaecoo 7?

Yes, with no compromise. Both are Type 2 and both cap at 6.6 kW, so a single 32A cable serves both at full speed. Buy for the longer car: a length that reaches on the 8 will certainly reach on the 7.

Both seating layouts are mechanically identical for charging. The 32A cable carries 7.4 kW so the car takes its full 6.6 kW, filling in about six hours.   • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
