Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Hyundai Tucson accepts up to 7.2 kW on AC. This cable hands over every watt of it. Domestic supply is single phase in any case, so no three-phase lead will make the car charge faster.

The Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, sold in the UK since March 2021 and facelifted in 2024, charges through a Type 2 inlet at up to 7.2 kW AC from a 13.8 kWh battery, and the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable is the one that reaches that figure. The 7.2 kW is what separates this vehicle from most plug-in hybrid models. A typical PHEV carries a 3.6 or 3.7 kW onboard charger and the cheapest cable is all it can use; the Tucson takes almost twice that, so the amperage you pick changes how long you wait. Read the tailgate badge before ordering, because Hyundai sells several Tucson models and only one of them plugs in. The Tucson Hybrid, the 48V mild hybrid and the plain petrol have no socket, and only the car badged Plug-in Hybrid takes a cable.

Choosing a Hyundai Tucson charging cable

Full speed at home: the 32A single phase cable. Hyundai's UK specification sheet lists the Tucson's onboard charger at 7.2 kW, single phase. A British house supply is single phase as well, and a 32A wallbox can push 7.4 kW through it, so this cable, listed in our menu as 32amp (7.2kW), lets the car draw its whole 7.2 kW and refill from empty in about 2 hours 15 minutes by our maths, or 1 hour 42 minutes by Hyundai's own quote. Works, but no faster: the 32A three phase cable. The Tucson's charger is a single phase unit, so two of the three power cores in that cable connect to nothing inside the vehicle, at home, at work or at a public post. It charges the Tucson at exactly 7.2 kW and the higher price buys nothing. It is safe, because the vehicle only ever draws what its own charger asks for, but there is no case for paying for it. Costs you time: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), its lower price holds the vehicle to 3.7 kW, half what the Tucson will accept, and the same empty to full stretches to about 4 hours 15 minutes. Overnight that is irrelevant. It matters on the day you use the whole 40 odd miles of electric range in the morning, plug in at lunchtime and want the battery back for the afternoon: the 32A cable has it full in two hours, the 16A hands you back half a battery.

Length turns on where the socket sits. Owners place the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid's charging flap on the right hand rear quarter, behind the rear wheel on the driver's side, on a car 4.5 metres long (4.51 to 4.52 metres from 2024). Hyundai does not print the flap position in its UK brochure, so it is a good idea to confirm it on your own vehicle before you pace anything out. Reverse onto a drive with the wallbox on the driver's side and the flap finishes beside the unit, so the 5 metre cable is plenty. Park nose first and the lead has to pass a rear door, a front door and the bonnet before it reaches the wallbox, and that is the 10 metre cable's job. The longer 15 and 20 metre leads suit a wallbox on a garage wall while the car lives on the drive, or a parking space well away from the meter cupboard. Pace from the wallbox to the flap with the car parked as you actually park it, and buy the length above that.

Do not assume a 3-pin lead is in the boot. Hyundai UK says only that several types of cable are available for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, one for public AC points and an ICCB lead for a household socket. The UK owner community on the Tucson forums reports that cars built before August 2022 arrived with both, and that later builds came with the Type 2 cable alone. On a 2023 or newer vehicle, or a used one, expect it to be missing. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable fills that gap: 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket, adding about 7 miles of range an hour, IP67 sealed, with a Type B RCD in the control box and a current setting you can turn down for an older ring main. Plug it straight into the wall: Hyundai's owner's manual warns against running a 3-pin charging lead through an extension cable, and so do we. On a 13.8 kWh battery it reaches full in about 6 hours 45 minutes, so a night on a relative's drive or outside a holiday cottage puts a full electric range back without a wallbox in sight.

The Tucson uses the same 7.2 kW single phase charger as the 2018 to 2023 Kona Electric, which has its own page at Hyundai Kona charging cable, and every Hyundai lead we sell is listed under Hyundai EV charging cables. Both cables on this page carry a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and come with free next working day UK delivery and 30 days to send back one that turns out to be the wrong length. The Type 2 to Type 2 lead is made to IEC 62196-2, is CE marked, carries an IP55 rating so it can live outside, and is rated for use between -30C and +50C. The Type 2 to 3-Pin lead is made to IEC 62752, is CE marked, carries an IP67 rating and works from -30C to +60C.

Hyundai publishes the Tucson battery as 13.8 kWh and gives no usable figure, so the times above run from the gross number and sit a little on the long side; Hyundai's own quote is 1 hour 42 minutes to full on a 7 kW wallbox. The range column uses the WLTP electric range, which Hyundai UK quotes at up to 38 miles for the 2021 to 2024 car and 42 to 43 miles for the 2024 facelift depending on trim and drivetrain. Heating, a cold battery and a dual carriageway cruise all pull the miles per hour figure down, and road test experience puts the real world figure nearer 30 miles.

Which Hyundai Tucson models can be charged with a cable?

Only the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, sold in the UK from March 2021; the other Tucson models cannot. The Tucson Hybrid, the 1.6 T-GDi 48V mild hybrid and the petrol Tucson have no charging socket and charge their own small batteries from the engine and from braking, so no cable of any type will connect to them. On the Plug-in Hybrid the trim makes no difference: Advance, Premium, N Line, Element, Black Line, N Line Edition, N Line S and Ultimate all carry the same 13.8 kWh battery and the same 7.2 kW charger.

What is the best Type 2 charging cable for a Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid accepts 7.2 kW on AC, a 32A home wallbox on a single phase supply delivers up to 7.4 kW, and this cable carries all the car can take. The 16A cable works but holds the Tucson to 3.7 kW, doubling every charge from about 2 hours 15 minutes to about 4 hours 15 minutes.

Would a 22kW three phase cable charge a Tucson Plug-in Hybrid any quicker?

No, not anywhere. The Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has a single phase onboard charger rated at 7.2 kW, so a three phase cable connects two of its power cores to nothing and the car charges at the same 7.2 kW it reaches on the cheaper 32A single phase lead. That holds at home, at a workplace with a three phase supply and at a 22 kW public post.

How quickly does a Tucson Plug-in Hybrid recharge on a home wallbox?

About 2 hours 15 minutes from empty on a 32A cable at 7.2 kW, working from the 13.8 kWh gross battery with charging losses included; Hyundai's own figure is 1 hour 42 minutes on a 7 kW wallbox. On a 16A cable at 3.7 kW allow about 4 hours 15 minutes, and on a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable at 2.3 kW from a household socket about 6 hours 45 minutes, against Hyundai's 6 hours 30 minutes to 95%.

Did the 2024 Tucson facelift change how the car charges?

No. The facelifted Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid keeps the 13.8 kWh battery and the 7.2 kW single phase onboard charger of the 2021 car, so the same 32A single phase cable is the right buy for both. What changed was the drivetrain and the range: Hyundai added a two wheel drive version and quotes up to 43 miles of electric range on it, against up to 38 miles for the four wheel drive only 2021 to 2024 car.

Does a Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid come with a 3-pin charging cable?

Not reliably. Hyundai UK states that several cables are available for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, a Type 2 lead for public AC points and an ICCB lead for a household socket, without promising either in the box. UK owners report that cars built before August 2022 came with both and that later builds came with the Type 2 cable only, so a 2023 or newer Tucson, or a used one of any year, usually needs a Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable bought separately if a 13 amp socket is ever going to charge it.

Compatibility

Only the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid plugs in. Hyundai sells the Tucson as petrol, 48V mild hybrid, self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Three of those four have no charging port. If your Tucson is not badged Plug-in Hybrid, no cable will fit it.

Trim level makes no difference to charging: Element, Black Line, N Line Edition, Ultimate and N Line S all use the same onboard charger.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
